Pakistan rejects Afghan terrorism accusation Posted: UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Pakistan's UN ambassador is angrily criticized Afghanistan's UN envoy for saying that terrorist sanctuaries exist in Pakistan and some elements in the country are using terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy.Pakistani envoy Masood Khan called Afghan Ambassador Zahir Tanin's statement to the Security Council on Thursday disingenuous and not good diplomacy.Khan countered that terrorists operate on both sides of the porous border. Many attacks against Pakistan are planned on Afghan soil, he said. That is why we need more aggressive policing and surveillance of the border.Tanin said Afghans are the main victims of terrorism and so long as terrorist sanctuaries continue to exist in Pakistan's soil and some elements continue to use terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy, peace will not prevail.
Spain crush Tahiti 10-0 in Confederations Cup Posted: RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - In a one-sided match at the Confederations Cup, World Cup winner Spain crushed the Pacific islanders from Tahiti 10-0 on Thursday a result that wasnt as bad as some had suggested beforehand.Tahiti coach Eddy Etaeta said he feared Spain might score 15 or 20. Still, the winning margin was the largest in a Confederations Cup match. The previous record margin was six, when Brazil beat Saudi Arabia 8-2 in 1999 and when Brazil beat Australia 6-0 in 1997.Fernando Torres, who missed a penalty late in the match, scored four goals. David Villa added three goals, David Silva two and Juan Mata one.Tahiti was the crowd favorite at the Maracana stadium with Brazilians wildly cheering the underdogs and jeering Spain. When Spanish midfielder Mata tried to score with a bicycle kick with the score at 4-0, the effort was met with loud booing.Torres miss from a penalty late also drew wild cheers. The ball bounced off the crossbar and Tahiti keeper Mikael Roche raised his hands in celebration as if hed stopped it. That also drew thunderous applause. They (Brazilians) are always on the side of the underdog, meaning Tahiti, Del Bosque said. I believe the fans respected the show and enjoyed the match. The game had the tone of a practice game or a friendly. Even before it began, the outcome was never in doubt. The spirit was set by Tahiti coach Eddy Etaeta, who put a flower lei, or necklace, around the neck of Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque.Etaeta, who called playing Spain a Christmas present, said before the match that Spain might score 15 or 20 goals. We lost 10-0 but we won the hearts of the Brazilian public. So obrigado, obrigados a tudos, he said after the game, saying Thank You everyone in Portuguese. Etaeta said it was frustrating that his team was now better known in Brazil than at home.Del Bosque defended Tahitis place in the tournament, despite some criticizing the inclusion of the tiny island with only 180,000 residents. They are the champions of Oceania, Del Bosque said. Thats football. They did what they had to do and they deserved to be here. We are not the ones to decide.Tahitian players also draped trinkets around the neck of the Spanish players just before the start, another gesture of friendship and respect for the Spanish side.Tahiti attacked from the start and was just 1-0 down after 15 minutes, hardly an illustration of the gulf between the world champions and a team made up of amateurs who hold down day jobs. But that did not last long, with Spain leading 4-0 at the break. The match was lopsided, but there have been worse.Spain added six in the second half and could easily have added plenty more. The game burst into life with Villas goal in the 49th, then Torres in the 57th followed by Villa again seven minutes later. The Tahitians tired as the game wore on and only found their way into the Spanish half a handful of times. Keeper Mikael Roche let in 10, but still made several sprawling saves. They would have loved to have scored one single goal, Etaeta said. It didnt happen, theres something missing really. Theyre a bit disappointed. Tahiti had conceded naive goals, he said. The victory for Spain goes with a 2-1 win over Uruguay in the opener. Tahiti lost 6-1 to Nigeria in its opener. The largest margin of victory in a FIFA match came in 2001, when Australia beat American Samoa 31-0 in Oceania qualifying for the World Cup.In the World Cup, the record is nine, set three times. Hungary beat South Korea 9-0 in 1954, Yugoslavia routed Zaire 9-0 in 1974 and Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1 in 1982.The biggest rout in football happened in 2002 when Stade Olympique de lEmyrne scored 149 own-goals in a match against AS Adema in Madagascar in protest of what it claimed was partial refereeing. AS Adema won 149-0.

Li Na dumped out in Eastbourne by rising Vesnina Posted: EASTBOURNE (AFP) - Chinas Li Na missed her chance for a semi-final spot at the ATP-WTA Eastbourne International on a muggy Thursday as the second seed lost to Russian Elena Vesnina 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.Vesnina, winner along with compatriot Ekaterina Makarova of the Roland Garros doubles title less than a fortnight ago, carried confidence from her grand slam trophy onto the slick grass at Devonshire park as she beat her first top 10 opponent in two years.Australian Open finalist Li was competing at the pre-Wimbledon event for the fifth time and had never advanced past the second round. She has now lost three of her four matches against Vesnina, five years her junior at age 26.Today was a little bit of surprise, the way shes playing, said Li. I think sometimes I can play well, but sometimes I think I lose concentration on the court. Thats why the match was going like up, down a little bit.I would have liked to have some more matches, but Im looking forward to Wimbledon. Tennis is in the mind and my mind can go somewhere else. Thats my problem right now. After play started around an hour late due to mist in the air which made the grass too slippery to play on, Li began with a break of the Russian but was pegged back for 2-2 before Vesnina took the set into a tiebreaker and won it on her first set point after 55 minutes. In the second set, double-faults spelled doom for Li, who twice was broken on her misfiring serve as Vesnina earned a 5-3 lead after losing a break in the seventh game.Vesnina then served out the victory to advance into her first career semi-final on grass.Im really excited about this, said Vesnina. Im very happy to win, It was a tough match, especially against Li Na. I like to play on grass, I feel it suits my game. Im really enjoying the surface this week. The world number 36 will next face the winner from compatriot and sixth seed Maria Kirilenko and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki won a two-hour struggle between former champions as she defeated Makarova 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, her sixth win without a loss over the Russian. She came out playing aggressively, playing well, said Wozniacki. But I found my game to make it a good match out there. Shes strong on grass so this was a good win for me.Wozniacki stared slowly, losing the opening set but running off nine games in a row to claim the second and reach 3-0 in the third. She stuttered by dropping serve at 4-2 but broke back to love as she moved onto victory. The Dane faces 41st-ranked qualifier Jamie Hampton, who beat Lucie Safarova 3-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 to become the first American to go this far at Eastbourne since Jennifer Capriati a decade ago.Hamptons victory was a repeat of her success against Safarova in the French Open first round.
Els shoots 63, takes 1-shot lead in Germany Posted: MUNICH (AP) - Ernie Els took the lead in the first round of the BMW International Open on Thursday after an eagle and seven birdies steered him to a 9-under 63.The South African, who won the British Open in 2002 and 2012 and the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997, almost had a second eagle at the last that would have equaled a course record.Still, he was content with a two-putt birdie that gave him a one-stroke lead.It doesnt really mean much until Sunday. But getting into the race, so to speak, early on in the tournament is nice, to be right in the hunt, Els said.Matthew Baldwin of England, Swedens Alex Noren, Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen and Germanys Martin Kaymer, who delighted the home crowd in the afternoon by finishing with three successive birdies, and nine in all, have a share of second place after carding 64s.I had a lot of chances on the back nine and I pretty much made all of them, said Kaymer, who won this tournament in 2008.Baldwin and Noren both had eight birdies in the morning, while Derksen had six, as well as an eagle in the afternoon.English pair Matthew Nixon and Tom Lewis, along with Alexander Levy of France, are tied for sixth, one stroke further back.Hats off, it was just everything went right, holed a lot of putts and thats that, really, Nixon said. I had two eagles and my dad is always telling me Im rubbish at par-5s so hopefully hell feel better about that.Els finished tied for fourth at the U.S. Open last week and had a share of sixth place at the Wentworth Club in his previous two tournaments.Ive really been working hard at my game, the 43-year-old said. I could feel that things were coming around a bit. Ive had a bit of an iffy year up to now, but I really feel that my swing feels good and my body feels good, so I can swing the club properly.Els started at the 10th, and fired five birdies in the outward 31. He holed a 40-foot birdie putt on the short second, before doing brilliantly on the par-five sixth.Despite finding himself in the rough facing a flag guarded by water, he drove the ball almost 250 yards to within five feet of the hole, before putting for the eagle. Its just a pleasure to play, not to go through a torture chamber like I did at the U.S. Open. So, a nice start, Els said.American Dustin Johnson was among a group of 10 to finish with 6-under 66s, including South Africas Brandon Stone on his professional debut.I drove it well, hit it well. I holed a couple putts but I missed quite a few short ones, said Johnson, who managed six birdies.Im happy with where Im at right now and Im looking forward to coming back in the morning and playing better.
Messi summoned to testify on alleged tax fraud Posted: BARCELONA (AP) - Lionel Messi and his father were ordered by a Spanish court on Thursday to appear for questioning in September as part of an investigation into tax fraud allegations.A court in the Mediterranean coastal town of Gava near Barcelona accepted a state prosecutors complaint alleging that Messi and father Jorge defrauded the Spanish tax office of 4 million euros ($5.3 million). The Barcelona and Argentina star and his father will appear before judge Anju Deb Rani in Gava on Sept. 17. That will form part of an investigation to determine whether grounds exist to charge them with tax evasion. The court said in a statement that the judges acceptance of the complaint was a routine step.To move forward with the investigation a series of procedural steps will be carried out like taking testimony of the people necessary so as to clarify if a criminal offense has been committed or not, the court said.If charged and found guilty, Messi and his father could face a fine amounting to 150 percent of the concealed earnings and between two and six years in prison, although an out-of-court deal is another possible outcome.Court officials told The Associated Press that Messi and his father will have to appear in person for a session that will be closed to the public. The timing of the court appearance could coincide with Barcelonas opening game in the Champions League, set to be played either on Sept. 17 or 18.The court accepted the complaint lodged by prosecutor Raquel Amada on June 12 accusing the pair of not paying the correct taxes from revenue earned from image rights on Messis income tax returns from the years 2007, 2008 and 2009. The complaint said they supposedly used a network of shell companies in tax havens such as Belize and Uruguay to avoid Messis tax obligations.Messi has denied wrongdoing. He has received public backing from Barcelona club president Sandro Rosell and former president Joan Laporta, who was in charge during the years of the allegations.
US does not rule out talks on Taliban prisoner swap Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States is not ruling out discussions with the Taliban on a prisoner swap as it works to bring home the only US soldier held captive by the militants, a US official said Thursday. As Washington works to schedule talks with the Taliban, there is a recognition that the Islamist militia will likely want to discuss the release of senior operatives held in the US military jail in Guantanamo Bay.We have not made a decision to transfer any Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay, though we anticipate, as Ive said, that the Taliban will all raise this issue, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters. She stressed that winning the release of US soldier Bowe Bergdahl, captured on June 30, 2009 by the Taliban, was a priority for the United States.Well talk with the Taliban ... about the safe return of Sergeant Bergdahl. Hes been gone far too long, Psaki said.We continue to call for and work towards his safe and immediate release. But she stressed no date or venue had yet been set for the direct US-Taliban talks, after a dispute over the naming of the Talibans new office in Qatar appeared to have scuppered initial plans to meet this week.Special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins, who will lead the talks, is still ready to go to the region, Psaki said. She implied Dobbins could fly with US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is heading to Qatar on Friday. Psaki emphatically ruled out, however, that Kerry himself would meet with the Taliban.Bergdahl was captured in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. He said in a video that he was captured when he fell behind his unit during a patrol.Although the process of talking with the Taliban has not even started yet, Psaki stressed that the administration would work closely with Congress in coordinating these decisions as well. The Pentagon would also have to be notified and consulted if there were any plans to release Guantanamo prisoners.Up to 17 Taliban militants are believed to be held at Guantanamo, although only five or six are thought to be a focus of the Talibans proposed prisoner swap.
Bomber targets election center after Iraqis vote Posted: FALLUJAH (AP) - A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a ballot-counting center in western Iraq late Thursday, officials said, killing at least four people after the polls closed in elections in two of the countrys most volatile provinces that had already been delayed once over security fears. The attacker struck at the end of what had been a relatively calm election day in Sunni-majority Anbar and Ninevah provinces, both hotbeds of anti-government unrest. A decision by the central government to postpone elections there had raised concerns that voters there would be disenfranchised, adding to their grievances with the Shiite-led government.Security had been a top concern ahead of Thursdays vote. Thousands of policemen and soldiers were deployed to secure the elections, and authorities imposed a vehicle ban in major cities in the two provinces to protect against car bombings as voting got underway for candidates who will serve on provincial-level councils.Iraq is weathering its worst spike in violence in half a decade, with nearly 2,000 people killed since the start of April. Much of the violence is the work of the Sunni extremist al-Qaida branch in Iraq. The bombing happened in Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad. There were conflicting casualty tolls. Two police officers in Anbar said at least four people were killed and five more were wounded. Talib Humadi, a councilman from Anbar, said the blast killed seven people.Authorities quickly imposed a curfew throughout the province after the attack.Earlier, police said a mortar attack killed one person in Ramadi while polls were open. The police officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they werent authorized to speak to reporters.
US welcomes Qatar decision on Taliban name change Posted: UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United States on Thursday welcomed Qatars decision to take down a sign that cast the Talibans new office in Doha as a rival Afghan embassy saying the militant group cant represent itself as an emirate, government or sovereign. The Taliban held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday in which they hoisted their flag and a banner with the name they used while in power more than a decade ago: Political Office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.U.S. deputy ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo told the U.N. Security Council Thursday the United States does not recognize that name and is pleased that Qatar has clarified that the name of the office is the Political Office of the Afghan Taliban, and has had the sign with the incorrect name in front of the door taken down. The Taliban move angered Afghan President Hamid Karzai who suspended security negotiations with the U.S. and scuttled a peace delegation to the Taliban on Wednesday. An Afghan government spokesman said Thursday that Karzai is now willing to join planned peace talks with the Taliban provided that the Taliban flag and nameplate are removed from the Doha office and he receives a formal letter from the United States supporting the Afghan government.Afghanistans U.N. Ambassador Zahir Tanin told the council that the Talibans rather theatrical inauguration of the Doha office contradicted the principles under which it was established namely that it would be a venue for direct negotiations, that it would not serve as a Taliban government, embassy, emirate or sovereign, and that it would not engage in or support terrorism or violence.Raising the Taliban flag on Tuesday in Doha was just a reminder of a dark and bloody past from which our country still struggles to emerge, Tanin said. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the sole sovereign and legitimate authority chosen by Afghan people and recognized and supported by the international community.Tanin said the public statement by the Taliban representative in Doha went against the very spirit of peace because it lacked a clear commitment to peace talks with the Afghan High Peace Council and made an explicit reference to the continuation of violence.DiCarlo recalled that Karzai and U.S. President Barack Obama called on Qatar in January to facilitate an office for the purposes of negotiations between the Afghan High Peace Council and the authorized representatives of the Taliban. The United States supports the opening of the Political Office of the Afghan Taliban for this purpose, DiCarlo said. We have underscored that the office must not be treated as, or represent itself as, an embassy or other office representing the Afghan Taliban as an emirate, government or sovereign.DiCarlo said that while there may be bumps in the road, the fact that the parties have an opportunity to talk and discuss Afghanistans future is very important.Under Taliban rule, girls were barred from school and women were barred from many jobs. Di Carlo said that the United States will continue to stand strongly with Afghan women to protect and advance their hard-won gains, including the right to education and jobs, since the Taliban was ousted.
Obama nominating Comey as FBI director Friday Posted: WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama on Friday plans to nominate President George W. Bushs former No. 2 at the Justice Department, Jim Comey, to lead the FBI as the agency grapples with privacy debates over a host of recently exposed investigative tactics. If confirmed by the Senate, Comey would serve a 10-year tenure and replace Robert Mueller, who has held the job since the week before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Mueller is set to resign on Sept. 4 after overseeing the bureaus transformation into one the countrys chief weapons against terrorism. The White House said in a statement that Obama would announce his choice of Comey on Friday afternoon.Comey was a federal prosecutor who served for several years as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York before coming to Washington after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks as deputy attorney general. In recent years he has been an executive at defense company Lockheed Martin, general counsel to a hedge fund, board member at HSBC Holdings and lecturer on national security law at Columbia University Law School. The White House may hope that Comeys Republican background and strong credentials will help him through Senate confirmation at a time when some of Obamas nominees have been facing tough battles. Republicans have said they see no major obstacles to his confirmation, although he is certain to face tough questions about his hedge fund work, his ties to Wall Street as well as how he would handle current, high-profile FBI investigations. The FBI is responsible for both intelligence and law enforcement with more than 36,000 employees. It has faced questions in recent weeks over media leak probes involving The Associated Press and Fox News; the Boston Marathon bombings; the attack at Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans; and two vast government surveillance programs into phone records and online communications. The leaker of those National Security Agency programs, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, also is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. And just this week Mueller revealed the FBI uses drones for surveillance of stationary subjects and said the privacy implications of such operations are worthy of debate.
Two dead as fireworks level Montreal area factory Posted: MONTREAL (AFP) - Two people were killed after a series of explosions at a fireworks factory near Montreal early Thursday which flattened the building.Fireworks could be seen popping in the smoke billowing from the warehouse in Coteau-du-lac, Quebec, 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Montreal, for nearly three hours after an initial spark at about 9 a.m. local time (1300 GMT).The noise from the blasts could also be heard from several miles away, according to reports, before some 150 firefighters managed to get the blaze under control. The two dead are believed to be employees of fireworks maker BEM.Authorities are still trying to determine what caused the fire, Quebec police spokeswoman Joyce Kemp said.Dozens of people meanwhile were evacuated from nearby homes and a campground as a precaution after the fire erupted. A highway connecting Montreal and Toronto was also closed, as was a train line linking Montreal to Ottawa.
Scientists make detailed 3-D map of human brain Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - A deceased 65-year-old woman has provided scientists with the material for the first super high resolution three-dimensional digital model of the human brain, researchers said Thursday. The roadmap of the mind was painstakingly created by scientists in Germany and Canada and is 50 times more detailed than the last attempt, containing 100,000 times more data than a typical MRI, they said. The 3-D map, described in the US journal Science, aims to offer a new perspective for scientists who want to study everything from Alzheimers to Parkinsons disease and other disorders.Known as BigBrain, it is the first ever brain model in 3-D which really presents a realistic human brain with all the cells and all the structures of a human brain, said senior author Karl Zilles, professor at the Julich Aachen Research Alliance in Germany. It was made from 7,400 sections of a human brain, carefully sliced 20 micrometers thick. The sections were then mounted on slides, stained to reveal cell structures and digitized with a high resolution scanner. The result is an anatomical scaffold of the brains structures and pathways, into which scientists can plug further information about live human conditions for detailed study.Weve raised the level of insight orders of magnitude beyond what was possible at the turn of the 20th century, said Alan Evans, a professor at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University in Canada. This data set will revolutionize our ability to understand internal brain organization.More information is available at BigBrain.Loris.ca.The project is the first to create such advanced imagery. Other brain mapping initiatives have been launched by the United States and China.

New technology, however has made it possible to hear his fathers voice for the first time. This moment was the result of a microchip placed in the three-year-olds brain by doctors at the University of North Carolina. Because Grayson doesnt have a cochlear nerve for an implant to attach to, the implant was positioned on his brain stem.Grayson - the first child in the United States to receive the brain implant - will require several years of therapy to improve his hearing and speech. |
Oil falls most since November on Fed comments Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - Oil was swept up in the broad sell-off in stocks and bonds Thursday, as a combination of weak Chinese manufacturing data and the Federal's Reserve's shifting stance on economic stimulus rattled energy markets.Oil had its biggest one-day price drop since November. U.S. benchmark oil for July delivery sank $2.84, or 2.9 percent, to finish at $95.40 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gasoline futures fell more than 3 percent.Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, was down $3.97, or 3.7 percent, to end at $102.94 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London. On Wednesday Fed chairman Ben Bernanke suggested that he was optimistic about the U.S. economy and that the Fed might start scaling back its massive $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program this year if conditions continue to improve. The Fed could end the program by the middle of next year, Bernanke said. The Fed program has kept borrowing costs near historic lows for consumers and business. It has also helped boost the equities and energy markets.Stocks and bonds sold off immediately after Bernanke's comments. Oil didn't react much because Bernanke spoke just as U.S. energy markets closed Wednesday.Lower stocks and a stronger dollar put pressure on oil prices. Once trading opened in Asia Thursday oil fell sharply, in tandem with Asian stock markets. Bernanke's comments also gave a boost to the dollar. Oil traders look to the stock market as a measure of confidence in the U.S. economy, while a strong dollar makes oil more expensive for holders of other currencies. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 354 points, or 2.3 percent, Thursday to close at 14,758. Shares of Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp., both Dow components, fell by more than 2 percent. The euro slipped to $1.3197 from $1.3274 in New York a day earlier. The yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to its highest level since August 2011.Also weighing on oil prices was a survey showing a slowdown in manufacturing in China. HSBC's preliminary purchasing managers' index fell to a nine-month low of 48.3 in June, down from 49.6 in May. Numbers below 50 indicate a contraction. With mature economies like Europe and the U.S. struggling to expand at a steady pace, China and emerging markets have accounted for most of the growth in oil demand over the past several years.A weakening in Chinese industrial activity could easily translate to a reduced flow of products exports out of the US Gulf, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates, in a daily report.Still, Ritterbusch and most others don't expect a free-fall in the price of oil. He said fears of an escalation of the civil war in Syria should support oil around the $94 level.
Injured Vettori ruled out of New Zealand squad Posted: LONDON (AP) - New Zealand cricketer Daniel Vettori has undergone surgery on his left Achilles tendon, ruling him out of the two Twenty20 matches against England later this month. The left-arm spinner had only recently returned to the national side after nearly a year out but has looked uncomfortable fielding and dropped down the order to No. 10 against England in the Champions Trophy.Dan has been suffering from this injury for the past year and surgery was the only option to prolong his career with the Black Caps, Physiotherapist Paul Close said.Injuries to Grant Elliott and Tim Southee have ruled them out of the Twenty20 matches against England on June 25 and 27, while Kane Williamson and Luke Ronchi have left the squad.Test opener Hamish Rutherford will join the squad, along with Tom Latham and spinner Roneel Hira. The Kiwis will prepare for the series with a match against Kent on Saturday.Squad: Brendon McCullum (captain), Corey Anderson, Doug Bracewell, Ian Butler, James Franklin, Matin Guptill, Roneel Hira, Tom Latham, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Ross Taylor.
