Senators assail govt over price hike

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: Opposition senators on Wednesday held the government’s poor economic policy responsible for the current wave of unprecedented price hike in the country, alleging that rulers were busy in providing relief only to capitalists and the corrupt.

US halts cargo movement via Torkham

WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The US military has halted the shipment of its retrograde cargo from Afghanistan through Pakistan because of protests over drone strikes, a Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday.

He said the protests put at risk the drivers of the trucks carrying the equipment but indicated that the shipments could be resumed “in the near future”.

PM’s advisers divided over Nadra sacking

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: After the Islamabad High Court reinstated Nadra chairman Tariq Malik within hours of his sacking by the government, close advisers of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are divided over ways of handling the emerging situation.

Most of them want the government to stand by the decision and forcefully contest the case in the court.

Chaudhry to be new foreign secretary

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The government reversed on Wednesday its earlier decision about appointment of next foreign secretary and picked Aizaz Chaudhry as successor to outgoing secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, who is moving to Washington as ambassador to the United States.

Ambassador Abdul Basit, currently posted in Germany, had previously been named as the next foreign secretary.

SC scraps LPG extraction plant licence

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The Supreme Court held on Wednesday that the 2003 LPG extraction plant licence issued to Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited (JJVL) was non-transparent, tainted from its very inception and geared towards advancing benefits and unfair advantage to the joint venture.

“Thus it is clear that the implementation agreement (IA) was entered into in a non-transparent and highly questionable manner, resulting in undue benefit to JJVL and very heavy losses to state enterprise SSGCL and consequently to the people of Pakistan,” said a 23-page verdict authored by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja.

$10.7 billion reimbursed by US, Senate told

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar informed the Senate on Wednesday that the US government had reimbursed up to October this year a total of $10.775 billion on account of war on terrorism.

The written information was placed before the house in response to a question by Karim Ahmed Khwaja of Peoples Party.

Two unopposed LG winners kidnapped

QUETTA, Dec 4: As Balochistan prepares for the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, a vehicle of security forces was attacked in Khuzdar and two candidates elected unopposed were kidnapped in Turbat on Wednesday.

Official sources said two gunmen opened fire on the vehicle of the Frontier Corps in Pindran area of Khuzdar. FC personnel returned fire, killed one of the assailants and injured the other who was arrested.

3 Uch plant workers kidnapped

QUETTA: Three employees of Uch power plant were kidnapped while going to Dera Murad Jamali in a passenger van on Wednesday.

“Our three employees who were going from Sukkur to Dera Murad Jamali are missing and have not reported for duty,” Naeem Ahmed, an official of the plant, said.

Objection against Musharraf trial court rejected

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected on Wednesday a petition against the formation of a special court for the treason trial of former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf.

The petition filed by a local lawyer challenged the process of selection of the judges and the subsequent notification about formation of the special court issued by the law ministry on Nov 20.

Mortars fired from Iran land in Mashkel

QUETTA, Dec 4: Several mortars fired from across the Iranian border landed and exploded in the Mashkel area of Washuk district of Balochistan.

Official sources confirmed the shelling and said the Iranian forces suddenly fired mortars from their border area.

Murree Brewery seeks partner in India

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The premier spirit maker of the country is looking for a partner in India to sell its malt beverage in the neighbouring country and harness international exports from there, as export of alcoholic drinks from Pakistan is banned.

“We gave a franchise to a company over a year ago but that deal has not really materialised so far,” Sabihur Rehman, special assistant to the chief executive of the Murree Brewery Company, said.
