Army men can be booked in criminal cases: AG

ISLAMABAD, July 12: Attorney General (AG) Muneer A. Malik said in the Supreme Court on Friday that in his independent opinion neither the Pakistan Army Act 1952 nor Pakistan Penal Code/Criminal Procedure Code prohibited registration of a case and initiation of a criminal proceeding against a serving army officer if he misused his authority with mala fide intent.

Citing several court verdicts, the AG argued that the protection to a serving army officer would not be there if he abused his legal authority.

SC seeks govt’s point of view on news report

ISLAMABAD, July 12: The recent appointment of Shujaat Azeem as Adviser to Prime Minister on Aviation drew the attention of the Supreme Court hearing a case relating to the delay in construction of the New Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Fatehjang, 30km southwest of Islamabad.

The matter cropped up when Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heading a three-judge bench asked the court staff to bring the July 7 edition of a newspaper which had carried a report headlined “New order for aviation causes uncertainty”.

Presidential election likely next month

ISLAMABAD, July 12: President Asif Ali Zardari may continue to hold his office till the expiry of his term on Sept 8, but his successor is likely to be elected in the first week of next month, a senior official of the Election Commission of Pakistan told Dawn on Friday.

Retired Justice Riaz Kayani, an ECP member from Punjab, said it was a requirement under Article 41 (4) of the constitution to hold presidential elections by August 8.

Lal Masjid operation Musharraf may face murder case

ISALAMABAD, July 12: Former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf may have to face another murder case as the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered police to register an FIR against him in connection with the killing of Ghazi Abdur Rasheed, former cleric of Lal Masjid, and his mother Sahiba Khatoon.

Justice Noorul Haq N. Qureshi of the IHC disposed of a petition filed by Ghazi Rasheed’s son, Haroon Rasheed, and ordered the Aabpara police to record the petitioner’s statement and register an FIR in accordance with law if there may be a cognizable offence.

Nawaz tells agencies to work in concert

ISLAMABAD, July 12: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited the Ministry of Interior on Friday to get its opinion and suggestions on the national security policy which the government intends to unveil soon.

He and members of his national security team were briefed by the ministry officials. During a question-answer session after the briefing, the prime minister asked about the ministry’s state of preparedness to effectively counter terrorism.

Police probe ‘terrorist’ blast outside UK mosque

LONDON, July 12: British police said on Friday they were treating a blast outside a mosque in central England as a terrorist incident, saying nails had reportedly been found at the scene.

The West Midlands police said they were alerted to reports of a loud bang in Tipton near Birmingham shortly after 1pm. No injuries were reported, but the immediate area was evacuated.

Rs7bn given to keep PIA afloat

ISLAMABAD, July 12: Having decided in principle to divest up to 30 per cent stakes and transfer its management, the government on Friday injected another Rs7 billion into the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) after it was informed that more than 70 per cent of its aircraft were ‘serviceable’.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar before it was cut short by the minister’s appointment with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
