Somalia's Shebab kill at least six in Mogadishu hotel car bombing Posted: MOGADISHU (AFP) - Somalias Shebab insurgents killed at least six people Sunday in a huge car bomb attack on a heavily guarded hotel in the capital Mogadishu that is also home to several diplomatic missions, officials and witnesses said. The suicide attack, the latest in a string of bomb blasts and killings in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation, came as US President Barack Obama left neighbouring Kenya and headed to Ethiopia, both key nations contributing troops to the African Union force battling the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group. In a statement quoted by jihadist websites, the Shebab said they attacked the Jazeera Palace hotel, home to the diplomatic missions of China, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and is popular among Somali government officials and foreign visitors. We have seen around six people killed, most of them hotel security guards, said government security officer Mohamed Jama, adding that the toll might rise. The Shebab said the suicide bomber had attacked the hotel in retaliation for the killing of dozens of innocent civilians they claimed had died during attacks this week by Ethiopian forces against Shebab bases in southern Somalia.Local resident Abdihakim Ainte, a political analyst, was nearby when the bomb exploded and described a huge blast that smashed his window. The hotel was torn apart by the blast, with the side of the six-storey hotel demolished by the explosion, AFP reporters said. The enormous blast also sent a thick plume of smoke high into the air.Journalist Mohamed Abdikarim, who worked for Universal TV, was among those killed, the National Union of Somali Journalists said in a message of condolence to his family. The Jazeera is close to the fortified international airport, which houses the United Nations, Western diplomatic missions and AMISOM -- the AU force in Somalia. The hotel has also been the target of Shebab attacks in the past, including in 2012 when suicide bombers stormed the hotel while President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was inside.Mohamud on Sunday condemned the heinous terrorist attack. The terrorists are shaken by the joint military offensive engaged by the Somali and AMISOM troops, and they are desperately targeting innocent civilians, he said. AMISOM, which helped to evacuate the wounded and rescue those who had been staying in the hotel, said the attack demonstrates the demonic agenda of the Shebab. The Shebab are fighting to overthrow Somalias Western-backed government which is propped up and protected by the 22,000-strong AMISOM force. On Saturday Shebab gunmen in Mogadishu also killed MP Abdulahi Hussein Mohamud, spraying his vehicle with gunfire as he travelled through a southern district of the city, killing him, his two guards and the driver. The Shebab said in a statement that its mujahedeen fighters targeted and killed a member of the parliament and his guards, adding that it will continue targeting lawmakers. The US president, speaking in Nairobi on Saturday, said that while the Shebab had been weakened, the overall security threat posed by the group remained. We have been able to decrease their effective control within Somalia and have weakened those networks operating here in East Africa. That doesnt mean the problem is solved, Obama said.We can degrade significantly the capacity of the terrorist organisations, but they can still do damage, he added.Somali government and AMISOM troops last week launched a fresh offensive it said was aimed at flushing the insurgents out of rural areas in southern Somalia, in an operation involving Ethiopian and Kenyan forces.Deployed to Somalia since 2007, AMISOM has helped push back Shebab across much of the countrys south, retaking towns and territory the group had held for years.US drone strikes have also taken their toll on Shebab, killing senior commanders, including the groups leader Ahmed Godane in September last year. |
Tennis: Nadal faces Verdasco in tough return Posted: HAMBURG (AFP) - Rafael Nadal will mark his return to Hamburg after a seven-year absence with a tough opener against compatriot Fernando Verdasco.Nadal, down at 10 in the world after a tortuous year in which he lost his French Open title and suffered another early exit from Wimbledon, has decided to play the clay court tournament in a bid to resurrect his fortunes before heading for the US hard court season.Nadal, 29, has a 13-2 career lead over Verdasco but his compatriot has won their last two clashes -- on the hard courts of Miami earlier this year and on clay in Madrid in 2012.In his last visit to the German city, Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the 2008 final. He is 11-2 at the tournament, having only lost to Federer in 2007 and to former Roland Garros champion Gaston Gaudio in 2003.I am very happy to be back in Hamburg, I havent been here since 2008 so its great to be back in such a nice city. I have great memories about this tournament, Nadal told www.atpworldtour.com on Sunday. I think probably defeating Carlos Moya in 2003 was a very important match for me at the time but also I remember very well the match against Novak Djokovic in 2008 which was very emotional. In his first tournament since Wimbledon, Nadal will be playing doubles also in Hamburg. He is set to partner 18-year-old Jaume Munar, who also hails from Mallorca. I feel good, there are no problems. I look forward to this week, said Nadal. The Spaniard has already been defeated 12 times this year, including just a second career loss at Roland Garros and a second round exit to German journeyman Dustin Brown at Wimbledon. In 2014, Nadal was beaten just 11 times. He was defeated only seven times in 2013 and lost a mere six matches in the whole of 2012.I need to accept that it is a new situation and face it with a good attitude and keep working hard to return to a good level, said Nadal.I feel good. I dont have any injuries and that is the important thing. |
Tennis: Stosur defeats Knapp for Bad Gastein title Posted: BAD GASTEIN (AFP) - Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur came from a set down to win the Bad Gastein WTA Open on Sunday with a 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 triumph over Italian Karin Knapp. The 31-year-old Australian triumphed over Knapp who was playing her second match of the day after defeating compatriot and number one seed Sara Errani 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 7-5 in the semi-finals.That match had been held over since Saturday because of rain.It was a very hard match today, said Stosur after her eighth career title.I was getting completely outplayed in that first set, and even though she was up in the second set too, I started to feel like I was doing a little better. Obviously she served for the match (5-4 in the second set) but I hung in there, got that set then played better and better from there. Its not ideal to be playing a semifinal and final in one day, a two-and-a-half-hour match in the morning then another two and a half hours in the afternoon, but unfortunately thats just what happens with the weather sometimes. And she did serve for the match, so she wasnt doing too badly either. |
Cycling: 'Incredible' Froome wins second Tour de France Posted: PARIS (AFP) - Chris Froome said he felt incredible after winning his second Tour de France title following Sundays 21st and final stage to Paris.Briton Froome, 30, crossed the line on the Champs Elysees arm-in-arm with his Sky teammates to clinch a second Grand Boucle crown following his 2013 success. This is such a great race, what can I say? I feel a lot of emotion, said Froome after a Tour in which he was doused with urine, spat at, insulted and accused of cheating.Of course it was a very, very difficult Tour, both on the bike and off it. Im so happy to be here in yellow. There were a few difficulties, a few extra stresses outside of the race but thats cycling in 2015.Im happy to be in this position to speak for cycling today.Germanys Andre Greipel won the stage, his fourth this year and 10th in total, ahead of Frenchman Bryan Coquard and Alexander Kristoff of Norway.Colombian Nairo Quintana finished second overall with his Spanish Movistar teammate Alejandro Valverde taking third, his best finish at the Tour at the age of 35.Im not disappointed at all, Ive confirmed my ability and my status within the team, said Quintana.Im only 25 so I have many more opportunities to try to win the Tour.(Froome) is a great rival, he suffered a lot for his victory and was very strong -- he deserves it.Rain had rendered the cobbles at the finish on the Champs Elysees dangerous so organisers neutralised the race from the moment it reached Paris. It meant the official timing was stopped just after riders passed the finishing line for the first time ahead of 10 laps of the famous Parisian avenue. It allowed Froome and his teammates -- wearing a black kit with the traditional blue stripe replaced by a yellow one in hommage to their leaders feat -- to finish in a straight line, arm-in-arm, over a minute after the stage winner.Having already won the Tour in 2013, finishing in the same way but then because his lead to Quintana -- second that time as well -- was sufficiently large to allow him to do so, Froome became the first Briton to win the Grand Boucle for a second time.Quintana finished at 1min 12sec overall with Valverde third over five minutes back.Last years winner Vincenzo Nibali finished fourth overall, ahead of two-time former champion Alberto Contador. But on the final stage, a 109.5km run from the Parisian suburb of Sevres, Greipel emphasised his sprint superiority at this Tour. The 33-year-old had already won the second, fifth and 15th stages in sprint finishes. It made it Greipels best ever Tour, eclipsing the three stages he won in 2012.Im looking forward to a rest now, said the Lotto-Soudal rider. This Tour de France has been amazing for Lotto-Soudal, in five bunch sprints we won four of them.We can be really proud of this Tour de France, next year is another Tour de France but now Im really happy and delighted with everything that happened in these last three weeks. It continued German sprint dominance at the Tour as between Greipels two outstanding seasons, compatriot Marcel Kittel was the top fast-man winning four stages in both 2013 and 2014.Greipels expected rivals Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan could only manage sixth and seventh respectively on Sunday.Sagan did win the sprinters green points jersey, though, for the fourth year in a row, despite not managing to win a stage for the second successive year.Froome finished as king of the mountains -- only the sixth rider to finish in yellow and the polkadot jersey -- and Quintana, 25, was the best young rider as his Movistar outfit won the team competition. |
Formula One: Vettel wins Hungarian Grand Prix Posted: BUDAPEST (AFP) - German driver Sebastian Vettel delivered an emotional high-speed tribute to his late colleague Jules Bianchi on Sunday when he stormed to victory for Ferrari in a dramatic and incident-filled Hungarian Grand Prix. The four-time world champion claimed his second victory of the season and 41st of his career -- drawing him level with the late Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna in equal third on the all-time list -- after leading from the start to dominate a thrilling and unpredictable contest. The Red Bull pair of Russian Daniil Kvyat and Australian Daniel Ricciardo finished in second and third respectively. The ferocity of the contest, lit up by Vettels blazing speed and tenacity, served as an appropriate tribute to Frenchman Bianchi, who died on July 17 from injuries sustained when he collided with a recovery vehicle in torrential rain at last Octobers Japanese Grand Prix.A minutes silence for Bianchi, a Ferrari academy protégé, before the race created an emotional atmosphere that was reflected in the action and in Vettels speech to the Ferrari team on his triumphant slow-down lap.Merci Jules, cest a toi, said the winner. Thank you Jules, You will always be in our hearts... This win is for you.It was Vettels first victory in Hungary, and 21-year-old Kvyats first career podium - the best ever by a Russian driver -- as Red Bull produced a reminder of their pedigree. It was the first podium this year without a Mercedes driver.Yes, an incredible day, but this victory is for Jules, said Vettel, mindful the Frenchmans family were in attendance. It has been an incredibly tough week for all of us and, for all the people at Ferrari, who know that, sooner or later, he would have been part of our team.Kvyat said he owed his podium to his own determination. After Turn One, I thought my race might be over because I had a massive flat-spot, but my team told me to keep pushing and today I learned what it means to never give up, said Kvyat.Ricciardo said: It was a crazy race. I had a contact at the restart with Lewis and thought my race might be over. I had contact with Nico and thought my race was over...I left it all on the track today. I gave it everything and I owe my race to Jules. I gained extra strength today and I owe that to him.Dutch teenager Jos Verstappen finished fourth for Toro Rosso -- on a track where his father Jos finished on the podium in 1994 -- ahead of two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso who delivered the troubled McLaren Honda teams best result of the year in fifth place.Series leader and defending two-time champion Briton Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, after starting from pole position, for Mercedes to enlarge his advantage in the title race after an afternoon of incidents, mishaps and penalties.Inspired, perhaps, by the teams call for total commitment to racing in a signal of respect for Bianchi, Vettel surged from third on the grid to pass Rosberg into Turn One.Behind him, team-mate Kimi Raikkonen followed closely as both Rosberg and Hamilton attempted to defend, but just as at Silverstone three weeks previously, the two Mercedes men were out-started comprehensively. Hamilton was relegated to fourth on the opening lap during which, in an attempt to pass Rosberg, he ran wide across a gravel trap at the chicane. He returned to the track in a spray of stones, re-joining in 10th place. Nico crossed my line there, he pushed me wide, said Hamilton, a claim not supported by video replays. After closing the gap behind Rosberg to five seconds, Hamilton lost time in traffic while Raikkonen, suffering more bad luck, lost power and slowed before Hulkenberg, after losing the front wing on his Force India car in a frightening incident on the straight, crashed directly into the barriers at Turn One.A virtual safety car was deployed immediately followed by the Safety Car as debris was cleared. As the field closed up, both Rosberg and Hamilton pitted for harder medium tyres for a final rush to the flag.More drama erupted at the re-start on lap 49. Sensing his chance, Rosberg attacked and passed Raikkonen for second while Hamilton, on harder tyres, struggled against Ricciardo and collided with him at Turn One, the Briton losing a front wing end-plate.It was his final significant act. He pitted on lap 52 for a new front wing, re-joined 13th and was then given a drive-through penalty for his part in the incident.Hamilton was admirably frank about his performance.I was all over the place, said Hamilton, who had been fastest in every session on Friday and Saturday.I dont have any words to explain what happened today. It was a really bad performance from myself.I pushed and never gave up, but when I had two different choices I chose the wrong one very time. It was weird...Do I deserve any points? I didnt give up and drove as hard as I could. To come away from one of the worst performances Ive put in in a long, long time... it shows we are human. |
Football: Walcott seals Emirates Cup success for Arsenal Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal stepped up their impressive preparations for the new season by winning the Emirates Cup for the first time since 2010 as Theo Walcotts strike clinched a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg on Sunday.Walcotts second half goal ensured Arsene Wengers side took the silverware as they finished above Villarreal, who also won both their matches but had an inferior goals scored record, in the four-team pre-season tournament at their Emirates Stadium. After a swaggering 6-0 rout of Lyon on Saturday, this was a more prosaic performance from the hosts, but there was still plenty to encourage Gunners boss Wenger ahead of their Premier League opener against West Ham on August 9.Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, the only major signing made by Wenger since the end of last season, marked his home debut with the kind of composed display that was so often missing during Arsenals goalkeeping woes in recent years. After starting last seasons FA Cup final win against Aston Villa in the central strikers role he has coveted for much of his career, Walcotts cool finish provided further evidence the winger might be ready to make a permanent transition this season. There was also a tantalising glimpse into Arsenals future as 17-year-old French midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide made an eye-catching start 24 hours after an equally effervescent performance from fellow teenager Alex Iwobi. And, having already secured the Asia Trophy earlier this month, the Gunners can now clinch a hat-trick of pre-season trophies if they defeat Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley next Sunday.Despite his long spell with bitter rivals Chelsea, Cech was given a warm welcome by the Arsenal fans in his second appearance for the club.Relieved to see Wenger finally sign a world-class keeper, the 33-year-old Czechs first touch, comfortably holding a Kevin De Bruyne cross, was greeted with a standing ovation from large sections of the crowd.Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking says the Bundesliga runners-up have been destabilised by speculation that Manchester City are about to make a 50 million pound bid for Belgium playmaker De Bruyne. But they still dominated much of the first half, working opportunities for De Bruyne, who shot well over, then former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who narrowly failed to convert a De Bruyne cross.Arsenal were unable to recapture the scintillating form that destroyed Lyon and Walcott wasted one of their few first half chances when he shot straight at goalkeeper Diego Benaglio from a tight angle.Wolfsburg were presented with a golden opportunity to take the lead when Timm Klose, unmarked 10 yards from goal, lashed wildly over from a deflected Andre Schurrle corner.Cech then easily smothered Bendtners effort, before Arsenal finally sprang to life with Mesut Ozil dragging his shot just wide from Nacho Monreals pass.In the end, it took a moment of inspiration from Reine-Adelaide to break the deadlock.Signed from the Lens academy last month after helping France win the European Under-17 Championships, Reine-Adelaide has been hailed by Wenger as something special and he showed why with a quality contribution to Walcotts 50th minute goal.A deft first touch and nimble turn took the youngster away from his marker and he advanced quickly towards the penalty area before slipping a clever pass through to Walcott, who calmly slotted past Benaglio.Aware of his potential move to rivals City, De Bruyne drew mocking jeers from the Arsenal fans when he miscued a woeful effort well over with his last contribution before being substituted. There was still time for Cech to underline why Wenger paid 11 million pound to prise him away from Chelsea as he blocked Ricardo Rodriguezs low drive, then got down smartly to keep out Josuha Guilavoguis effort. |
Football: Two-goal Hulk buries World Cup draw controversy Posted: MOSCOW (AFP) - Brazilian striker Hulk scored twice to bury the controversy of being axed from the World Cup draw as reigning champions Zenit St Petersburg cruised to a 4-1 win at Ural Yekaterinburg.Hulk had been set to feature alongside the likes of compatriot Ronaldo and Samuel Etoo at Saturdays draw for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, just days after blasting the countrys record on racism in the sport. However, his removal from the ceremony was attributed to him having to make the 1,000-mile trip to Yekaterinburg for Sundays game.As well as his brace, Russian international Artem Dzyuba and Portuguese Miguel Danny were also on target as Zenit went top of the Russian Premier League table. At the start, we experienced problems with controlling the ball, admitted Zenit manager Andre Villas-Boas.But after our first goal we managed to create the scoring opportunities and after that we were the best team on the pitch. In general it was a fantastic performance. And of course this win is very important for us as we remained on top of the table.Dzyuba put Zenit 1-0 up in the 20th minute when he latched on to an Oleg Shatov pass to score past Ural goalkeeper Yury Zhevnov.Hulk made it 2-0 with a precise penalty half an hour later after Ural skipper Pablo Fontanello brought down Shatov in the area.In the 67th minute midfielder Alexander Yerokhin pulled one back with a long-distance drive past Yury Lodygin in the Zenit goal. But three minutes later Shatov found Hulk unmarked on the edge of the area and the Brazilian restored Zenits two-goal advantage with a powerful shot.Substitute Danny added the fourth in injury time.Krasnodar, who finished last season in third place, suffered a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Spartak Moscow.Armenian international forward Yura Movsisyan netted his teams winner in the 12th minute firing the ball from 12 metres out.Spartak head coach Dmitry Alenichev reserved his warmest praise for his teams defence. We were very organised and disciplined, especially in defence, Alenichev said. And it was the key to our success today. |
Golf: Late birdie rush gives Willett European Masters crown Posted: CRANS-MONTANA (AFP) - Englishman Danny Willett drained three late birdies and fired a bogey-free final round of 65 to win the European Masters by one shot over compatriot Matthew Fitzpatrick at Crans-Montana on Sunday. The 27-year-old Yorkshireman, who held the halfway lead at last weeks British Open and eventually finished tied for sixth, hit a five-under par round that crucially included birdies at 13, 14 and 15 as Fitzpatrick, 20, paid the price for a bogey at the 11th. Tyrell Hatton was alone in third spot on 15 under, as English players swept the top three places, with Swedens Pelle Edberg a further shot back in fourth and Indias Anirban Lahiri completing the top five on 12 under, five shots adrift of Willett. It was a great day, said Willett, who was winning his third title on the tour.Yesterday (Saturday) was a bit disappointing, but today I played some really good golf.Matt (Fitzpatrick) was snapping at my heels all day, so Im delighted to get the job done.I kept really calm all day, and just waited for the chances to come. Two wins and good performances in Majors and Golf Championships is more than I could have hoped for really, but I have worked really hard so it is nice to get the rewards for it. added Willett, who is a former world number one at amateur level and had a successful college career in the United States.Fitzpatrick was sporting in defeat and admitted the best man won on the day.I played to win but Danny just went one better, so you have to take your hat off to him, said the youngster.I dont have any regrets whatsoever, and that is all you can ask of yourself. I gave it everything, but Danny was very impressive. It is still only my first season on Tour and I am only 20, so I am still learning every week. Experiences like todays (Sunday) will be invaluable in the future. added Fitzpatrick. Hatton, 23, recorded the best score of the day with a 62 that included an eagle and six birdies, but just came up short in his bid for a maiden EPGA title. |
Golf: Dawson edges Langer and Montgomerie to Senior Open title Posted: LONDON (AFP) - American Marco Dawson fired a final round 64 to win the Senior Open at Sunningdale on Sunday and deny Scotlands Colin Montgomerie a maiden victory in the tournament. It was only the third career win for the 51-year-old, German-born Dawson who finished on 16-under, one shot ahead of German star, and last years winner, Bernhard Langer.Montgomerie had held the lead on the final day only to slip three strokes adrift at the finish with a 67. Bernhard made a phenomenal par on the 16th and Colin made a phenomenal par at the 17th, and I thought Wow, these guys arent going away, its going to be a little harder than I thought. Dawson told Sky Sports. It was great to play with them to see how they play and how they react, and I thought, Theyre not doing anything different than I am. Theyre hitting the same shots, making the same swings, making the same mistakes and making the same putts, so I just made a few more putts. |

Form not fitness behind Clarke's struggles, says Di Venuto Posted: DERBY (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarkes run of modest scores is not being exacerbated by his longstanding physical problems, according to team batting coach Michael di Venuto. The 34-year-old Clarke is one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, having scored over 8,500 Test runs, including 28 hundreds, at an average of more than 50.But he has compiled just two centuries in his last 26 Test innings and hasnt made a fifty at that level since returning on Australia recent tour of the West Indies.Clarke has had to cope with a chronic back complaint throughout his career but there are concerns that recent hamstring trouble has only made that condition worse. He hasnt looked his typical elegant self at the crease so far on the Ashes tour and, with the five-match series level at 1-1 following his sides 405-run thrashing of England at Lords, Australia would love to see Clarke back to his best come the third Test at Edgbaston, which starts on Wednesday.Di Venuto said that was possible given Clarke was suffering from no more than the kind of lean spell which afflicts all batsmen at some stage of their careers. He seems unrestricted and he hasnt had a problem since, so I certainly dont think thats any reason why he hasnt been able to get a big score of late, di Venuto told Australian media during the drawn tour match with Derbyshire.I thought he looked pretty good in the World Cup final for his 70-odd. And he looked pretty good when he couldnt move when he scored a hundred when his back was no good against India. As batsmen, you go through little patches where things dont quite click, added di Venuto.Di Venuto, however, was confident a big score from Clarke was just around the corner. Hes not too far away. He knows how to go about it and how to get himself back scoring runs. You cant do that in the nets. Youve got to do that out in the middle, added 41-year-old di Venuto, who played nine one-day internationals for Australia but did not win a Test cap.Clarke spent more than 90 minutes batting on Saturday, making 44 not out after promoting himself to open Australias second innings at Derby.Having fallen for 16 in the first innings, Clarke had made 19 on Saturday when Derbyshire wicket-keeper Harvey Hosein dropped a difficult diving chance. That reprieve apart, Clarke was rarely troubled and, if not exactly fluent, a couple of drives hinted at better days ahead.Im sure a big score is not too far away, said di Venuto. Hes meticulous in his preparation. Hes playing well in the nets, hes preparing well. He just needs a bit of luck.Someone for whom luck is not an issue at the moment is Shaun Marsh. His 101 against Derbyshire was the reserve openers second hundred in three innings this tour.Marsh is now waiting to see if the balance problems that forced opener Chris Rogers off the field at Lords last Sunday also rule his fellow left-hander out of the third Test. The older son of former Australia opener Geoff Marsh, Shauns 14 Tests have yielded just two hundreds -- 141 against Sri Lanka at Pallekelle in 2011 and 148 against South Africa at Centurion in 2014.Last year also saw him suffer the agony of being run out for 99 in the Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne.Di Venuto, though, has been heartened by Marshs recent form. For someone who hasnt had a history of scoring a lot of hundreds, I think what were seeing recently is fantastic, he said. Its brilliant weve got someone on the fringes ready to go. |
