Nadra chief accused of insubordination

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: The National Assembly made a hot start to its winter session on Thursday, with opposition parties taking the government on frontally over its sacking of the Nadra chief. They said the dismissal had strengthened their suspicions about rigging in the May 11 election.

‘Good news’ today, Asif assures SC

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: A promise of ‘good news’ on Friday saved the day for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in the Supreme Court on Thursday.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry which had taken up the emotive issue of enforced disappearances was about to dictate an order which could entail the summoning of the chief executive of the country but deferred the proceedings for one more day when suddenly in the middle of the hearing the defence minister sought permission to receive a call from the prime minister.

Imran warns against misadventure by centre

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan warned on Thursday that there would be no government at the centre in the event of any misadventure against his party’s government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing his supporters at a sit-in organised by the KP cabinet in the D-Chowk in front of the Parliament House, he said blocking Nato supplies was not a violation of the national foreign policy.

MQM leader goes missing

KARACHI, Dec 5: Osama Qadri, a former member of the Sindh Assembly and nazim of a Karachi town, mysteriously disappeared on Thursday night from a posh city area.

Mr Qadri belongs to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) which alleged that he had been kidnapped.

Five militants, FC soldier die in clash

QUETTA, Dec 5: Five militants and a soldier of Frontier Corps were killed in a gunbattle in the Pat Feeder Canal area of Nasirabad district on Thursday, official sources said. The fighting left an FC man injured.

They said the FC personnel had launched a search operation in the RD-238 Pat Feeder Canal area for militants involved in attacks on security forces.

Action ordered against Ashraf

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: More troubles sprang up for former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Thursday as the Supreme Court declared illegal Rs52 billion development funds he had allocated during his nine-month tenure as premier and ordered action against him and all others responsible for it.

In its verdict, the court said that Rs47bn, out of the total allocation of Rs52bn, was utilised illegally in Raja Ashraf’s native town of Gujar Khan.

Official faces tough time in Senate committee over Malik’s sacking

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: The government conceded on Thursday that Nadra chairman Tariq Malik had been sacked without a show-cause notice having been giving to him, but insisted that the decision was in line with terms and conditions of his contract.

Interior Ministry’s Additional Secretary Athar Sial told the Senate’s Standing Committee on Interior that the contract could be ended by either side after giving a one-month notice or paying one month’s salary.

Chief justice has been inconsistent, says ICJ

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: The chief justice of Pakistan has strengthened human rights but his inconsistent choice of cases has left the Supreme Court vulnerable to accusations of partisan intervention, a global group of 60 eminent judges and lawyers said on Thursday.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry — due to step down on Dec 12 — spearheaded a legal movement that forced out a dictator and established the independence of the judiciary for the first time in Pakistan’s history.

Rabbani and Zahid receive threatening letters

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Two key opposition members — PPP’s Raza Rabbani and ANP’s Zahid Khan — informed the Senate on Thursday that they had received handwritten anonymous letters threatening them for their stance on the trial of former dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf under Article 6.

Chairman Nayyar Bokhari expressed concern over the incident and directed Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq to take up the matter with the prime minister and report progress to the house by Dec 11.

Pakistan believes in talks on Kashmir: FO

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Pakistan believes in engagement and dialogue with India, and not war, for resolution of outstanding disputes, including Kashmir, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

“We believe that the Kashmir issue should be resolved peacefully through talks based on UN Security Council resolutions. We have always urged the Indian government to engage with us in meaningful and substantive talks to resolve this longstanding dispute,” Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said at the weekly media briefing.
