Football: Bale and Ronaldo rule as Real cruise past Inter

Posted:

GUANGZHOU (AFP) - Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo put on a scintillating first-half show as Real Madrid cruised past Inter Milan 3-0 in the International Champions Cup in Guangzhou Monday.Jese, Raphael Varane and James Rodriguez got the goals for the Spanish giants on a hot and humid night, but it was the display of the two modern-day Galacticos that will live long in the memory of the 39,896 fans who packed the Tianhe stadium.Real Madrid thumped Manchester City 4-1 in Melbourne on Friday and it always looked like they would hand out a similar hammering to Inter as they were quickly into their stride.Karim Benzema, who has been suffering with a slight thigh injury, was not risked, giving Jese a chance to play in a three-pronged attack with the worlds two most expensive footballers, Ronaldo and Bale. And it didnt take long for Ronaldo to show his intent, a neat turn in the centre circle and darting run leading to Bale being sent clear on the left in the first minute but the Welshmans cross came to nothing.Just a minute later Inters Juan Jesus got away down the left with his cross just evading the head of the onrushing Mauro Icardi on the six-yard line. But that was about as close as the Italian side came as Madrid took control, with Bale and Ronaldo at the heart of everything good. On another day each might have claimed a first-half hat-trick in a rampant display. Bale first shot wide when set free by Ronaldo on the left and the Portuguese reproduced the Welshmans wastefulness minutes later.Ronaldo then forced two classy saves from Samir Handanovic, the second from a trademark dipping and swerving 35-yard free-kick which the keeper parried over one-handed at full stretch while Bale was terrorising full-back Martin Montoya -- on loan from Barcelona -- with his pace. When the breakthrough came after 29 minutes it inevitably involved the marauding Bale, who this time chose to swing a crossfield ball from right to left and find the advancing full-back Marcelo in space. The Brazilian had time to pick out Jese near the back post with a pinpoint cross. The Spaniard turned neatly inside Jeison Murillo and found the right-hand corner of the net with a sharp left-foot finish to give Madrid a deserved lead.Ronaldo went through his full repertoire of tricks to huge roars and Bale was a constant threat. But with the superb Handanovic making a series of fine saves to deny the pair, Inter somehow made it to the break without conceding further.A glut of half-time substitutions which saw Ronaldo and Bale depart interrupted Madrids flow, but they remained the more likely to score. And the second goal duly came on 55 minutes when Inter failed to clear a corner properly. Toni Kroos helped the ball back in to substitute Lucas Vazquez on the right of the box and he picked out the lurking Raphael Varane, another sub, who buried his header from six yards. There was just time for Colombias World Cup star James Rodriguez, who had only joined up with the Real Madrid squad in China on Sunday after his Copa America exertions, to enter the fray in the 77th minute. He completed a terrific cameo with a 35-yard left-foot curling free-kick into the left-hand corner for Reals third goal two minutes from time.Inter, despite boasting Serie As joint top scorer last term in Icardi, have lost all three matches on a miserable China tour and failed to score a single goal.Hotshot Icardi will soon be partnered up front by Stevan Jovetic, who arrived in Milan Monday for a medical and to complete the formalities of his move from Manchester City to the San Siro. For manager Roberto Mancini, who on this evidence badly needs to bolster an impotent strike force, the Montenegrin cant arrive quickly enough.

Football: Barca fined over whistling at Spain's king

MADRID (AFP) - Spanish authorities Monday moved to fine FC Barcelona 66,000 euros ($67,000) and Athletic Bilbao 18,000 euros over last seasons Cup final where fans of the Catalan and Basque sides whistled Spains King Felipe VI.The state Higher Sports Council proposed the sanctions for behaviour whose aim was to transform the sporting event into a stage for political demands through intolerant acts. These included whistling the national anthem and His Majesty the King, patron of the cup, the council said in a statement. It also proposed a 123,000-euro fine for the Royal Spanish Football Federation as organiser of the Copa del Rey final at Barcelonas Nou Camp ground on May 30, which Barca won 3-1.Fans of both sides drowned out the Spanish national anthem with boos and whistles at the start of the match as Felipe stood solemn-faced.The controversy came at a time of high political sensitivities, with Catalan leaders campaigning for independence from Spain ahead of a key regional election expected in September. The sports councils Antiviolence Commission set various administrative fines for the whistling and for alleged security shortcomings including the burning of flares. Those targeted by the fines can appeal against them to the state authorities, who will hear their claims before making a final ruling, a council spokesman told AFP.The fine against Barcelona consisted of 6,000 euros for failing to take sufficient action beforehand against groups that called the protests, and 60,000 for security breaches.FC Barcelona called the councils decision unjust and unacceptable and said it would challenge both parts of the fine. The European and Spanish champions will defend the freedom of expression of its members and fans, it said in a statement shortly after the council announced its decision. The events in the Nou Camp reflected a feeling. They were not organised nor channelled by the club but the club totally respects them. The commission issued an 18,000-euro fine against Athletic Bilbao for failing to crack down on fans who announced their planned protests ahead of the match. It also issued fines for various Catalan pro-independence civil groups.

Oil prices slide after Shanghai stock market dives

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices slid for a fourth straight day Monday as the steepest drop in Chinese equities since 2007 fueled fresh fears about reduced demand in the worlds top energy consumer.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for September delivery fell 75 cents to $47.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The global benchmark, Brent North Sea crude for September, tumbled to $53.47 a barrel in London trade, down $1.15 from Fridays settlement.Right now the market continues to look for a bottom, said Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy. On Monday, Chinese shares slumped 8.5 percent on the Shanghai stock market, their biggest one-day fall since February 2007, after weak economic data revived fears about the health of the worlds second-largest economy. The Shanghai rout rattled global financial markets. It came despite recent unprecedented efforts by the Chinese government to prop up equities that have slumped since mid-June.McGillian said that demand fears had pressured the oil market. The plunge in Chinese stocks revved up concerns economic growth might be slowing down, he said. Traders were anticipating a decline in energy demand particularly in China and worried about the record production levels you see across the world.Joseph George, an analyst at Schneider Electric, noted that the US oil rig count increased last week for the third time this month, by 21 to 659.US producers continue to drill at the fastest rate in three decades despite lower prices, he said. US production has yet to show signs of a substantial fall and oil markets remain oversupplied.

Euro gets boost from eurozone growth data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - A rise in German business confidence and signs of a pickup in lending in Europe gave a boost to the euro Monday. The single currency jumped more than one percent against the dollar, hitting $1.1132, the highest level in two weeks, before easing to $1.1091 in late trade.Behind the gain was a jump in the growth of the M1 measure of eurozone money supply, to 11.8 percent in June, signaling strengthened overall growth.Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics said the gain in M1 -- very liquid deposits -- points to a pickup in incomes in households and the private sector. In a bank-based economy, overnight demand deposits is the most direct measure of liquidity available to the private economy, and this indicator continues to tell a convincing cyclical recovery story, Shepherdson said.Combined with low inflation, real M1 -- the best leading indicator in the eurozone -- indicates a surge in GDP growth on par with previous record business cycle upturns.Added to that was a gain in the Ifo index of German business confidence, which rose to 108 points, the first increase in three months, from 107.5 in June.Economist Andreas Rees of UniCredit said that illustrates that German companies have gradually been leaving the Greek crisis behind them. The fundamental upward trend in the German economy which started in autumn of last year is intact, he said.

Data analyses back Sanofi dengue vaccine: study

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A dengue vaccine candidate by French drugmaker Sanofi protects more than three quarters of participants, an analysis found Monday. The experimental drug allowed 80.8 percent of children aged nine and older to avoid hospitalization, according to three trials analyzed by the New England Journal of Medicine. For younger children, those less than nine years old, vaccine efficacy was 56.1 percent. For severe dengue, the vaccine protected 93.2 percent of participants aged nine to 16, and 44.5 percent of the younger set.The researchers also noted an unexplained increase in hospitalizations for dengue fever during the third year of vaccination for the younger children. This trend should be carefully monitored during long-term follow-up, the study said. But overall, the researchers noted a reduction in dengue disease in the efficacy surveillance phase among children who received the vaccine in regions where the disease is endemic. The dengue vaccine candidate has the potential to significantly reduce disease burden in endemic countries, Sanofi said in a statement. The data analyzed referred to three clinical trials with 10,275 participants, 20,869 participants and 4,002 participants respectively. The trials were conducted in Asian-Pacific and Latin American tropical and subptropical regions.Dengue has grown more prevalent since the 1950s, with 50 million cases annually, including 500,000 of dengue hemorrhagic fever, which the World Health Organization estimates kills in more than 20 percent of cases. The disease is still rare in non-tropical regions.

Bell eager for Ashes turnaround

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - England batsman Ian Bell accepts his form in the brutal environment of Test cricket hasnt been good enough lately but believes a promotion to number three on his home ground will help him come good in the third Ashes Test.Englands most experienced batsman, having made his Test debut 11 years ago, Bell has struggled for runs during the Ashes thus far with scores of one, 60, one and 11 in the first two matches. There had been speculation that, with England repeatedly suffering top-order collapses, Bell might be dropped for the third Test at his Warwickshire home ground starting Wednesday after Australia levelled the five-match series with a crushing 405-run at Lords.England were skittled out for just 103 in the second innings at Lords as Australia won with more than a day to spare. But rather than being dropped, Bell has been promoted to number three in place of the axed Gary Ballance with Jonny Bairstow, averaging over a hundred in the County Championship for Yorkshire, called up into the Test side. Its a brutal environment you have to perform, the 33-year-old Bell told the BBC on Monday.I know I havent performed to the best of my ability in the last two months....The only thing I can do really is focus on whats in hand, a home Test match -- always great fun, know the ground inside out, Ive got to enjoy myself.Bells recent performances have revived a longstanding criticism that, for all the technical ability that has yielded over 7,000 Test runs at an average of more than 43 with 22 hundreds, he is rarely a man for a crisis. But Bell, whose 562 runs at an average of 62 played a key role in Englands 2013 home Ashes series win, told Sky Sports of his promotion to number three: Weve obviously changed a little bit there, and hopefully its an opportunity to go and score some big runs.Bell, aiming to become the first Warwickshire batsman to score a Test hundred at Edgbaston, added: I still believe that when Im playing at my best Im a world-class player and Im desperate for the kind of runs that come with being a top-order player for England, but Ive known over a long time with England that your job is to score runs.I know that I havent done that to my capability over the last six or seven Test matches, and hopefully this is the start of me kicking on and going forward again.Meanwhile Joe Root, who made 134 and 60 in Englands 169-run win in the first Test in Cardiff, said that while no-one had a divine right to an England place, Bell was capable of putting his poor run of scores behind him at Edgbaston.I think every international player is playing for his place at all times, Yorkshire batsman Root told reporters at Edgbaston on Monday.Obviously some guys are scoring more consistently than others, but Ians record is fantastic.Hes playing at his home ground and its obviously an Ashes series, which last time it was in England he was outstanding, so Im sure he will be dying to get back out there and lay a big marker down.Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc was equally conscious of Bells proven ability at Test level. Hes struggling a little bit, but hes got a great record on his side and he had a great series against us last time we came over here, so were not taking him for granted, Starc said.

Starc pitches into England

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc weighed into the ongoing row over the state of pitches for the Ashes series on Monday by accusing England of not knowing what they want.Following the tourists crushing 405-run win in the second Test at Lords, which levelled the five-match series at 1-1, Trevor Bayliss -- Englands Australian coach -- called for typical English seaming wickets rather than the slow and low pitch at the home of cricket which he said had played into the Australians hands. There have been suggestions that England and Wales Cricket Board chiefs have ordered groundsmen to prepare deliberately slow surfaces for the five-match series in a bid to blunt Australias impressive pace attack, although England team director Andrew Strauss has denied issuing such a request. But with the tourists quicks significantly faster than their England counterparts, Australia took the surface out of the equation at Lords, where the lack of seam movement hampered James Anderson more than anyone. That match saw Anderson, Englands most successful Test bowler with 406 wickets, go wicketless for the first time in 59 Tests.Theyre not really sure what they want to do now, Starc said Monday ahead of the third Test, which starts at Edgbaston on Wednesday. Some of their team want batting-friendly wickets and that hasnt helped them at Lords. They want to get their bowlers back in the game, but weve got the pace as well. It doesnt matter what they dish up. Weve got all bases covered. The Test pitch at Edgbaston, the Birmingham headquarters of county side Warwickshire, had a decent covering of grass when the covers were removed on Monday.Warwickshire groundsman Gary Barwell didnt lack for advice on Monday, with ECB pitches consultant Chris Wood and Mick Hunt, the long-serving Lords groundsman, both examining the pitch. When the pitch was covered a set of lamps more commonly associated with the cultivation of cannabis -- an illegal drug in Britain -- were placed near the wicket. The lamps, borrowed from West Midlands police - who removed them from local cannabis growers -- and used previously to aid pitch preparation at Edgbaston, can help dry the outfield which, ahead of the Ashes clash, has been pelted with rain during the past few days. And when the heat from the lamps is shone directly on the pitch, this is said to aid the quest for extra pace and bounce. But with just two days until the Test starts, Barwell effectively only has two options that are now likely to have a major impact upon the state of the pitch -- leave the grass on or cut it off.I will be surprised if it stays the way it is, said Starc of the heavily scrutinised surface. If it does, then I am sure all the quicks will be lining up.Whatever the eventual state of the pitch, England will have to improve their play against an Australia pace attack led by Starcs fellow left-armer Mitchell Johnson and also featuring Josh Hazlewood.England all-rounder Moeen Ali recently said Johnson had bowled very well in one innings out of four this series. But the way in which Ali was bounced out by Johnson, fending a rising delivery to short leg as England collapsed to a woeful 103 all out in their second innings at Lords, suggested Australias spearhead was coming into form. Moeen can keep watching the replay of the ball he got in the second innings if he likes. I dont want to face that stuff, Starc said. England have rejigged their line-up in a bid to avoid the kind of top-order collapse that has seen them three wickets down for 43 or fewer runs seven times in their last 13 Test innings.Gary Ballance has been dropped and replaced by Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow, who is averaging over 100 in the County Championship this season.Bairstow is set to bat at number five with the struggling Ian Bell due to take Ballances place at number three.Anytime you have got the opposition changing line-ups you are in a good spot, said Starc.

Australia's women seize Ashes momentum

LONDON (AFP) - Australia seized the initiative in the womens Ashes with an 89-run win over England in a one-day international at Worcester on Monday.Meg Lanning followed a century in Australias series-levelling win in Bristol on Thursday with another key contribution as she made 85 from 89 balls at New Road.Ellyse Perry provided support with 67 from 58 balls as Australia posted a total of 241 for seven. Perry then dealt a huge blow to Englands run chase by dismissing Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor in her first two overs.England never really recovered, succumbing tamely to 152 all out and a defeat that leaves them 4-2 down in the multi-format Ashes - although there are 10 points still to play for, starting with the Test at Canterbury next week. The win also lifts Australia five points clear at the top of the ICC Womens World Championship, and seven ahead of England who remain in fourth - with only the top four teams securing automatic qualification to the 2017 World Cup.England had chosen to bowl first after Sundays rain forced the match into the reserve day, but the hosts made a key mistake when they failed to take advantage of a mix-up between Lanning and Nicole Bolton that left Australias captain stranded.Instead of reducing Australia to 49 for two, England had to wait until the 27th over before their next breakthrough.Alyssa Healy joined Lanning to step up the pace in a third-wicket stand of 31, but it was when Perry joined her captain that the real damage was done. They put on 85 in 13 overs, with Lanning enjoying a second life when Lydia Greenway could not hold a sharp chance at point off Katherine Brunt.Lanning was denied a second consecutive century, but Perry powered on to take her tally for the series to 193 at an average of 64.She then underlined her all-round value by having Edwards caught behind from the fourth ball of the England innings, a wicket which proved a hammer blow to the hosts hopes.
