Balochistan plans increased spending on infrastructure

QUETTA, June 20: Balochistan’s Rs198.4 billion deficit budget for the financial year 2013-14 proposes increased spending on social and economic infrastructure and plans to collect more provincial taxes, contain current expenditure and abolish the role of legislators in suggesting new development schemes.

National flag hoisted in Tirah

LANDI KOTAL, June 20: Security forces hoisted on Thursday the national flag at the historic Bagh Markaz in Tirah Valley, marking a wipe-out of militants from their stronghold.

A statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations said that the Bagh-Maidan area was cleared of militants after a successful operation by security forces.

Nisar bans new arms licences: No VIP duty for Rangers, FC any more

ISLAMABAD, June 20: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has ordered withdrawal of Rangers and Frontier Constabulary personnel from security squads of federal ministers and the so-called VIPs.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the minister announced a ban on new arms licences and display of weapons.

Hashmi demands withdrawal of budget

ISLAMABAD, June 20: As the fate of early collection of an enhanced general sales tax (GST) seemed hanging in the balance, the PML-N government’s first budget received more battering in the National Assembly on Thursday with one senior opposition figure demanding withdrawal of the whole budget as had happened once in the 1980s.

On the final day of a general debate on the budget for fiscal 2013-14, opposition criticism seemed harder than the defence by the supporters of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s 16-day-old government.

Senators walk out of house over power tariff hike

ISLAMABAD, June 20: The opposition members staged a walkout from the Senate on Thursday to register their protest over the recent hike in electricity tariff and criticised the government for not taking the parliament into confidence over the ongoing Afghan talks in Qatar.

Parliamentary leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Raza Rabbani and Mushahid Hussain Sayed of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q speaking on points of order regretted that they had come to know through the newspapers that Pakistan had played a key role in US-Taliban breakthrough whereas they had been kept in the dark on the issue.

PTI lawmaker wants Taseer’s assassin freed honourably

ISLAMABAD, June 20: A lawmaker of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) raised many eyebrows in the National Assembly on Thursday by demanding an “honourable” release of the convicted murderer of then Punjab governor Salman Taseer.

But the PTI took some time to disown the outburst made by Mujahid Ali Khan, its member from the Mardan district, while taking part in the budget debate after a PPP member from Sindh, Nafisa Shah, protested against it.

Asif opposes subsidised gas supply to fertiliser industry

ISLAMABAD, June 20: Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif said on Thursday that supply of 500 million cubic feet of gas per day to the CNG sector and subsidised gas to the fertiliser industry would not be allowed to continue.

Speaking at a conference on power sector reforms, he said the supply of gas to the CNG and fertiliser sectors at the existing rates were “unfair and simply unacceptable”.
