SC orders arrests in ‘honour’ killing case

KARACHI: The Supreme Court directed the police on Friday to arrest all those involved in the “honour” killing of two girls in Shikarpur. A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, was seized with the suo motu proceedings against a jirga that was held for settling a dispute over honour killings.

Govt, Taliban committees meet today

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has convened a meeting of the committees representing the government and Taliban on Saturday (today).

The meeting, according to official sources, is expected to finalise the date and venue for the next phase of peace talks.

35 missing: FIR lodged against petty officers

ISLAMABAD: An FIR has finally been registered against some petty military officers at the Malakand police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on behalf of Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif.

KP Advocate General Abdul Latif Yousufzai informed a three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja on Friday about the development and submitted a copy of the FIR.

Loadshedding of gas to be reduced in Punjab, Sindh

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to restore daily gas supplies of eight hours a day to (CNG) outlets in Punjab and reduce gas loadshedding in Sindh from three to one day a week.

An agreement to this effect was reached on Friday between a government team headed by Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and a delegation of CNG operators on Friday. The fresh arrangement will come into force by the end of next week.

NTDC blamed for transmission line delay

LAHORE: Holding the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) responsible for the inordinate delay in construction of the transmission line of the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project between 2007 and 2013, an inquiry committee formed by the prime minister has recommended action against seven managing directors for “wilful neglect and complete disregard of the strategic importance of the project”.

The four-member committee constituted by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to “identify the causes of delay, planning errors, fix responsibility and suggest a way forward for fast track completion of the project” held that the “NTDC wilfully neglected the project and should be held accountable”.

President Gul backs Turks in defying govt ban on Twitter

ANKARA: Turkish Twitter users — led by the country’s president — on Friday defied a government ban on the social networking site as world leaders condemned the move and opposition leaders vowed to challenge it in court.

The popular micro-blogging site, one of several that have been used to publish allegations of corruption in Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s inner circle, went dark in Turkey late on Thursday.

Man recalls harrowing experience of meeting with son-in-law

ISLAMABAD: What the father-in-law of detained Tasif Ali told the Supreme Court on Friday about a meeting with him sounded more of a harrowing tale than a joyous reunion.

“I regretted meeting my son-in-law and felt as if I would suffer brain haemorrhage. He seems crippled,” remarked Dr Mohammad Aslam with tears in his eyes while talking to reporters after attending the hearing.

UN blames health, nutrition issues for Tharparkar deaths

ISLAMABAD: The main cause of recent deaths in Tharparkar district is a surge in morbidity and mortality rates among children and adults rather than drought in the area, according to UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Timo Pakkala.

In a statement on Friday, Mr Pakkala termed the nutrition crisis in Pakistan ‘a silent emergency’ and called for urgent attention and investment. “The situation is bound to recur, unless root causes are addressed,” he warned.
