US Senate passes sweeping immigration bill

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Senate passed sweeping legislation Thursday offering the hope of citizenship to millions of immigrants living illegally in the shadows, while promising a military-style effort to secure the long-porous border with Mexico. The issue sits atop President Barack Obama's second-term agenda, but the bill's prospects are highly uncertain in the Republican-controlled House, where many conservatives prefer more border security to any pathway to citizenship. The bill would amount to the most dramatic changes in decades to U.S. immigration laws. Some onlookers erupted in chants of Yes, we can after the vote result was announced. The developments marked an end to years of partisan gridlock on immigration. The shift started quickly after last year's presidential election, when many Republican leaders concluded the party must show a more welcoming face to Hispanic voters who had given Obama more than 70 percent of their support. Now is the time when opponents will try their hardest to pull this bipartisan effort apart so they can stop commonsense reform from becoming a reality. We cannot let that happen, Obama said in a statement shortly after the vote.A small bipartisan group of senators had worked out the current bill a rare show of cooperation in the bitterly divided Congress.Do the right thing for America and for your party, said Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat who said his mother emigrated to the United States from Cuba. Find common ground. Lean away from the extremes. Opt for reason and govern with us.Republican Sen. Jeff Flake recalled the time he spent as a youth working alongside family members and undocumented migrant labor, largely from Mexico, who worked harder than we did under conditions much more difficult than we endured.Division among Republicans was evident as potential 2016 presidential contenders split. Sen. Marco Rubio was one of the bill's drafters, while senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz were opposed to it.The legislation's chief provisions include numerous steps to prevent future illegal immigration and to check the legal status of job applicants already living in the United States. At the same time, it offers a 13-year path to citizenship to as many as 11 million immigrants now living in the country illegally. The measure also requires 20,000 new Border Patrol agents, the completion of 700 miles (1,226 kilometers) of fencing and the deployment of an array of high-tech devices along the U.S.-Mexico border.Other provisions would expand the number of visas available for highly skilled workers relied upon by the technology industry. A separate program would be established for lower-skilled workers, and farm workers would be admitted under a temporary program. In addition, the system of legal immigration that has been in effect for decades would be changed, making family ties less of a factor and elevating the importance of education, job skills and relative youth. The Republican leader of the House, Speaker John Boehner, said at a news conference the separate legislation his chamber considers will have majority support among Republicans.Boehner declined to say if there were circumstances under which he could support a pathway to citizenship, but he made clear that securing the border was a priority.

75-year-old arrested over bomb at UK mosque

LONDON (AP) - British police have arrested a 75-year-old man on suspicion of causing an explosion after a homemade bomb went off near a mosque.West Midlands Police said the man was arrested by counterterrorism officers Thursday at his home in Walsall, near the central England city of Birmingham.About 150 people were evacuated from homes near the Aisha Mosque and Islamic Center in Walsall after remains of the device were found in an alleyway on Saturday.Police said residents reported hearing a bang late Friday, but there were no reports of injuries and minimal damage.Several mosques and Islamic centers in Britain have been vandalized since a British soldier was killed in London in May, allegedly by Islamic extremists.

Russia says Saudi arming Syria 'terrosists'

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russia accused Saudi Arabia and some other Gulf states on Thursday of funding international terrorists and extremists in the Syria conflict.Moscow's angry statement came in response to accusations by Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, that Russia was responsible for mass killings in Syria because of its military support for the regime.Of course, we are not going to justify ourselves before anyone. Our fundamental position on Syria is well known, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement. At the same time, a number of capitals, including Riyadh, unfortunately are not ashamed of employing all sorts of methods and contacts, including by financing and arming international terrorists and extremists, the ministry statement said.Such actions must really be stopped.Syrian President Bashar al-Assad refers to the armed opposition as terrorists, a position supported on occasion by Moscow.Russia supplies its strategic Middle East ally with weapons under contracts signed before the conflict broke out in March 2011.It has also blocked a series of UN Security Council resolutions condemning Assad for the violence, which a British-based monitor said has now claimed more than 100,000 lives.

Kerry plunges back into Mideast peace diplomacy

Posted:

AMMAN (AP) - Secretary of State John Kerry plunged back into the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Thursday, using Jordan as a base for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. It is Kerry's fifth visit to the region to try to restart peace talks that broke down in 2008.He left Amman Thursday evening in a convoy of nearly a dozen vehicles for the roughly 90-minute drive to Jerusalem to dine with Netanyahu. A Jordanian military helicopter flew over his convoy during the trip. He is to have lunch with Abbas on Friday in Amman and more meetings could be in the offing.U.S. State department officials say that while there are no scheduled plans for any three-way discussion during Kerry's trip, they are confident that both sides are open to negotiations, or at least sitting down together at the same table.Kerry, they say, will continue to try to find common ground between the two sides that would lead to a re-launching of peace talks. On this trip, Kerry is trying to pin down precisely what conditions Abbas and Netanyahu have for restarting talks and perhaps discuss confidence-building measures.Beyond that, Kerry wants to talk about the positive outcomes, such as enhanced economic growth, of a two-state solution. But at the same time, the secretary, who has long-time relationships with officials from both sides, will remind them of what's at stake if the conflict is left unresolved, they said.Earlier this month, in a speech to the American Jewish Committee Global Forum in Washington, Kerry warned of serious consequences if no deal is reached.Think about what could happen next door, he told the Jewish audience. The Palestinian Authority has committed itself to a policy of nonviolence. ... Up until recently, not one Israeli died from anything that happened from the West Bank until there was a settler killed about a month ago.But if that experiment is allowed to fail, ask yourselves: What will replace it? What will happen if the Palestinian economy implodes, if the Palestinian Security Forces dissolve, if the Palestinian Authority fails? ... The failure of the moderate Palestinian leadership could very well invite the rise of the very thing that we want to avoid: the same extremism in the West Bank that we have seen in Gaza or from southern Lebanon. So far, there have been no public signals that the two sides are narrowing their differences.Abbas has said he won't negotiate unless Israel stops building settlements on war-won lands or accepts its 1967 lines before the capture of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem in a Mideast war that year as a starting point for border talks. The Palestinians claim all three areas for their future state.Netanyahu has rejected the Palestinian demands, saying there should be no pre-conditions though his predecessor conducted talks on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, and the international community views the settlements as illegal or illegitimate.

Williams, Djokovic restore order to Wimbledon

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams restored a semblance of order to this wildest of Wimbledons.A day after Roger Federer led a mass exodus of high-seeded players and favorites, the top-ranked man and woman sailed into the third round with straight-sets victories.Djokovic defeated American qualifier Bobby Reynolds 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-1 under the retractable roof on Centre Court, a few hours after Williams beat French 19-year-old Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2.In fact, after Wednesday's series of shock upsets, there wasn't a surprise to be had at the All England Club. The highest-seeded player to lose was No. 17 Milos Raonic of Canada, and there were just two injury retirements compared to seven on Wednesday.Instead, there was the familiar sight of covers being pulled over the courts as the rain arrived for the first time this week, forcing the closure of the roof and the suspension of a number of afternoon matches until Friday.Having seen both Federer and Rafael Nadal knocked out in the first three days, Djokovic also faced surprisingly stiff resistance from Reynolds in the first set. However, he dominated the tiebreaker and had little trouble from there, breaking Reynolds twice in the second and third sets.In the process, Djokovic made this the worst Wimbledon for American men in more than a century.Reynolds' loss means none of the 11 in the tournament advanced past the second round, the first time that's happened since 1912. There were no American men in the tournament that year, although none reached the third round in 1911 either.Williams is still the favorite in the women's draw, however, and will now go from playing an opponent 12 years her junior to facing one 11 years her senior.Next up for the 31-year-old American is Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm, who at 42 became the oldest woman to reach the third round at Wimbledon in the Open era.Date-Krumm beat Alexandra Cadantu of Romania 6-4, 7-5 to advance this far at Wimbledon for the first time since 1996, when she went to the semifinals.I have so much respect for her, said Williams, who herself became the third-oldest woman in the Open era to win a Grand Slam tournament when she captured this year's French Open. I think she's so inspiring to be playing such high level tennis at her age. And she's a real danger on the grass court, I know that. I definitely will have to be ready.Date-Krumm is the second-oldest woman to have won a match at Wimbledon after Martina Navratilova, who was 47 when she reached the second round in 2004. She took a 12-year break from tennis before returning in 2008.I don't know how she's able to do so well, said Williams, adding she doesn't expect to be around for another 10 years. I didn't see myself playing at 31. I definitely do not see myself playing at 42.Age certainly doesn't seem to be slowing her down.Williams broke twice in each set to extend her career-best winning streak to 33 matches as she aims for a sixth Wimbledon title. Her two main rivals, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, were among those eliminated on Wednesday.Last year's runner-up, Agnieszka Radwanska, also breezed into the next round with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mathilde Johansson of France which had to be completed under the roof.In the men's draw, seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych and No. 8 Juan-Martin Del Potro advanced in straight sets. Berdych, the 2010 runner-up, beat Daniel Brands of Germany 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-2. Del Potro rallied from a break down in the second set to oust Jesse Levine of Canada 6-3, 7-6 (7), 6-3.Fourth-seeded David Ferrer was among those who will wait until Friday to play, as his match against fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut was postponed. A back-and-forth five-setter between No. 29 Grigor Dimitrov and Grega Zemlja was suspended overnight, with Zemlja up 9-8 in the fifth.No. 6 Li Na of China looked in trouble for a while before overcoming a poor second set to beat Simona Halep of Romania 6-2, 1-6, 6-0. Other seeded players to win included No. 11 Roberta Vinci and No. 14 Samantha Stosur. Bernard Tomic of Australia advanced by defeating American James Blake 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Tomic's father and coach, John Tomic, is barred from tournaments after allegedly assaulting his son's hitting partner. The two injury retirements were Michael Llodra, who quit with a hamstring problem after losing the first set 7-5 against 23rd-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy, and Paul-Henri Mathieu, who retired while trailing 6-3, 5-1 against Feliciano Lopez of Spain. The nine retirements or walkovers of the second round in singles play broke the record for a round at Wimbledon in the Open era. The International Tennis Federation said eight players quit in the first round in 2008.It equaled the record for a Grand Slam tournament, as nine players withdrew or retired from the first round at the 2011 U.S. Open.

Spain beat Italy 7-6 on penalties to reach final

Posted:

FORTALEZA (AP) - Jesus Navas scored the decisive penalty as World Cup holder Spain beat Italy 7-6 in a shootout Thursday after extra time ended 0-0, setting up a showdown with host Brazil in the Confederations Cup final.Nobody missed in the shootout until Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci shot high to give Navas an attempt at the winner and the Seville midfielder cooly beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to send Spain to another major final. In draining heat and humidity, each side hit the woodwork in extra time. Emanuele Giaccherini smashed a shot off the post in the 93rd minute and Buffon deflected a shot from Xavi Hernandez off the post in the 115th.Italy will face Uruguay in the third-place match in Salvador, also Sunday. In a rematch of the Euro 2012 final, which Spain won 4-0, Italy threatened early on even without the injured Mario Balotelli, relying on counterattacks, while Spain relied on its usual game of short passes and ball possession. The roles reversed in the second half but it wasn't until extra time that each side produced some of the match's best chances. When English referee Howard Webb whistled the end of extra time in the 120th minute, the crowd inside the Castelao Stadium cheered loudly, applauding two classy teams. Before kickoff, about 5,000 anti-government protesters battled police about 2 kilometers (1 mile) from the stadium.More protests are expected Sunday at the final of the World Cup warm-up tournament at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.Thursdays' were the latest in a series of massive, nationwide protests that have hit Brazil since June 17. Demonstrators are angered about corruption and poor public services despite a heavy tax burden.Protests are also denouncing the billions of dollars spent to host the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.Sunday is the fourth major final Spain will play in five years, having won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships plus the 2010 World Cup.Inside the stadium, which appeared full, there was overwhelming support for Italy from the local fans, who were perhaps afraid of facing Spain in the final. Spain was booed early on every time it took the ball.Christian Maggio had the best chance of the first half in the 36th with a header inside the box that Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas did well to block.A minute later, Xavi Hernandez set up Spain's only real chance early on as Fernando Torres shot wide.Reverted to a three-man defense, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli made another tactical move to start the second half, replacing center back Andrea Barzagli with midfielder Riccardo Montolivo and putting De Rossi at the center of the defense.Seeking to inject some energy into his squad, Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque sent on Navas for David Silva in the 52nd and Navas had the first significant chance of the second half six minutes later with a long, low effort that Buffon controlled. The roles reversed as the second half wore on, with Italy controlling more and and Spain resorting more to counterattacks. Italy had a series of corner kicks at one point but had trouble producing chances.Navas threatened in the 92nd with a long shot that appeared to surprise Buffon but the goalkeeper quickly recovered. A minute later, Giaccherini hit the post and then Jordi Alba volleyed high from close range as all of a sudden there was a flurry of chances. In the shootout, Italy went first and Antonio Candreva, Alberto Aquilani, Daniele De Rossi, Sebastian Giovinco, Andrea Pirlo and Riccardo Montolivo each converted near perfect penalties for the Azzurri. Bonucci is a center back who rarely, if ever, takes penalties. However, Spain matched Italy shot for shot with Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Juan Mata and Sergio Busquets each finding the target before Navas stepped up.Buffon guessed right on Navas' shot but the ball was so close to the striker's left post that the goalkeeper had no chance.

Nigeria beat SKorea to reach U20 last 16

ISTANBUL (AP) - Portugal and Nigeria won their final Group B matches to reach the last 16 of the Under-20 World Cup on Thursday, while third-place South Korea still has a chance of advancing.Portugal striker Bruma scored his fourth and fifth goals of the event to help the two-time champions beat Cuba 5-0 and top the group, while Nigeria defeated South Korea 1-0 after an early goal by Olarenwaju Kayode and overtook the Asians for second place.Ricardo, Aladje and To Ze also found the net for Portugal, while Bruma almost added a sixth but hit the crossbar. It was Portugal's biggest ever win in the competition, improving on 3-0 defeats of Argentina in 1991 and the Netherlands four years later.Portugal won the title in 1989 and '91 and finished runner-up to Brazil two years ago. Cuba, which lost all three games and became the first team to be eliminated, was making its debut appearance.Nigeria secured its victory after Kayode was left unmarked by the South Korean defense and headed home a free kick by captain Abdul Ajagun in the ninth minute.South Korea still has a chance to advance as one of the best four third-place teams.Spain and France had already advanced from Group A, and Spain won the group with a 2-1 win over the French.Ghana rendered the United States last in the group with a 4-1 defeat of the Americans, who haven't passed the group stage since 2007.

Formula One: Alonso confident of halting Vettel express

Posted:

SILVERSTONE (AFP) - Fernando Alonso oozed cool self-confidence on Thursday when he arrived in the paddock at the British Grand Prix and said he still believed that he can overhaul Sebastian Vettel and win a third drivers world championship. The 31-year-old Spaniard acknowledged that Vettel's 36-points lead was significant, but stressed it was not insurmountable -- particularly if he could steer his Ferrari to victory ahead of the Red Bull driver in Sunday's 52-laps race.Being 36 points behind the leader, we don't have much more room to make mistakes or lose many more points, said Alonso. But on the other side we need to remain calm and do our job. If we can win races and if we can finish in front of Sebastian it will be great, but if we cannot, then we try and lose the minimum points.Last year I had an advantage around Monza time of 42 points and it was not enough. So being the eighth race and 36 points behind is not an ideal position, but it is not the end of the world.Alonso paid due respect to Vettel's consistency this season while both he and Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus have endured poor Grands Prix that have gifted the defending triple world champion a bigger lead.He said: I think he (Vettel) is doing a fantastic job in all the races. He has been nearly perfect with no down races, always performing well in qualifying and with very good races.Obviously I had two unlucky situations, one in Malaysia and one in Bahrain. Kimi was leading the championship and then was very close until he had two unlucky situations, one in Monaco and one in Canada which was a mixed race for him.So we need to keep fighting, we need to keep pushing to recover now these bad races we have had. Red Bull is improving really well, compared to the first part of the championship. We need to raise our game if we want to challenge him.Ferrari's form on high speed circuits so far this year has given them and Alonso optimism ahead of this weekend's contest. He said: It should be a good circuit for us. We have been more or less competitive here for the last three or four years, and it is the first circuit that is similar to China and Barcelona, which have been the best circuits for this year's car.We have some high hopes for this weekend. But, on the other hand, Red Bull has been quite strong and dominant here since 2009, so it will be a close and challenging weekend - with Mercedes as well who I am sure will be very, very strong as well.We have an interesting weekend ahead of us, but we can approach it with confidence, knowing we have a good opportunity.

Lorenzo breaks collarbone in Assen fall

Posted:

AMSTERDAM (AP) - Defending MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo broke his left collarbone in a high-speed crash on a rain-slicked track during practice for the Iveco TT in Assen on Thursday.Lorenzo, second in the standings behind fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, lost control of his Yamaha in afternoon training and was thrown off the motorbike on the Hoge Heide straight. He slid on his back along the soaked track before coming to a standstill on grass. He got up and gingerly held his left arm before being driven away in an ambulance.Race organizers said he would fly to Barcelona and undergo surgery there on Friday. The injury dents Lorenzo's hopes of retaining his title after he put himself in contention by winning three of the last six races. He had earlier powered to the fastest lap in morning practice before the arrival of showers that are forecast to plague Assen over the race meet, including on race day on Saturday.Marc Marquez posted the fastest time in the wet, lapping the track in 1 minute, 47.617 seconds on his Honda. Valentino Rossi was second and MotoGP championship leader Dani Pedrosa was third fastest.

Oil prices jump after positive US data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose sharply Thursday, extending the previous day's rally on the back of upbeat US economic data and easing concerns over China's liquidity crisis.New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate light sweet crude for August, closed at $97.05 a barrel, adding $1.55 from Wednesday's close. In London trade, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August gained $1.16 to settle at $102.82 a barrel.Data releases suggested US economic growth remains at a moderate pace: consumer spending rebounded in May from April's fall, incomes were higher, inflation pressures remain low, new jobless claims were slightly improved, and pending home sales were strong. It was pending home sales that caused oil bears the most damage as it surged 6.7 percent in May, easily beating expectations for a 1.1 percent rise, said Fawad Razaqzada of GFT.The oil market also rallied as Wall Street pushed higher for a third day, with bond yields falling again on easing worries that the Federal Reserve will soon cut back its stimulus program. The gains tracked a similar uptick in Asian equity markets after the US Commerce Department slashed the estimate of first quarter growth from 2.4 percent to 1.8 percent on Wednesday. The market took the weaker economic data to mean the Fed will maintain its $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program.Fed chairman Ben Bernanke last week said the US central bank could begin to wind down the bond purchases if the economy continued to improve.Prices were also supported by assurances from China that it would move in to stabilize a liquidity crisis that had gripped the country's financial markets. The People's Bank of China said Tuesday it had made money available to some firms in a bid to prevent a cash crunch that had sent shares into a tailspin. The gloom over the Chinese money market has eased, and is having a positive effect on oil prices, McCarthy said.

Dollar falls against euro but rises elsewhere

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro Thursday strengthened against the dollar on solid economic indicators even as the recovering US economy helped propel the greenback higher against other major currencies. The euro traded at $1.3035 at 2200 GMT, up from $1.3012 Wednesday night. The euro also rose against the Japanese yen, trading at 128.40 from 127.19.The dollar bought 98.43 yen, up from 97.72.The dollar also rose against the British pound and the Swiss franc. The euro's gains came after a European Commission monthly index of eurozone business and consumer confidence rose 1.8 points to 91.3 in June, the highest level since May 2012.Sentiment about Europe was also boosted by a German labor report that showed the unemployment rate at 6.8 percent, below the 6.9 percent expected by analysts, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey. The strong European numbers came despite recent statements from European central bankers pledging to keep monetary policy accommodative. The euro steadied above three-week lows against the greenback as recovery-positive data from the region helped lessen the sting of the blitz of dovish remarks this week from a bevy of area central bankers, said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions.Meanwhile, the dollar posted gains against other currencies after several economic indicators showed a strengthening US economy.US jobless claims fell, while US pending home sales surged in May to their highest level since late 2006.Consumer spending rose 0.3 percent in May, reversing a decline in April.Federal Reserve officials Thursday continued to emphasize that they would not hastily end the US central bank's aggressive bond-buying program and would only do so if the economy improves. The assurances helped propel equity markets higher. But David Song, currency analyst at DailyFX, said a growing number of Fed officials are becoming increasingly upbeat about the US economy. The bullish sentiment surrounding the reserve currency should gather pace in the second half of the year amid the growing discussion at the Federal Reserve to taper the asset-purchase program, Song said.Among other currencies, the pound fell to $1.5259 Thursday compared with $1.5313 Wednesday. The dollar rose to 0.9450 Swiss franc from 0.9428.

NASA set to launch sun-observation satellite

Posted:

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE (AP) - NASA on Thursday was poised to launch a satellite to observe a little-understood region just above the surface of the sun.Unlike a traditional liftoff, the Iris satellite was to cruise into Earth orbit on a Pegasus rocket dropped from an airplane after taking off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on California's central coast. The launch was to scheduled to occur at approximately 7:27 p.m. About 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast and at an altitude of 39,000 feet (11,880 meters), the rocket was to be released and ignite its engine for the climb to space. If all goes as planned, Iris will be boosted into orbit 400 miles (640 kilometers) above the Earth, unfurl its solar panels and begin its two-year mission after a checkout period.Previous sun-observing spacecraft have yielded a wealth of information about our nearest star and beamed back brilliant pictures of solar flares.Iris carries an ultraviolet telescope that can take high-resolution images every few seconds. Its focus is on a little-explored region of the sun that lies between the surface and the corona, the glowing white ring that's visible during eclipses. The goal is to learn more about how this mysterious region drives solar wind and to better predict space weather that can disrupt communications signals on Earth.Every time we look at the sun in more detail than we ever have before, it opens up a new window, NASA program scientist Jeffrey Newmark said earlier this week. The mission is cheap by NASA standards, costing only $182 million, and is managed by the space agency's Goddard Space Flight Center.Once in orbit, engineers will spend a month making sure Iris is in perfect health before powering on the telescope to begin observations. The launch was delayed by a day so that technicians at the Air Force base could restore power to launch range equipment after a weekend outage cut electricity to a swath of the central coast. The Pegasus, from Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Virginia, is a winged rocket designed for launching small satellites. First flown in 1990, Pegasus rockets have also been used to accelerate vehicles in hypersonic flight programs.

Oily fish helps fight breast cancer

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Eating a portion of tuna, salmon, sardines or other oily fish once or twice a week reduces the risk of breast cancer, according to a review published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) on Thursday.Researchers based in China looked at 26 previously published studies covering more than 800,000 volunteers in the United States, Europe and Asia whose health was monitored and who gave details about their eating habits.Oily fish is rich in so-called n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, or n-3 PUFAs, which are involved in the immune system, blood-vessel activity and chemical messaging in the brain. The group of n-3 PUFAs has four members, known by their initials of EPA, DPA and DHA, which are mainly found in oily fish, and ALA, which is chiefly found in nuts, seeds and leafy vegetables. The analysis showed that women with a high intake of n-3 PUFAs had a 14-percent reduction in risk of breast cancer compared with those who had a low intake. But the protective effect came only for fatty acids that come chiefly from fish, and not for ALA acids. Those who showed the most benefit were women in Asia, whose diet was richer in fish than in Europe and America. In statistical terms, every 0.1-gramme increase in fish fatty acids per day was linked to a five-percent reduction in breast cancer risk. As a guide for daily living, this means one or two portions of oily fish per person per week. Breast cancer has been dubbed a silent killer of women because it is often diagnosed too late. The disease accounted for 23 percent of total cancer cases among women and 14 percent of cancer deaths in 2008, according to figures in the study.Genetic heritage also plays a role in breast cancer, most notoriously in variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, although how this interacts or not with food, lifestyle and environmental factors is unclear.

Kiwis win T20 series after 2nd game rained off

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - New Zealand clinched the Twenty20 series against England after the second and final match between the teams was abandoned Thursday because of persistent rain, with just two balls having been bowled.Needing to win at The Oval to square the series 1-1, England lost Michael Lumb to the second ball of its innings to lie on 2-1 when drizzle that had been falling during the toss and when play began turned heavier. The rain didn't relent and a decision was taken to call the match off at 9.07pm local time (2107 GMT) more than 2 ½ hours after the start of play. The Kiwis won the first match at the same London venue on Tuesday by five runs, ensuring they will head home having completed a limited-overs double over England this summer. They won the ODI series 2-1, with England taking the tests series 2-0.The washout denied Kevin Pietersen, who turned 33 on Thursday, any time in the middle on his return to the England team after three months out with a knee injury.England has more important business this summer the Ashes series against Australia begins next month.

Watson relishes Ashes opening role

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Shane Watson is fired up by the prospect of opening for Australia in the upcoming Ashes series in England, the all-rounder said on Thursday.Australia's squad contains several openers but new coach Darren Lehmann has said he wants Watson at the top of the order.Watson did his best to play himself into some sort of form with a rapid 90, off just 94 balls and including 20 fours, on the second day of Australia's tour match against Somerset at Taunton on Thursday as the visitors closed on 266 for four in reply to the west country county's 320.After a rain-shortened day, Watson spoke of his delight at the vote of confidence he'd received from former Australia batsman Lehmann, brought in after South African Mickey Arthur was sensationally sacked just 16 days before the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge on July 10.It's nice to get that confirmation and it's a hugely exciting challenge for me, said Watson, one of four players controversially dropped during the 4-0 Test series loss in India in March for failing to provide written feedback on the team's performance requested by Arthur.Darren is very up front about things, from my experience of him, but he also does care when he needs to, added Watson. He is black and white in a really good way. It's nice for me personally to know I have the backing of the coach and the opportunity to open is something I am very excited about.I didn't know exactly what my role would be until Darren took over as coach. I had a few chats with Michael Clarke and Mickey Arthur about it, but there was no confirmation.Darren has been more definite about where he wants me to bat.It doesn't mean any more security because if I am not performing I can't expect to get picked. But I'm very happy about it.England hold the Ashes after a 3-1 series win in Australia in 2010/11 and also won the preceding Ashes clash in England in 2009.Much of their recent success against Australia has been built on penetrative swing and seam bowling, with Watson saying England's attack represented the ultimate challenge for an opener, a role he was thrust into in 2009.Taking on the quicks with a brand new ball is something I never knew I would enjoy until the last Ashes series here in 2009, he said.Ricky Ponting gave me the opportunity through the middle of that series and it's something I did and do love.I feel my game and my mentality is now suited to opening the batting. The English quicks are as good as there are in the world at the moment and have been for the last few years. It is the ultimate challenge to take on the best bowlers with a brand new ball in what sometimes will be bowler-friendly conditions. If I can't get up for that, there is no point in playing. As for his bowling, the 32-year-old medium-pacer added: Certainly opening the batting means I can't bowl as much. But I know I can contribute with the ball and I do love bowling. As for Australia's chances of regaining the Ashes, Watson said: We are obviously the underdogs coming into the series and we haven't played well, especially in India a few months ago.We know we are going to have to be at our best very consistently throughout the series to have the success we want. England have a very good side, which has been the case for quite a while now. It's going to be a massive challenge for us and we are all very excited about it.
