Polish media abuzz with rumoured discovery of Nazi 'gold train'

Posted:

WARSAW (AFP) - Local media are abuzz over the rumoured discovery of an armoured train car in southwestern Poland, which has revived old lore of trains full of gold and jewels stolen by the Nazis that vanished after World War II.Has Hitlers gold train been located? asked the leading daily Gazeta Wyborcza in a headline echoed by broadcaster TVP.info, tabloid Fakt and broadcaster TVN24 among other media. The legends revolve around the huge secret underground tunnels near the southwestern city of Walbrzych that Nazi Germany had built by forced labourers and concentration camp inmates. The tunnels, code-named Riese (Giant), were built to be used as production spaces for German strategic weapons as the site was safe from Allied air raids.Portions of the tunnels are now open to tourists, while the region also attracts treasure-hunters inspired by old rumours that the Third Reich had stashed its treasures in the underground passages. But even the two men -- a German and Pole -- who claim to have found a 120-150 metre-long (400-500 foot-long) train are skeptical that it contains gold, according to their lawyer. These are serious people... What they presented during our talk makes me believe this business (of the train) is very credible, lawyer Jaroslaw Chmielewski told the Polish news portal Onet.My clients are however skeptical as to whether it is really the famous (Nazi) train packed with gold and other precious objects, he said. But we also cant completely exclude the possibility.Walbrzych cityhall spokesman Arkadiusz Grudzien told AFP they had indeed received a legal letter saying the two men had identified the location of a train carriage, probably armoured. He said there was no mention of the exact location of the find, but that the men had asked to meet with city officials.Local Radio Wroclaw said the men are asking for 10 percent of whatever may be found on the train. They claim they found a lost train full of gold. And they want a reward, headlined broadcaster TVN24.

Cricket: Smith, Warner star for Australia in Ashes finale

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australias future leadership team of Steven Smith and David Warner helped restore some pride for the tourists against England on Thursdays first day of the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval. When bad flight forced an early close, Australia, who had lost the toss, were 287 for three -- a marked contrast to their 60 all out in the first innings of their series-losing defeat in the fourth Test at Nottinghams Trent Bridge.Smith, who will take over as Australias Test captain when Michael Clarke retires following this match, was 78 not out after future vice-captain Warner had made 85.Adam Voges was unbeaten on 47, having helped Smith add an unbroken 101 for the fourth wicket.A green-tinged pitch and overcast skies were reminiscent of conditions at Trent Bridge a fortnight ago where Stuart Broad took a devastating eight for 15 as Australia, likewise sent into bat by England captain Alastair Cook, collapsed in stunning style.England went on to win by an innings and 78 runs, a victory that saw them regain the Ashes and take an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. But Thursday saw Chris Rogers, also retiring from international duty after this match, and fellow left-handed opener Warner put on 110 for the first wicket as Australia proved they could bat responsibly in typically English conditions.Broad was fractionally too wide early on against batsmen determined not to chase the ball after their Nottingham nightmare. The first hours play saw Australia 19 without loss in 14 overs, compared to 38 for seven in 11 in 60 minutes at Trent Bridge.Australias first boundary did not arrive until the 15th over when the normally aggressive Warner pulled Ben Stokes through square leg.An increasingly assured Warner, gaining from time in the middle, went to a 76-ball fifty when he cover-drove fast bowler Steven Finn for his seventh four.England eventually separated the pair after lunch when Rogers pushed away from his body against fast bowler Mark Wood and first slip Cook held the outside edge at the second attempt.Warner, in sight of what would have been his first Test hundred in England, fell when he pushed forward to off-spinner Moeen Ali and was caught at slip by Adam Lyth, the opener swishing his bat in annoyance.- Clarke ovation -New batsman Clarke walked out to a standing ovation from the crowd as Englands players formed a guard of honour in the middle for the Australia captain. But the rousing reception did nothing to lift Clarke out of his prolonged run drought. One of Australias greatest batsmen, Clarke exited for 15 when he edged a delivery from all-rounder Ben Stokes that seamed off the pitch to wicket-keeper Jos Buttler. The captain consulted non-striker Smith and sought a review but there was no denying that Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena had made the correct decision.Smith, returning to form after his 215 and 58 in the second Test at Lords were followed by four single-figure scores in the next two Tests, cover drove Stokes for his sixth four to complete an 84-ball fifty. He then went down the pitch to drive Ali for a skimming six over mid-off.Despite the floodlights piercing the gloom, the umpires halted play at 6:31 pm local time (1731 GMT).England fielded an unchanged team after all-time leading Test wicket-taker James Anderson was again ruled out with the side injury that saw him miss the fourth Test.Australia, however, recalled all-rounder Mitchell Marsh after dropping his brother Shaun, a top-order batsman, while fast bowler Peter Siddle was selected for his first Test of the series in place of the injured Josh Hazlewood.

Greenpeace demands Swiss shut world's oldest nuclear plant

Posted:

GENEVA (AFP) - Greenpeace said Thursday it had launched legal action to demand that Switzerland shut down Beznau, the worlds oldest commercial nuclear plant, for security reasons. The plant, located in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau, near the German border, has been running for 46 years. The Beznau nuclear plant would not resist a powerful earthquake, the environmental protection group said in a statement. The organisation said it, along with the Swiss Energy Foundation and the Tri-national Nuclear Protection Association, had filed the suit on Wednesday demanding the definitive closure of the installation.Following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, Swiss authorities launched probes to determine how all of the countrys four nuclear power plants would withstand an earthquake. In July 2012, they determined that all were fit to withstand a severe earthquake, and could keep running since they posed no threat to the population or the environment. But Greenpeace and the other plaintiffs in the case said the experts calculations were based on erroneous technical norms. The organisations said they had asked in a letter that the Federal Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety (IFSN) correct its July 2012 decision and order the closure of the Beznau plant. If the IFSN maintains its decision, it should announce this publicly, Greenpeace said. The plaintiffs would then take the case to a federal administrative court, and if necessary all the way up to the supreme court, it said in a statement.Beznau, which opened in 1969 and counts two reactors that are currently undergoing repairs, became the worlds oldest nuclear plant after the 2012 closure of Britains Oldsbury reactor.Switzerland is considered to have only a moderate earthquake risk, but some 10,000 quakes that have hit the Alpine country since the 13th century, and 12 have caused significant damage, according to seismologists. The most powerful earthquake in Swiss history hit Basel in 1356, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale and levelling a large part of the city.

Slovakia to grant asylum to only 200 Christian Syrians

Posted:

BRATISLAVA (AFP) - Slovakias interior ministry said Thursday the EU member would grant asylum to only 200 Christian Syrians, as the European Union struggles to cope with a huge influx of refugees and migrants. This would be a two-year process, ministry spokeswoman Michaela Paulenova told AFP, adding that it had decided to accept only Christians because they have a great potential to seamlessly integrate into our society. She said Slovakia has few Muslims and no mosques. We have nothing against religion, nor is it discrimination. It is just an effort on Slovakias part to make this integration successful, she said.If these people come to Slovakia and subsequently leave our country, then our solidarity would be false and insincere. However, a UN official called for an inclusive approach. We urge countries not to discriminate, Babar Baloch, the Central European spokesman for the UN refugee agency told AFP.A barrage of alarming statistics this week showed that hundreds of thousands of migrants -- many fleeing war and persecution in countries like Syria -- are pouring into the 28-member EU, with no end in sight.EU border agency Frontex on Tuesday reported a record high of 107,500 migrants at EU borders last month. The EU has approved 2.4 billion euros ($2.6 billion) of funding to help member states cope with the flood of migrants.Slovakia has granted asylum to 650 people since it split from the Czech Republic in 1993, according to the interior ministry. An opinion poll released in June showed that 70 percent of Slovakias 5.4 million citizens do not want to take in refugees or migrants, a sentiment echoed by most EU member states.

Palestinian hunger striker: from obscurity to symbol of resistance

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - When Mohammed Allans friends found out he was launching a hunger strike, they knew his stubbornness meant he would not give up easily. We knew he would go until the end with it, Odai Alaweyeh told AFP of the 31-year-old Palestinian lawyer said to be a member of militant movement Islamic Jihad. He is the kind of person who, if he believes in an idea or cause, he goes until the end.Allan finally ended his hunger strike on Thursday after beginning it on June 18 to protest his detainment without trial by Israel. His decision to stop fasting came after Israels High Court suspended his detention -- and after he had twice been in a coma. The court ruled that he must remain in hospital, but left open the question of what would happen if or when his health improved. He was bedridden Thursday, but conscious and being given vitamins and minerals intravenously.Allan has been held since November in what is known as administrative detention, which allows internment without charge or trial for six-month intervals that can be renewed indefinitely.Palestinian authorities say Israel has offered to release Allan in November, at the end of his second six-month interval, but activists have continued to push for immediate freedom.Around 340 Palestinians are now held in administrative detention, according to Israeli authorities, and detainees have regularly gone on hunger strike to protest. From Einabus near Nablus in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Allan was little known only several weeks ago.But his thickly bearded face has recently become something of a new symbol of Palestinian resistance, with his photo posted on social networks and branded on posters supporting his cause, not to mention being published by newspapers and television stations. For Israeli authorities, before his arrest in November he was in contact with an Islamic Jihad terrorist with the aim of carrying out large-scale attacks. He was previously imprisoned from 2006 to 2009 for allegedly seeking to recruit suicide bombers and assisting wanted Palestinians, according to Israeli domestic security agency Shin Bet.His lawyers say he was never informed of the accusations against him during his recent detainment, and his friend Alaweyeh described him as religious, but not radical. He is stubborn, but he is a good and straightforward man, he said.Friends said he practiced criminal defence law and took on civil cases. He has also become a cause for rightwing Israelis, but for different reasons. They have argued strongly against his release, criticising judges for giving in to what they see as blackmail. Some have pushed for him to be force-fed under a controversial law passed last month that allows for the practice in certain circumstances.Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said Wednesday that Allans release would constitute a reward for his hunger strike and could encourage mass hunger strikes among security detainees.

Guinea-Bissau ruling party rejects new PM, calls for protest

Posted:

BISSAU (AFP) - Guinea Bissaus ruling party angrily rejected President Jose Mario Vazs new choice for prime minister Thursday, deepening a political crisis in the troubled west African nation a week after the government was sacked.Vaz appointed former minister Baciro Dja, 39, as prime minister a week after he fired Domingos Simoes Pereira over a series of disputes including the naming of a new army chief, sparking fresh crisis in the chronically unstable nation. The move put Vaz at loggerheads with his ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which denounced it as a constitutional coup. After Pereira was dismissed the PAIGC, of which he is the leader, renominated him as their candidate, to no avail. In a statement, the PAIGC called for a massive gathering in downtown Bissau later Thursday afternoon taking into account the current crisis hitting the country with the nomination of a new prime minister. The PAIGC will never accept a constitutional coup detat. Neither the party nor the people of Guinea-Bissau will accept the nomination of Baciro Dja, said party official Fernando Saldhana. We will demonstrate this later during our protest.A presidential decree said that after all the constitutional formalities, including consultation with political parties in parliament, Dja would replace Pereira.Dja was defence minister in the government of Carlos Gomes Junior who was overthrown in 2012 in the latest in long line of military coups to plunge Guinea Bissau into chaos. The country has barely begun to recover from the coup after elections in July last year.Dja became a minister and government spokesman for Pereira, but resigned after a dispute between the two men came to blows in June. The altercation led to Dja being suspended from the PAIGC last week.Vaz said his fallout with Pereira stemmed partly from the appointment of a new armed forces chief, a key post in the small nation known as a hub in drug trafficking between South America and Europe. In March 2009, political veteran Joao Bernardo Nino Vieira, who had led the country on and off since 1980, was assassinated by soldiers in apparent revenge for the killing of the then army chief.Vaz also raised the closure of the border with Guinea over an Ebola outbreak and cited problems of corruption and nepotism, a lack of transparency in public procurement and alleged obstruction of the judiciary. The PAIGC party, which fought for independence from Portugal, has a slender majority in the national assembly with 57 of 102 lawmakers. The latest developments in Guinea-Bissaus political crisis come as a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc was expected to arrive in the country. An official source said the aim of the visit was to enquire about the situation and help to resolve the crisis.

Golf: Back-nine blitz gives Horsey Denmark lead

Posted:

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Englands David Horsey blitzed the back nine at the Made in Denmark EPGA tournament with a 28 which helped him to an 18-hole 63 and the first-round lead on Thursday.Teeing off at the 10th, his back-nine surge, featuring an eagle at the 11th and then five consecutive birdies from the 13th, equalled the lowest nine holes on the European Tour this year.He looked set for a first-ever 59 in Tour history when he birdied the second, but the three-time European Tour winners hopes suffered when he bogeyed the fifth and missed an eagle putt on the sixth. Its always fabulous to get off to a start like that, said Horsey, who is eight under par and holds a one-shot lead over Waless Oliver Farr.I holed my third shot on the 11th from 130 yards to make eagle, then I had five birdies in a row from the 13th, so it was a very good first nine.It was a little disappointing not to make a few more on the front nine -- my back nine -- but eight-under 63 is a great score. The magic number crept into my head going down the fourth -- my 13th -- and I wouldnt say it affected me too much but I three-putted, then made a mess of the next hole. After that it was just about getting to my strategy and finishing strongly, and I managed to do that.Im pleased with how I handled myself in that situation, and you dont get many opportunities to shoot 59, so I can probably be excused for letting it creep in.Scotlands Paul Lawrie is third overnight, two shots off the lead, after a bogey-free 65 gave him his lowest round in more than two years.
