NEW YORK (AFP) - Selfie, hashtag, and tweep are among more than 150 new words added to Americas best-selling Merriam-Webster dictionary, spotlighting the growing influence of technology on everyday life.So many of these new words show the impact of online connectivity to our lives and livelihoods, said Peter Sokolowski, editor-at-large for Merriam-Webster.Tweep, selfie, and hashtag refer to the ways we communicate and share as individuals, he added.Originally a social media buzzword, selfie was admitted to the online version of the Oxford English dictionary in 2013, which named it word of the year.Merriam-Webster defined selfie as an image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks.Crowdfunding, big data and gamification, were also added, showing how technology is being used to understand and motivate behavior, the dictionary said.Another newbie was catfish, defined as a person who sets up a false social networking profile for deceptive purposes.

Dutch seize $23mln worth of heroin in Iran raisin container

Posted:

THE HAGUE (AFP) - Dutch police have found three-quarters of a tonne of heroin stashed in a raisin-filled container from Iran, one of their biggest hauls yet, public prosecutors said on Monday. The container carrying 764 kilos (1,680 pounds) of heroin valued at around 17 million euros ($23 million) was spotted by customs officials in the Rotterdam port a week ago, prosecutors said in a statement.Police followed the container to the small village of Hagestein, around 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of Rotterdam, and swooped on Thursday, arresting two men aged 69 and 33 as they were unloading the cargo of raisins. The unnamed 69-year-old appeared on drug smuggling charges in a Rotterdam court on Monday. He was remanded in custody for two weeks, prosecution spokesman Wim de Bruin told AFP.The 33-year-old has been released pending an investigation. This is certainly one of the biggest hauls seized so far, De Bruin said.

Uganda jails nurse for 'transmitting' HIV

Posted:

KAMPALA (AFP) - A court in Uganda on Monday jailed a HIV-infected nurse for three years for criminal negligence, after she inserted a needle into a two-year-old child after first pricking herself.Rosemary Namubiru, 64, was arrested in January and her case has been sharply divisive -- with some newspapers branding her the killer nurse and accusing her of knowingly trying to infect the patient -- but HIV/AIDS activists asserting she is an victim of growing stigmatisation.Initially charged with attempted murder, Namubiru was finally convicted of professional negligence under a section of the Ugandan law covering any deliberate act likely to spread infectious diseases. What happened is that she was trying to put a canulla (needle and tube) on the baby, but he was moving a lot and she pricked herself. Once the baby calmed down, she still went on and used the same canulla, explained Stella Kentutsi, head of the National Forum of People Living with HIV/AIDS Networks in Uganda and a supporter of the nurse. She also condemned what she said was hype and misinformation from the media surrounding the trial. The child has not tested positive for HIV, although officials have said it may be too early to tell. The case comes a week after the Ugandan parliament passed a new legislation that criminalises the deliberate transmission of HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, a move that MPs have argued is necessary to halt a rise in infections.Rights groups, however, argue the new law will only further stigmatise those living with HIV and dissuade people from getting tested.Uganda was once heralded as a success story in the fight against HIV, with President Yoweri Museveni being among the first African leaders to speak openly about AIDS and the government mounting a highly successful public awareness campaign in the late 1980s and 1990s.Infection rates initially dropped from double to single digits, but according to the most recent statistics, from 2011, the national prevalence rate rose to 7.3 percent from 6.4 percent in 2004-05 -- with health officials blaming increased complacency.

European stocks close mixed as AstraZeneca rejects bid

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - European equities closed mixed Monday, with London hit after AstraZeneca rejected Pfizers final takeover bid, while Frankfurt and Paris rose.Londons FTSE 100 index of top companies gave up 0.16 percent to close lower at 6,844.55 points.Frankfurts Dax 30 however gained 0.31 percent to 9,659.39 points, while the CAC 40 in Paris ended the day up 0.3 percent at 4,469.76 points, compared with Fridays closing values.Italian stocks however plunged more than 3.0 percent at one stage, with banks leading a slump that was mainly owing to technical reasons related to dividend pay-outs.Traders said the market was hit also by last weeks weaker-than-expected first-quarter eurozone economic growth data, bond market pressures and uncertainty before European parliamentary elections.Milans FTSE Mib index later closed at 20,319 points, down 1.60 percent. The euro edged up against the dollar, with dealers saying that traders were on the sidelines in the absence of big economic indicators. In London, British drugmaker AstraZeneca topped the fallers board. The groups shares tumbled by up to 15 percent after the company rejected Pfizers improved $117-billion (85-billion-euro) bid pitched at 55 per share. The announcement appeared to put an end to the long-running sagaafter Pfizer described its latest bid as its final bid on Sunday. The biggest story on Monday is without doubt AstraZenecas decision to reject Pfizers final offer to buy the company, after it valued the companys shares at 55 each, around 3 short of what the board would consider, said analyst Craig Erlam at Alpari traders.Clearly, with Pfizer labelling this their final offer for the company, the deal now appears to be dead in the water and AstraZeneca shares are suffering as a result. The stock later pulled back slightly to stand at 42.98, down 10.89 percent from Fridays close.Erlam added that downbeat Chinese economic data was also hitting Londons mining sector, because China is a top consumer of metals. Also weighing on the FTSE ... are the miners after more disappointing data from China over the weekend added to concerns that the country cannot achieve its ambitious 7.5-percent growth target, he said.On Wall Street, indices were positive, with the Dow Jones index slightly up 0.15 percent and the Nasdaq gaining 0.76 percent.- Huge ATandT, DirectTV deal -Germanys biggest lender Deutsche Bank meanwhile bucked the trend in Frankfurt, closing down 1.76 percent at 30.20 euros, after it announced a capital hike of 8.0 billion euros. The move, which is the second biggest recapitalisation in its history, sees Deutsche Bank turn to the Qatari royal family for a portion of the new funds.Investor sentiment however was not boosted by a huge takeover deal in the telecommunications sector.US telecoms giant ATandT clinched a deal on Sunday to acquire broadcast satellite service provider DirecTV for nearly $50 billion, the latest in a string of pay TV consolidation moves.A merger between the two companies would create a potent rival to cable TV giant Comcast, which hopes to expand its coverage with the pending takeover of Time Warner Cable. The European single currency rose to $1.3716 from $1.3695 late in New York on Friday. The euro fell to 138.90 yen, having fallen earlier to 138.67, the lowest level since the beginning of February, from 139.08 late on Friday. The dollar also fell to 101.27 yen, having reached 101.10 earlier and the lowest level for three and a half months, from 101.54 on Friday.Sterling steadied at 81.55 pence to the euro, and rose to $1.6822.The yuan was at 6.2373 to the dollar from 6.2334.The price of gold advanced to $1,299.40 an ounce on the London Bullion Market from $1,291.50 on Friday.

No evidence of Russian withdrawal from Ukraine borders: US

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Monday demanded firm evidence that Russia was withdrawing its forces from the borders of Ukraine, saying it had so far seen no sign of such a redeployment.US officials said a withdrawal, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, would be welcome if it occurred, but expressed skepticism that it was underway.Russia said that it had ordered the end of military exercises near its border with Ukraine, days ahead of a crucial presidential vote aimed at bringing the country out of crisis. In a move that could ease tensions, Putins office said he had ordered thousands of Russian troops deployed in border regions to return to barracks after the end of spring exercises.A senior US official insisted that the troops had never been conducting exercises near the border.Theyve been up (on) the border in a menacing posture, he said, and cautioned that so far we havent seen evidence of them withdrawing.Well want to see clear, firm evidence of this move before we make any judgment, the official said.White House spokesman Jay Carney said at this point the administration saw no evidence of any movement, which has been the case several times before. We would know and would be able to confirm for you if the Russian military had moved back, Carney told reporters, in an apparent reference to US spying technology.Earlier, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he had no evidence that Russian troops were withdrawing from border positions.

Oil prices mixed amid Libyan violence

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Oil prices diverged Monday amid escalating violence in crude producer Libya following a coup attempt by a rogue general that has raised concerns about potential supply disruptions, analysts said. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in June, rose 94 cents to $102.96 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in July dipped 13 cents to stand at $109.62 a barrel in late London deals and compared with Fridays closing level.Armed groups attacked Libyas interim parliament and an airbase in the east Sunday, adding to turmoil in the country where a colonel claiming to speak on behalf of the army declared that parliament had been suspended. The situation in Libya is having a firm impact on sentiment, said CMC Markets analyst Michael McCarthy. There has been no impact on supply but it is a good reminder to investors of potential disruptions that exist not only in Ukraine but also in oil-producing countries like Libya, he told AFP.Since the toppling of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011, successive Libyan governments have struggled to impose order as heavily armed former rebel brigades carve out their own fiefdoms. The violence in Libya, a member of the OPEC cartel, comes just weeks after the resumption of oil exports following a nine-month blockade of sea terminals by rebels. Its exports are expected to quadruple to one million barrels per day by mid-June, as slashed output is restored.McCarthy said oil prices also remain propped up by the Ukraine crisis, where rebels are attempting to break away from the former Soviet state and become a part of Russia.Ukraine is a major conduit for Russian oil and gas exports to Western Europe, and analysts fear that an escalation of the crisis could hit supplies and send prices soaring.

Libya risks civil war with spike in anarchy

Posted:

TRIPOLI (AFP) - A dramatic spike in lawlessness in Libyas two largest cities has edged the country closer to civil war between heavily armed rival militias, stirring concern abroad and on oil markets.Gunmen stormed parliament in southern Tripoli on Sunday, hot on the heels of an anti-Islamist offensive by a rogue general in the eastern city of Benghazi. With interim authorities failing to build a regular army and police force, militias have ruled the roost since they ousted longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi in a 2011 revolution. After the attack on parliament, a colonel claiming to speak on behalf of the army declared that the General National Congress (GNC) had been suspended.Authorities did not comment but instead called for national dialogue.Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani said two people were killed and 55 wounded in clashes between rival militias in southern Tripoli. But he said the violence had no real link to the offensive by ex-general Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi.Witnesses said the Tripoli assailants belonged to the powerful Zintan brigades that have attacked the GNC in the past.MPs were evacuated from the building as heavy gunfire erupted after a convoy of armoured vehicles headed for the GNC.The Zintan brigades control areas in southern Tripoli around the airport.Gunmen set fire to an annex of the parliament building and several cars parked nearby were damaged before the gunmen withdrew towards the airport.Militias have launched several attacks on the GNC, including on March 2 when two lawmakers were shot and wounded. The Tripoli violence came two days after fierce fighting killed 79 people in Benghazi, where Haftar unleashed his so-called National Army on Islamist militiamen, backed by warplanes. Also on Sunday, armed Islamists attacked Benina air base in Benghazi but no one was hurt, its commander Colonel Saad al-Werfalli said.- We will return -Haftar, accused by Tripoli of staging a coup, has said he is readying a new assault on Islamists in Benghazi, vowing to eradicate terrorism. Each battle is followed by a regrouping of units. And we will return in force, he said.Haftar, who led ground forces in the 2011 revolution, said: Our operation is not a coup and we do not plan to seize power.Sharing the Zintan militias hostility toward the interim parliament, Haftar has said he does not recognise the GNC whose mandate has already expired and who are rejected by the people. The interim parliament, in which Islamists are strongly represented, sparked outrage earlier this year when it extended its mandate from February until December.Subsequent protests compelled it to promise early elections and a new electoral law.The army says Haftar is backed by tribes, army defectors and former rebels who oppose Libyas interim authorities. His forces on Friday mainly targeted Ansar al-Sharia, designated by the United States as a terrorist group. In the face of growing anarchy in Tripoli, Saudi Arabia on Monday shut down its embassy and evacuated its diplomatic staff on a special flight. Two Tunisian carriers, Tunisair and Syphax Airlines, suspended all flights to and from Libya. Flights resumed later Monday except to Benghazi, where the airport is closed until May 25, Tunisair said. The European Union, meanwhile, said it was deeply concerned by the violence in Libya. The EU renews its commitment to support the Libyan people... and calls on all parties to build consensus so as to ensure a transition to a stable democracy, said foreign affairs head Catherine Ashtons spokesman. With the violence sounding alarm bells abroad, oil prices advanced Monday due to concerns over potential supply disruptions from oil-rich Libya, analysts said. The US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in June, rose 71 cents to $102.73 a barrel.Brent North Sea crude for delivery in July climbed 41 cents to stand at $110.16 a barrel in London midday deals.

Maliki emerges atop Iraq poll in bid to remain PM

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki won by far the most seats in parliamentary elections, results showed Monday, putting him in the drivers seat for a third term despite vocal opposition. His State of Law alliance fell short of an overall majority, however, meaning Maliki will have to court rivals from across the communal spectrum, some of whom have sharply criticised him and refused to countenance his bid for re-election.Results from the election commission showed State of Law garnered 92 out of 328 parliamentary seats, with Maliki himself winning more than 721,000 personal votes. Both were by far the highest such figures from the April 30 vote -- the first since US troops withdrew from Iraq at the end of 2011 -- and marked significant increases compared to Malikis performance in the last general election in 2010.This sets Maliki up for a third term, said Ayham Kamel, Middle East and North Africa Director at the Eurasia Group consultancy. It wont be without challenges, but ... the results make me even more confident that Maliki is going to be prime minister again.Malikis bloc won 30 seats in Baghdad alone, and came first in 10 out of 18 provinces overall, all of them in the premiers traditional heartland in the Shiite-majority south of the country.Celebratory gunfire could be heard inside the heavily-fortified Green Zone, home to Malikis official residence as well as the US and British embassies, and in the centre of Baghdad. It was seen as an indication of support within the security forces for the premier. His main rivals all finished with between 16 and 33 seats overall, according to an AFP tally of election commission results. The results announced Monday can still be challenged and could change before they are finally certified by the countrys supreme court.- Testament to courage -Both the US embassy in Baghdad and the UN mission to Iraq welcomed the results, with Washington saying it was a testament to the courage and resilience of the Iraqi people, and another milestone in the democratic development of Iraq.Iraqs political parties have for weeks been meeting and manoeuvring as they seek to build post-election alliances, but the formation of a new government is still expected to take months. As in previous elections, the main blocs are expected to agree on an encompassing package that ensures the prime minister, president and parliament speaker are all selected together.Under a de facto agreement established in recent years, the prime minister is a Shiite Arab, the president is a Kurd and the speaker of parliament is a Sunni Arab. After the last polls, it took nine months to form a government as parties engaged in protracted horse-trading and several blocs tried to oppose Malikis bid for re-election.Voters often complain of poor electricity and sewerage services, rampant corruption, high unemployment and a litany of other concerns, but the month-long campaign preceding the vote concentrated on Malikis bid for a third term.Malikis critics accuse him of consolidating power, particularly within the security forces, and blame him for a year-long deterioration in security, and say there has not been enough improvement in the quality of life. The election and its aftermath came amid a surge in violence that has killed more than 3,500 people this year, fuelling fears that Iraq could be slipping back into the all-out conflict that cost tens of thousands of lives in 2006 and 2007.In particular, the 63-year-old faces strong and vocal opposition in the Sunni-dominated west and the Kurdish north, with rivals there insisting they will not agree to a third term.Maliki, who has been in charge since 2006, blames external factors such as the war in neighbouring Syria for the surge in unrest, and says his so-called partners in government snipe at him in public and block his legislative efforts in parliament. The run-up to the election was plagued by attacks on candidates and campaign rallies, as well as allegations of malpractice that apparently contributed to lower turnout in areas populated by disgruntled minority Sunnis.More than 9,000 candidates ran for the 328 seats in parliament, with about 62 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

China says 'fabricated' US hacking charges jeopardise ties

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - China on Monday rejected as absurd the US indictment of five of its military officers over alleged cyber-espionage, warning the move threatened relations between the worlds two largest economies. The indictment, based on fabricated facts, grossly violates the basic norms governing international relations and jeopardises China-US cooperation and mutual trust, foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.Beijing has asked that Washington immediately correct its mistake and withdraw the indictment, he said, noting:The US accusation against Chinese personnel is purely ungrounded and absurd. The spokesman said China would also suspend the activities of a bilateral cyber working group due to a lack of sincerity on the part of the US, and reiterated that Beijing itself was a victim of severe US cyber theft. In the first-ever prosecution of state actors over cyber-espionage, a US federal grand jury indicted the five on charges they broke into computers to benefit Chinese state-owned companies, leading to job losses in the United States in steel, solar and other industries.Prosecutors said that the officers belonged to Unit 61398 of the Peoples Liberation Army. A report last year by security firm Mandiant said that the unit had thousands of workers operating out of a non-descript, 12-story building on the outskirts of Shanghai where they pilfer intellectual property and government secrets.
