Suicide bomber hits Iraqi cafe, killing 38

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a crowded coffee shop late Friday in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing at least 38 and wounding more than two dozen in the latest in a string of bloody attacks pounding Iraq since the start of the holy month of Ramadan this week.Iraq is being rocked by its deadliest and most sustained wave of bloodshed in half a decade. More than 2,600 people have been killed since the start of April, raising fears that the country is once again edging toward the brink of civil war a decade after Saddam Hussein was toppled in the U.S.-led invasion.Another suicide bomber and a shooting elsewhere in the country killed five members of the security forces, bringing Friday's toll to 43.The late-night blast ripped through the Classico Cafe in Kirkuk, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, as patrons were enjoying tea and water pipes hours after the sunset meal that breaks the daylong Ramadan fast, police officials said. The city is a flashpoint for ethnic tensions, with its mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen holding competing claims to claims for control of the oil-rich area. The Kurds want to incorporate it into their self-ruled region in Iraq's north, but Arabs and Turkomen are opposed. There has been no claim of responsibility for the Kirkuk blast or other attacks in recent days. But Sunni extremists, including al-Qaida's Iraq branch, frequently targets Shiites, security forces and civil servants in an effort to undermine the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. They also are believed to be behind frequent attacks in a band of disputed territories around Kirkuk aimed at heightening ethnic tensions in the area. The cafe attack wounded 26, police and hospital officials said. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to journalists.Hours before the Kirkuk attack, Sunni cleric Salah al-Nuaimi urged calm among Iraqis during a joint Sunni-Shiite sermon Friday in Baghdad aimed at easing sectarian tensions.Enough is enough, al-Nuaimi told worshippers at a Baghdad mosque. We all love Iraq, we are all Iraqis and we want to be united. We want to stop the bloodletting, and develop and build Iraq.Earlier in the day, a suicide car bomber struck a police patrol outside the northern city of Mosul, killing four policemen, a police officer and a medical official said. Mosul is 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of the Iraqi capital. And outside the northern city of Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, drive-by shooters armed with pistols fitted with silencers killed a senior police officer. The attack took place in the town Shirqat, a police officer said.Officials also provided details of new attacks on Iraqi Shiites late the previous night. In one of the attacks on Shiites, a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden motorcycle into a funeral tent for a Shiite family in the town of in Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad, officials said. The late Thursday evening explosion killed 13 people and wounded 24, the officials said.In the northern town of Dujail, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Baghdad, a parked car bomb went off outside a Shiite mosque late on Thursday. As people gathered around the blast site, another bomb went off. That twin bombing killed at least 11 people and wounded 25, mayor Nayif al-Khazrachi said. Two medical officials, who weren't authorized to speak publicly, confirmed the casualty figures. The two attacks raised the overall death toll Thursday from a series of attacks, which included assaults on police stations in the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah west of Baghdad, to 40.On Wednesday, gunmen launched an assault on an army checkpoint and special oil industry police assigned to protect a nearby pipeline in the western Iraqi desert, killing at least 14 troops there.

BEIJING (AFP) - Torrential rain and landslides in China have left more than 200 people dead or missing in recent days, state media and the government said as the country braced Friday for an approaching typhoon.Landslides and floods in Sichuan province in the southwest had killed 31 people by Thursday, according to data from the ministry of civil affairs, with 166 more missing. More than two million people had been affected in the region, it added.Another 13 people had died, with four missing, since Sunday in Yan'an in the northwest, where local authorities warned of a high risk of flooding and landslides, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.Official figures also showed deaths in several other parts of the country, from the central provinces of Henan and Hubei to the northern region of Ningxia. The government raised the flood alert status on the Yangtze river, warning of potential downpours and windstorms in the waterway's middle and lower reaches Saturday as Typhoon Soulik moves towards the Chinese coast, reported news portal people.com.cn.President Xi Jinping has called on the authorities to spare no efforts in searching for people left missing in the landslides, according to a statement sent by the General Office of the Communist Party of China to Xinhua.

Virus-hit Saudi Arabia asks pilgrims to wear masks

RIYADH (AP) - Saudi Arabia, the epicenter of a new respiratory virus, asked Friday that pilgrims coming from across the Muslim world to visit its holy sites wear face masks in crowded places. The list of Health Ministry recommendations carried by the Saudi Press Agency also advised the elderly, or those with chronic diseases, to postpone their pilgrimage. The main pilgrimage season comes later this year but hundreds of thousands also visit the kingdom during the holy month of Ramadan, which began this week.Saudi Arabia announced two deaths on Sunday, bringing to 38 the number of deadly cases in the kingdom. The new virus is related to SARS, which killed some 800 people in a global outbreak in 2003. It belongs to a family of viruses that most often cause the common cold.

UK police investigate explosion near mosque

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - An explosion near a mosque in central England is being treated as suspected terrorism, British police said Friday. No injuries were reported in the blast, which comes in the wake of heightened religious tensions in the U.K. over the killing of a British soldier.Residents in the town of Tipton reported hearing a loud bang and finding nails near the Kanz-ul-Iman Muslim Welfare Association Central Jamia mosque, according to West Midlands Police. The blast, which occurred around 1 p.m. local time, appeared to have happened shortly before Friday prayers were expected to begin. The area around the mosque was evacuated as a precaution. We express our deep shock and utter dismay regarding the incident that has occurred this afternoon. We jointly on behalf of the local community condemn this senseless and mindless act, officials at the mosque said in a statement. The incident came the same day as the funeral of soldier Lee Rigby, who was killed in broad daylight by alleged Islamic extremists on a London street. That attack in May triggered a spike in religious tensions, and police have reported an increase in attacks against mosques and Muslim community centers in the subsequent weeks.Last month, a home-made explosive device was found near a mosque in Walsall, not far from Tipton. Police are still investigating that incident, which did not cause injuries but forced the evacuation of some 150 people from their homes.

Motorcycling: Lorenzo out of German GP after new crash

Posted:

SACHSENRING (AFP) - Spain's Jorge Lorenzo has been ruled out of this weekend's German Grand Prix at Sachsenring after a fall during Friday's practice -- just two weeks after he fractured his collarbone. The reigning world MotoGP champion, who needed surgery after breaking his left collarbone during practice for the Dutch GP two weeks ago, fell again on the second Sachsenring practice session, landing on the damaged area.According to race organisers, the titanium plate, fixed with eight screws that was fitted after the Assen crash, was bent, causing him intense pain, although the pins remained in place. As a result, the decision was made to withdraw him from Sunday's race and Lorenzo flew home to Barcelona on Friday to undergo surgery on Saturday.I have decided to go home and recover after today's crash at Sachsenring. I prefer to focus on surgery to fix the plate that was unfortunately bent during the crash, said the Spaniard. I will try to recover and be back as soon as possible.Even though he got up quickly after leaving the track on the fourth lap, Lorenzo was seen holding his shoulder and an ice pack before getting in a car bound for the circuit's medical centre. The incident came as Germany's Stefan Bradl was quickest in the second session in front of his home crowd, clocking 1min 22.030sec, 0.017sec ahead of Lorenzo. The Spaniard had recorded the quickest time of 1min 22.47sec on Friday morning. The 26-year-old finished fifth in the Dutch GP on June 26 and earlier on Friday had revealed that he rode the Dutch GP against medical advice. In the Netherlands, I had a lot of pain throughout the race. I admit that I was afraid. But I managed to get fifth place and only concede two points (to Pedrosa), he told reporters. That was the most important thing.Doctors had initially prescribed four weeks' rest for Lorenzo, given his injuries after the 200 kilometres (124 miles) per hour crash during practice at Assen. But they did not count on the defending champion's will to compete, just 36 hours after a two-hour operation in Barcelona under general anaesthetic to repin his shattered left collarbone with a titanium plate and eight screws.Doctors admitted they had a nervous wait as the race took place, with a bone fragment from the complex fracture near an artery providing particular concern.Doctor Joaquin Rodriguez said on Friday: This type of fracture can cause serious damage to the blood vessels under the collarbone. We tried to stop him racing but he's stubborn. We then gave him a list of movements that he couldn't do under any circumstances. In particular we explained the signs which we would raise to force him to stop racing immediately. It (the race) was difficult to watch. My colleagues and I were very worried. Jorge gave us a lesson in physical and mental strength to go through the pain barrier.Given Rodriguez's medical assessment, many observers have asked how race doctors gave Lorenzo the all-clear to race. But two race doctors at Assen told AFP that the rider had successfully passed a series of tests that were more demanding than the movements he had to make during the grand prix itself. At Sachsenring, Lorenzo had been dubbed Kaizer Jorge (Emperor Jorge), a reference to Germany football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who finished the 1970 World Cup semi-final against Italy with his arm in a sling and a broken collarbone.

Mark Cavendish wins eventful stage 13 of Tour

Posted:

SAINT-AMAND-MONTROND (AP) - Mark Cavendish won the 13th stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish Friday and Chris Froome lost a sizeable chunk of his overall lead after being caught out by an attack from rival Alberto Contador.Cavendish moved ahead with about 100 meters to go and rival Peter Sagan, who leads the contest for the best sprinter's green jersey, was unable to stay with him.It was the British sprinter's second stage win of this year's Tour and 25th overall moving him level in third place with Frenchman Andre Leducq on the all-time list.My team did an incredible job today, Cavendish said. We're going to have some Champagne tonight. His relief was clear to see as he rushed into the arms of teammate Sylvain Chavanel after the stage. On Thursday his teammates had put him into a great position to attack but he was beaten to the line by Marcel Kittel of Germany.Yesterday they gave everything and I let them down, Cavendish said. The Tour de France is the most incredible race in the world. It means so much to me. When I think about it, it makes me want to cry.Flat stages are normally relatively free of incident, but the 173-kilometer (107.5-mile) trek from Tours, which is surrounded by the Loire river, to Saint-Amand-Montrond in central France was exciting and showed that even Froome's formidable Sky team can be vulnerable. There's no such thing as a calm stage on the Tour de France, Froome said. Having lost a minute there, that's always a bitter pill to swallow because we've worked really hard already to get the advantage we had. With about a third of the stage gone, the main pack was split into three and Alejandro Valverde dropped way out of overall contention after stopping to repair a puncture that cost him a huge amount of time and put him outside the top 10.Valverde was second overnight but that spot was overtaken by Dutchman Bauke Mollema, while the two-time former champion Contador improved to third. They both gained 1 minute, 9 seconds on Froome. That means Mollema is 2:28 behind and Contador is 2:45 adrift. It doesn't surprise me what happened today. Just a reminder that I need to stay awake at all times in this race, Froome said. That's what's going to make it an exciting race. We're up for it, we're going to try.Aside from Cavendish, Contador was the big winner of the stage after he was battered by Froome in the Pyrenees mountains and then lost more time to him in the time trial. Friday's performance should be a big boost for the Spaniard going into a tough mountain stage on Sunday and then three grueling Alpine stages to follow after that. Given that Froome finished all alone and without any Sky teammates on a flat stage, it suggests he could be in serious trouble in the mountains if he's isolated by an attack from Contador. The Sky team is down to seven riders after Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen had to pull out after fracturing his right shoulder in a crash involving about 20 riders near the end of Thursday's stage. Of the remaining seven, Geraint Thomas is riding with a fractured pelvis. The peloton was split in three after an attack from Cavendish's Omega Pharma QuickStep team, with Tony Martin leading the charge. Froome made sure he stayed with the small group forming at the front as it pulled away from the two groups behind. The reason for Omega's attack was to try and shake off Kittel who has won three sprint stages so far and it worked to perfection. They rode themselves into the ground, Cavendish said. It wasn't really a master plan, we just felt the wind wasn't in the right position so we decided to ride harder, to make the peloton more tired and finally it broke. With so many riders pedaling hard behind them, there was no way the early six-man breakaway would last and they were swallowed up with about 100 kilometers (60 miles) left. No breakaway has gone all the way on this year's Tour because the peloton has ridden so aggressively. Then, Valverde had to leave the yellow jersey group to mend his bike. That meant his Movistar teammates also had to drop off the main group to go back and help him with nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) of grueling riding ahead. With Valverde left behind, the Belkin team showed no mercy, profiting from his delay to push Mollema and countryman Laurens Ten Dam, who is now fifth, up the overall standings.Belkin pushed so hard at the front that Richie Porte, Froome's strongest teammate at Sky, was dropped.By the end, Froome was all alone and his team has reason for concern with the mountains approaching.

Astronomers find blue planet outside solar system

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Astronomers have for the first time managed to determine the color of a planet outside our solar system, a blue gas giant 63 light-years away.Using the Hubble Space Telescope, an international team said the planet known as HD 189733B would look like a deep blue dot if viewed up close.Measuring the planets color is a real first we have never managed it before with a planet outside our own solar system, Frederic Pont of the University of Exeter in England said Friday. While Earth looks blue from space because of its oceans, the astronomers said the planets color was created by a hazy turbulent atmosphere of silicate particles that scatter blue light. To determine the planets color, the team measured the amount of light reflected off its surface as it passed behind its star.Discovered in 2005, the planet belongs to a class of giant gas planets called hot Jupiters that orbit close to their stars. It has a daytime temperature of around 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,832 F), and the heat causes rocks to evaporate and glass to possibly rain sideways in howling 4,500 mph (about 7,250 kph) winds.Astronomers chose the planet for observation because of its proximity to Earth and size in relation to the star it orbits. A light-year is nearly 6 trillion miles.Pont said the technology the astronomers used pushed the Hubble telescope to its limit given the distance and light from other stars obscuring their view.People keep coming up with a better way of viewing planets indirectly so Im sure the technology will eventually improve, Pont said.

Oil rises near $106 on supply concerns

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil rose to near $106 a barrel Friday, supported by continuing tensions in Egypt and a sharp drop of U.S. crude stockpiles.Benchmark crude oil for August delivery gained $1.04 to $105.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Even with a drop of $1.60 a barrel Thursday, the price of oil rose $2.73 this week and is up nearly 10 percent in July.Oil has risen from around $97 on July 1, mainly for two reasons. Traders are concerned that unrest in Egypt could affect oil shipments through the Suez Canal, a key shipping lane. And U.S. supplies of oil and gasoline have dropped dramatically in the past two weeks, signaling a rise in demand in the world's largest economy.Brent crude gained $1.08 to $108.81 on the ICE Futures exchange in London. In other energy futures trading on Nymex:Gasoline futures rose 10 cents, or 3.2 percent, to $3.12 a gallon, and have risen about 37 cents in July. Natural gas added 3 cents to $3.64 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil advanced 3 cents to $3.03 a gallon.

Broad escape angers Australia

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Australia were left fuming as England's Stuart Broad enjoyed a massive slice of luck on the third day of the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge on Friday.Broad, on his Nottinghamshire home ground, had made 37, with England then 297 for seven in their second innings, when he edged teenage debutant spinner Ashton Agar. The ball clipped wicketkeeper Brad Haddin's gloves and then flew to Australia captain Michael Clarke at first slip.Australia appealed for the catch but leading Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar ruled in the batsman's favour as Broad stood his ground. The tourists couldn't believe the verdict but ultimately, as they'd already used up both their two permitted reviews in the innings, they had to accept it.Australia coach Darren Lehmann's anger on the dressing room balcony was clearly visible after television replays showed Broad had got a thick edge, although it's possible Dar's view was obscured by Haddin's gloves. At stumps on the third day, England were 230 for six in their second innings, a potentially decisive lead of 261 runs, with Broad (47 not out) having helped Ian Bell (95 not out) add an unbroken 108 for the seventh wicket.Every single batsman who plays cricket, no matter who you play for, has the right to wait for the umpire's decision, said England batsman Kevin Pietersen after stumps. We play hard and we play very, very fair and every single batsman has the right to wait for the umpire. Aleem Dar is a fantastic umpire and we respect his decisions. We want to worry about what goes forward and we've got a Test match to win tomorrow (Saturday). But Australia great Shane Warne, who captained Pietersen at Hampshire, slammed Dar's ruling and said it was just the latest in a line of crunch calls the official had got wrong. He always gets the crucial decisions wrong & always has, that's why he's not a great umpire, Warne told his Twitter followers. We all make mistakes & it's a very tough job being an umpire, but when Dar continually makes crucial mistakes why does he keep getting a gig?Former England captain Michael Vaughan, who played alongside Lehmann at Yorkshire, sympathised with Australia. The review system was brought in to get rid of the howler, I don't see why umpire Dar couldn't have had someone in his ear saying you've got that one wrong let's just overturn that quickly, said Vaughan, now working as a commentator for BBC Radio's Test Match Special. This has been a terrific game but I think a lot will be talked about that incident, which is sad.Earlier on Friday, Australia ran out of reviews when they decided to challenge a not out verdict following James Pattinson's hugely optimistic lbw appeal against Jonny Bairstow, which replays showed was missing leg stump. And Glenn McGrath, a team-mate of Warne's in the all-conquering Australia sides of the 1990s and early 2000s, said Clarke's men had to follow England captain Alastair Cook's example when it came to using the Decision Review System.DRS was brought in to correct obviously wrong decisions and that is how captains should use it. Alastair Cook does just that, he is very sparing with it, and hopefully Michael Clarke does the same after this, said fast bowling great McGrath.'Walking', the practice whereby batsmen gave themselves out without waiting for the umpire's decision, was once a long-established tradition in English county cricket and 'non-walkers' were considered unsporting. However, the custom in Australian cricket, from even as far back as batting great Don Bradman's time, has been to wait for the umpire's verdict.Clarke himself didn't 'walk' when during the second Ashes Test at Adelaide in the 2010/11 he got an inside edge onto his pad off part-time spinner Pietersen and was caught at short leg. England had to seek a review before Clarke was given out. Despite former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who retired from international duty in 2008, being a noted 'walker', few other modern players have copied his lead, particularly now that decisions can be challenged by recourse to technology.

Bell, Broad turn tide for England versus Australia

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) - England took control of the opening Ashes test on Friday after a wicket-less evening session for Australia on the third day, reaching 326-6 for a lead of 261 runs.Ian Bell was 95 not out from 228 balls with 12 fours and his unbroken partnership of 108 with Stuart Broad has transformed the test at Trent Bridge.Broad made a controversial 47 not out from 122 balls, which included five fours but only after he was given not out despite clearly edging Ashton Agar to Michael Clarke at slip a decision Australia was unable to overturn having wasted its referrals. While reporters and pundits questioned Broad's decision to play on, Australia's Peter Siddle tried to play down the situation. How many people have ever walked? Siddle said. It's the umpire's decision, you just take it. You finish the over and go to the next over. If you'd watched it out there we didn't make a big thing of it.A prickly Kevin Pietersen defended his team's and the umpire's honor. We play hard, we play fair, he said. Each individual player in the middle has the responsibilty to wait for the umpire's decision. Aleem Dar is fantastic umpire.Mitchell Starc had the best bowling figures with 2-66 for Australia, which had been on top for the first two sessions until Bell's discipline and Broad's brinkmanship turned the contest back in England's favor. The hosts began the third day on 80-2, and after two days of unrelenting drama the first hour was comparatively slow.Pietersen (64) brought up his 50 with a drive off Starc in the 50th over, and Cook whipped Agar through midwicket to bring up the century partnership in the 54th. But there were few chances until Pietersen dragged Pattinson onto his stumps on the final ball before the drinks break three overs later with 121 on the board.Cook reached his 50, from 164 balls, with a single from Agar, but the 19-year-old Australian removed him in the 60th with an off break that Clarke took high over his head to leave the total on 131-4.The dismissals slowed an already pedestrian run rate, best exemplified by Shane Watson bowling 34 balls before England managed a scoring shot against him.Australia used its final referral in the 69th over, claiming an lbw decision against Bairstow from a ball that was drifting considerably down leg side and this wastefulness would return to haunt them.Bell was given lbw to Watson in the 79th over but he successfully referred the decision, to raucous cheers from the crowd when a replay showed the ball was missing leg stump.By this stage, every single was being cheered, but in the next over, Agar had Bairstow caught behind.Matt Prior looked well set until he was caught by Ed Cowan trying to pull Siddle through midwicket, ending a useful stand of 44.Bell reached his 50 with two runs off Pattinson, and he scored his 6,000th test run shortly before tea.Broad rode his luck throughout the evening session. He might have been given out lbw to Agar had Australia not used up its reviews and his knock included an all-run four, but he also produced a classy cover drive off Starc to bring up the 50 partnership and a driven four from Pattinson as Australia's frustration mounted.Cowan missed a difficult chance to catch Broad, who was on 37, at short leg off Agar and in the 118th over he was caught by Clarke at slip only to be given not out by Aleem Dar, despite Australia's protests. In the 129th Broad cut Watson through point to bring up the hundred partnership and take England's lead past 250.As Australian tempers boiled over Pattinson was given a verbal warning by umpire Kumar Dharmasena for an excessive appeal after Bell was correctly given not out lbw in the next over and England ends day three in a far better position than looked likely at tea.I'd be foolish to say we've got enough, Pietersen said. Cricket's a funny game, but in our dressing room we'd rather be 261 ahead.Siddle admitted it had been a long day but was still optimistic.I think we're still in a very good position, he said. Tomorrow we're going to be fresh and ready to go. The first hour's going to be crucial. It's a beautiful wicket to bat on now so we've got to get those four wickets and give ourselves a chance.
