Tennis: Hampton to face Vesnina in Eastbourne final

Posted:

EASTBOURNE (AFP) - American qualifier Jamie Hampton will line up in the first final of her career against Russian Elena Vesnina in a first-time meeting for the title at the pre-Wimbledon ATP-WTA Eastbourne International on Saturday. The 41st-ranked Hampton earned her place with a 6-7 (8/10) 7-5, 6-3 upset of former world number one Caroline Wozniacki on Friday, while Vesnina followed up her ouster of China's second seed Li Na in the quarter-finals by crushing Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-2, 6-0 in just 51 minutes. The Hampton-Wozniacki clash took nearly three hours but could have ended much earlier had fifth seed Wozniacki managed to complete a straight-sets win.As it was, the Dane was made to pay the price for missed opportunities by her surprise opponent in their first meeting.Obviously I would have loved to have won today, it would have been worth it to be out there for three hours, said Wozniacki.Actually we played a very good match. The wind that was there, it was so difficult. But I had my chances. I didn't take them, and, she played very well, I have to say.Overall I'm feeling good, I feel happy to be on grass. I feel like my game is where I want it to be. Hopefully at Wimbledon I'll do well. The match was played in blustery conditions on the English south coast after several days of sunshine and atypical calm weather.Hampton squandered five set points in the opening set to give the momentum to her opponent, But Wozniacki was unable to serve out the second set leading 5-4 after winning the first in a tiebreaker and came up short in the third.Hampton, 23, will move into position as US number three behind Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens after the best week of her career.Hampton was the first American woman since Jennifer Capriati a decade ago to play the semis at Devonshire park and is the first qualifier on the WTA to reach a final this season. The last American to win here was Chanda Rubin in 2003.Hampton upset Wozniacki while playing in only her third career grass event and will compete at Wimbledon next week for only the second time after reaching the second round a year ago.Wozniacki was denied a chance at her second career grass court title after winning Eastbourne in 2009.Vesnina will aim for her second career trophy after making a breakthrough for the Hobart honours in January. The Russian stands 1-7 in career finals.Men's semis at the joint event featured Spain's Feliciano Lopez against Croatian Ivan Dodig and Italian seventh seed Andreas Seppi facing french number two Gilles Simon.

Spain, France win Under-20 WCup opening matches

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AP) - Spain showed why it is favored to win the Under-20 World Cup by beating the United States 4-1 on Friday in its opener after doubles from star strikers Jese and Gerard Deulofeu.France also turned in a strong performance in the other Group A match, scoring two second-half goals within four minutes to win 3-1 against Ghana.Spain opened the scoring when Deulofeu fires a shot across the goal mouth and Jese volleyed the ball into the net in the fifth minute. The Americans could have leveled in the 13th but Joaquin Hernandez shot wide when faced with an open net. The U.S. team controlled the tempo for the next 15 minutes but could only contain Spain's strikers for so long.Deulofeu received the ball outside the area, sidestepped a defender and sent a blistering shot just beyond goalkeeper Cody Cropper to make it 2-0 in the 42nd. The European champions caught the defense sleeping two minutes later.Javier Manquillo made a great run, passed to Jese, who was lurking in the area, and the Real Madrid striker scored his second goal just before halftime.Spain seemed to content to sit back for much of the second half, but again its counterattack paid dividends. Deulofeu received a long ball, got around Cropper and scored his second. The Americans pulled one back when Luis Gil scored from just outside the area in the 77th.France, which lost to Spain in the semifinals of the Under-19 European Championship, showed it has the attack to go far in the tournament. After Ghana missed several early chances, France dominated the Group A encounter for much of the second period. The French hit the post in the 51st minute before Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia put the team ahead with a header in the 65th. Three minutes later, Kondogbia chipped a nifty pass into the area for Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo to shoot between the legs of goalkeeper Eric Antwi.France forward Jean Christophe Bahebeck scored a third in 79th, before Ghana substitute Yiadom Boakye pulled one back in the 85th.Today, we were lacking a lot of things. We had a very average game but in the end we won 3-1, France coach Pierre Mankowski said. So I told the boys it was important to win because it was the first game. Clearly we can enhance our game, and in fact we have to be stronger for the next games.Mankowski was full of praise for Kondogbia and Sanogo for wreaking havoc on Ghana's defense, using their size and quickness to outflank the smaller defenders and to get to loose balls in the area. Sanogo has shown the most improvement since he spent a year playing for Sevilla, Mankowski said. Now he understands the right moment to try and score, the moments to make a difference, Mankowski said. When he is good on the pitch, the team is good.Ghana coach Sellas Tetteh, who managed his side to the 2009 title, blamed the loss on several defensive lapses and missed chances when his team dominated in the first 20 minutes. It's not good that we lost but I believe there were a few things there we could take home, he said. We had a wonderful first half, but we were a little bit sloppy midway in the second. We also conceded that early goal. That created a lot of problems for us. We finished the game stronger and that is positive.Security has been stepped up at all seven sites following weeks of sometimes violent protests after riot police cracked down on environmental activists who opposed plans to remove trees and develop Gezi Park in Istanbul. But the protests this week have given way to peaceful resistance, and there were no signs of protesters Friday at the Ali Sami Yen Arena.Instead, the problem was a lack of spectators. The match only attracted 2,800 fans, leaving much of the 50,000-seat stadium empty. That confirmed FIFA's fears ahead of the tournament that tickets were selling too slowly, with only 300,000 of the 1.3 million tickets sold.South Korea came from a goal down to beat tournament newcomer Cuba 2-1 in the Group B opener. Reyes opened the scoring for Cuba in the seventh minute, only for the Asian champions to score twice in the second half. Kwon Chang-hoon scored a penalty in the 51st, and Rey Seung-woo hit the winner in the 83rd.In other Group B match, Portugal led 2-0 over Nigeria, only for Ajagun to score twice within 10 minutes to draw the African side level. But Bruma added a second in the 69th to give the Portugese the win.

Neymar and Balotelli face off in Confed Cup

Posted:

SALVADOR (AP) - Neymar and Mario Balotelli will be attracting most of the attention when Brazil and Italy play to decide the Group A winner at the Confederations Cup on Saturday. The strikers are two of the tournament's biggest stars and have played up to expectations so far, scoring two goals each in the first two matches.Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said Friday it will be nice to see them together when the teams play in the northeastern city of Salvador.Brazil and Italy have already secured a spot in the next round. The group winner will probably avoid Spain in the semifinals of the warm-up tournament, although both coaches are downplaying the significance of delaying a matchup against the World Cup champions. There was a lot of hype surrounding Neymar and Balotelli ahead of the Confederations Cup, and they have been decisive for their national teams so far.Balotelli scored a remarkable winner when Italy defeated Mexico 2-1 in its opener last Sunday, then converted a penalty kick that helped the Italians edge Japan 4-3 on Wednesday.Neymar netted an outstanding goal from outside the area to open the scoring in Brazil's 3-0 rout of Japan in the tournament's opening match last Saturday, then had another remarkable strike to put the hosts on the board first in the 2-0 victory over Mexico on Wednesday. The newly signed Barcelona forward also set up the second goal against Mexico after a nifty move past two Mexican defenders inside the area. The problem with Neymar, as with all great players, is that you can't stop him just by marking well, Prandelli said. You need to do a good job limiting the spaces.Neymar said he became friends with Balotelli after Brazil played Italy to a 2-2 draw in a friendly in Geneva earlier this year. Brazilian media even reported that the players are planning to travel together in Brazil after the end of the competition.I'm a fan of Balotelli, Neymar said recently. He is one of the greatest in the world. I've always watched him play. He is a great person and I've always admired his moves.Brazil and Italy are tied with six points atop Group A, but the hosts are ahead on goal difference and can secure first place with a draw on Saturday. Italy has to beat Brazil to likely avoid Spain, which is leading Group B.Prandelli said. We are not thinking about Spain at all. If we have to play Spain, we will talk about it later.Although Neymar and Balotelli are set to start on Saturday, both teams will be without key players for the match at the Arena Fonte Nova.Italy will miss star midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who is nursing a strained right leg muscle, adding to Prandelli's problems in midfield. The coach also won't be able to count on Daniele De Rossi, who is suspended after receiving two yellow cards.Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will be without defensive midfielder Paulinho because of a left ankle sprain sustained in the match against Mexico. Doctors said the injury is not serious but the player will be left out so he can fully recover ahead of the semifinals.Chelsea defender David Luiz sustained what the Brazilian federation called a minor fracture in his nose after being hit in the face against Mexico, but he is set to play on Saturday despite the injury.

Els shoots 69 to maintain 1-stroke lead in Germany

Posted:

MUNICH (AP) - Ernie Els shot a 3-under 69 in the second round of the BMW International Open on Friday to maintain his one-stroke lead. The South African made six birdies, a double bogey and a bogey, leaving him at 12-under 132 halfway through the European Tour event. Els, a two-time winner of the British Open and U.S. Open, opened with a 63 Thursday. There's so much golf to be played. If you fall out of the lead, if you're not leading after three rounds, it doesn't really mean much at all late Sunday, Els said. So you just want to stay in the race and keep trying to go forward. He is followed by Matthew Baldwin of England (69) and Alexander Levy of France (68). Defending champion Danny Willett of England shot a 65 for the day's best round and is tied for fourth place with Bernd Wiesberger of Austria (68).Willett was six strokes off the pace after an opening 69 and is happy he is back in contention to become the first player to defend the title in the 25th edition of the competition.Yesterday was a bit hit and miss, a little bit shaky, said Willett, whose season was disrupted by a back injury. I haven't played a lot of tournament golf in the past 14 weeks, so it was a bit rusty. And today I hit some proper golf shots again and I played really nicely.Five players 2008 winner Martin Kaymer and Marcel Siem of Germany, Tommy Fleetwood of England, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Sweden's Alex Noren are three strokes off the pace to be tied for sixth. The gap between Ernie and me, it's shrank by one. Instead of four, it's only three now, said Siem, who received great support from the appreciative crowd. The people were super cool today.Els was behind Willett and Wiesberger by the time he teed off in the afternoon. Els began with five successive pars before holing his first birdie, but ran into trouble when he found water from the tee at the par-four No. 7 and needed six shots. After four more birdies, a bogey on No. 16 looked to have cost him the lead but he finished with a simple tap-in for another birdie.I didn't feel a lot of energy today for some reason, especially on the front nine for the first 12 holes or so, Els said. I don't know, maybe it's the jet-lag or age or something. I made an absolute mess of two holes 16 was just an absolute mess and seven You take those really big mistakes away and then I had a really good round.

UN commission: Arming Syrians leads to war crimes

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Arming Syrians fighting on either side of the country's bloody conflict could lead to more war crimes, the head of the U.N. commission investigating human rights abuses in Syria warned Friday.Paulo Pinheiro stopped short of directly criticizing the United States or other nations arming Syrians, saying the commission does not comment on decisions by governments. But his remarks came about a week after President Barack Obama authorized sending weapons to rebels for the first time.It marked a major policy shift for the Obama administration, and came after the White House disclosed that the U.S. had conclusive evidence that Bashar Assad's regime had used chemical weapons against the opposition trying to overthrow him.States who provide arms have a responsibility in terms of the eventual use of these arms to commit gross human rights violations, war crimes or crimes against humanity, Pinheiro said. We are very much worried that more arms will signify an increased presence of violations and those crimes. The U.N. Commission of Inquiry earlier this month in a report to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva accused both sides of committing war crimes in Syria. About 93,000 people have been killed in Syria since the first protests began in March 2011.Crimes that shock the conscience have become reality ...We emphasize that there is a devastating human cost to the availability of weapons and that there is also a political cost, Pinheiro said. Weapons fuel the parties' illusion that they can win this war, pulling them farther into battle and away from the negotiating table. He reiterated his support for a Syria peace conference called for by Russia and the United State that would bring together rebels of the Free Syrian Army and forces of President Bashar Assad. No date for those talks has been set, but leaders at the Group of Eight who met this week in Northern Ireland all agreed talks should start soon.In its report, the commission also found there were reasonable grounds to believe that limited quantities of toxic chemicals had been used as weapons in at least four attacks in Syria's civil war, but that more evidence was needed to determine the precise chemicals agents used, or who used them. The commission said conclusive findings could only be reached by getting testing samples directly from victims of the attack, and U.N. chemical weapons experts still have not been allowed to enter Syria. Pinheiro, who briefed the U.N. Security Council on Friday, reiterated that U.N. investigators still did not have enough evidence to show the precise chemical agents being used in Syria, and who was using them.In Syria, meanwhile, rebels said they had received shipments of new weapons from Arab nations and other countries, though none yet from the U.S.

US fighter jets in Jordan to provide training

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP) - US administration officials say about a dozen US fighter jets will be flying and conducting training operations in Jordan. They will be poised to respond if needed to protect allies if the war in neighboring Syria spills over the border.Officials say the increased show of U.S. military should be seen as a signal to Syria that its 2-year-old civil war must remain contained within its borders and that the U.S. is committed to its defense relationship with Jordan. The total number of U.S. forces in Jordan will be as many as 1,000.The officials say this is not a first step toward establishing a no-fly zone around Syria. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the mission publicly.

Abbas asks Palestinian PM to rethink resignation

Posted:

RAMALLAH (AP) - Two aides say Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked his prime minister to reconsider his decision to step down after just two weeks in office. The aides say Abbas met with Rami Hamdallah on Friday, a day after Hamdallah submitted his resignation because he felt his deputy was overstepping his authority. The aides say Abbas asked Hamdallah to decide by Saturday if he is serious about resigning. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the meeting with reporters.Abbas appointed Hamdallah, a university dean and political novice, earlier this month in an apparent move to consolidate power. The pick could backfire and turn into a political distraction at a time when Abbas is focusing on a U.S. push to restart negotiations with Israel.

100,000 flee flooding in Canada

Posted:

OTTAWA (AFP) - Flooding forced the evacuation on Friday of some 100,000 people in Calgary and nearby towns in the heart of the Canadian oil patch.Schools were closed and the military sent in two helicopters and hundreds of troops to help clear as many as 24 neighborhoods as heavy rains caused the Bow and Elbow Rivers in western Canada to overflow their banks.Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi urged residents to gather their belongings and flee. He told them to expect to be away from their homes for a few days while police patrolled streets shouting evacuation orders over loudspeakers.Television footage showed swift currents carrying away cars and destroying homes in nearby towns. With more rain forecast over the weekend, water levels are expected to continue rising in the city of one million people that hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics, before cresting.Twelve communities in surrounding Alberta province meanwhile have declared a state of emergency, and mudslides forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway, isolating the mountain resort town of Banff.

Super full moon shines brightly this weekend

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A supermoon rises this weekend. The biggest and brightest full moon of the year graces the sky early Sunday as our celestial neighbor swings closer to Earth than usual. While the moon will appear 14 percent larger normal, most skywatchers won't be able to notice the difference. Still, astronomers say it's worth looking up and appreciating the cosmos. The moon will be closest and turn full around 7:30 a.m. EDT (2330 GMT), making it the best time to view.As in any supermoon event, high tides are forecast because of the moon's proximity, but the effect is expected to be small.Forget about the myths that swirl every time a supermoon appears. There's no link to higher crime or bizarre behavior. Scientists say that's just lunacy.

Father-son chicken fight in China traffic

MA'ANSHAN (Agencies) - The pair were involved in a prolonged car chase amid busy traffic on Wednesday, which ended in a crash that left both vehicles wrecked.Images from CCTV cameras showed a silver grey Mercedes Benz limousine and a red BMW sports car trying to overtake each other on a main road in Ma'anshan, in eastern China's Anhui Province. The Mercedes stopped at a crossroad at around 10.50am and then suddenly backed up and knocked into the BMW that had been keeping up.The road chase continued with the two drivers staying close to each other, taking it in turns to smash into the other.A shopkeeper who saw the incident said: I saw a red car spinning right there as if it were in a karting race. It then slammed into the ... limousine. She added that the two cars collided several times. The drama lasted about four minutes, footage showed. As the chase came to its end, the driver of the red BMW abandoned his vehicle and ran away. The Mercedes owner, not ready to give in, also got out, whipping his belt in fury and chasing after the other. The two cars, both badly damaged, were left at the site abandoned until traffic police came to tow them away.Yang Xiaoyu, a traffic police officer in Ma'anshan, said: This accident was not caused by a single collision considering that both cars show signs of multiple crashes. We have notified the local police station to take care of this case because the drivers were no longer available at the scene. The two drivers have now been tracked down and confirmed as a father and son who had fallen out. They may face charges of dangerous driving, police said.An investigation is still under way.

Oil falls as monetary policy and China hit market

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil slid again Friday on the prospect of a tighter supply of cash and slower growth in China.U.S. benchmark crude fell $1.71, to $93.69 in New York. The decline extends a sharp plunge that saw U.S. oil fall from nearly $100 per barrel in morning trading Thursday.Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refineries to make gasoline, fell $1.24 to $100.91.The average retail price of gasoline fell a penny to $3.59 per gallon according to AAA, OPIS and Wright Express. Gasoline prices have fallen slowly over the past week, but remain 12 cents higher than last year.Crude had reached its highest level of the year by Thursday with the war in Syria threatening wider violence across the Middle East, as well as expectations that the rebounding global economy would increase energy demand.Economic policies that have increased the supply of cash in the market have also made commodities such as oil attractive. But Thursday, the U.S. Federal Reserve said it could start tapering its bond purchases this year, which would reduce the amount of cash pushed into the market. That would make it more expensive for traders to invest in oil.New reports of a lending crunch in China, the world's second largest economy, and weak manufacturing data there may also ease energy demand. The sudden drop in the price of oil revealed how susceptible the oil market is to external influences outside of supply and demand. There has after all been no change in the fundamentals since the beginning of the month, Commerzbank in Frankfurt noted in in a published report.Analysts do not expect oil prices to decline much further, however. Geopolitical risks remain, and OPEC has signaled it will lower oil production in the coming months, which would reduce global supplies and prevent a further drop in prices. The geopolitical premium must not be forgotten, and may not remain muted for long, said analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Jonathan Trott hopes England's Champions Trophy final against India at Edgbaston on Sunday can lay the platform for the remainder of a successful season.Trott, third in the list of the tournament's leading run-scorers with his 209 runs behind only that of India's Shikhar Dhawan (332) and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (222), will be looking to help England to their first major one-day international title this weekend.England have been trying for nearly 40 years and 16 previous tournaments to break their duck and success on Sunday could act as a springboard for their defence of the Ashes starting next month. You always have a little cheeky sneak at the fixtures, and where the final is going to be played, and I was very excited about getting here -- and it's happened, Trott said at Edgbaston on Friday. It's been a fantastic tournament (for England), with regards to coming back from a loss against Sri Lanka. We had the high of beating Australia first up, and then the game against New Zealand -- a tight one in the end, but I thought we played really well - and to beat South Africa at The Oval (in Wednesday's semi-final was a great performance). He added: I hope we are peaking. There's obviously still a lot of cricket left this summer, and I hope it will be a great one for England.Victory over India would be an ideal start and Trott added: To walk out at Edgbaston will be extra-special.For me personally, I'm very excited. It's always fantastic for me, Ian Bell and Chris Woakes (his Warwickshire team-mates in the one-day squad) to play at Edgbaston -- representing England is always a fantastic honour. The guys are looking to seize the opportunity. They don't come around very often.
