Sarfraz hopes Champions Trophy triumph ends Pakistan exile

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said he hoped his sides stunning 180-run Champions Trophy final win over arch-rivals India would be a catalyst for the full return of international cricket to his homeland.Bottom-ranked Pakistan produced a breathtaking display at Londons Oval on Sunday in the climax of a tournament featuring the worlds top eight one-day international nations. They piled up 338 for four, with Fakhar Zaman making a dashing 114 -- the left-handed openers maiden hundred in just his fourth match at this level since a debut in Pakistans group-stage win over South Africa.Mohammad Amir then reduced India to 33 for three by dismissing all the members of the title-holders top three, with Rohit Sharma out for a duck and opposing skipper Virat Kohli, the worlds leading ODI batsman, falling for just five. There was no way back for India, who collapsed to 158 all out with nearly 20 overs of the match as they suffered their heaviest defeat by runs in 129 ODIs against Pakistan. With the exception of Zimbabwes tour two years ago, Pakistan have had to play all of their home matches outside their own country since a 2009 terror attack on Sri Lankas team bus in Lahore.I hope this win will boost Pakistan cricket and hopefully all the (major) playing nations will come to Pakistan, said Sarfraz. This Champions Trophy went ahead as scheduled despite a terror attack at a pop concert in Manchester, northern England, on May 22 that killed 22 people. And it continued even after another deadly attack at London Bridge, barely two miles from The Oval on June 3 in which eight people died. But after the victims were remembered with a minutes silence by a capacity crowd, fans at The Oval were soon engrossed by an extraordinary match.I think great things went for me and my team and my country, Sarfraz told reporters after a win made all the more astounding by the fact Pakistan had suffered a 124-run defeat by India in their tournament opener at Edgbaston on June 4.Hopefully this win, everyone will remember, not just for today, not just for tomorrow, but for a very long, long time, added the wicket-keeper/batsman.Sarfraz paid tribute to the influence of a coaching staff led by Mickey Arthur, who took charge shortly before Pakistans tour of England last year, where a Test series was shared but the ODI campaign lost 4-1.They motivated us, explained Sarraz, also Pakistans captain when they beat India in the 2006 Under-19 World Cup final in Colombo. When we arrived here (in England), we were No 8 and now we are the champions, said the 30-year-old gloveman.Pakistan, who will aim for more ODI glory in England at the 2019 World Cup, looked anything but tournament winners after their opening loss. But Arthur insisted that reverse had been an aberration. We just had to keep believing ... they kept on believing, trusting their roles (and) trusting the gameplan that Saffy (Sarfraz) and I had set up.Arthur played down his own role by adding: This isnt about me and my career; its about 15 unbelievable players in that dressing room.I was telling somebody the other day that Ive had five semi-finals with South Africa and never got to a final. I got to one final with Pakistan, and eventually got a medal.Amir, whose career was nearly ended on the other side of Londons River Thames by a ban and jail sentence for his involvement in a spot-fixing scan during a 2010 Test at Lords, made a brilliant comeback after a back spasm forced him out of the semi-final victory over England.Amir was the guy that could do that for us, said Arthur. We were always thinking there was one spell in there somewhere, and the spell came thankfully at the start of a final. It says a lot about his personality ... but what I do know is that Mohammad Amir is a big-match player.

Pakistan 'pressure' got to India, says Kohli

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - India captain Virat Kohli said the pressure created by Pakistans bowlers proved too much for his title-holders to handle in a stunning 180-run Champions Trophy final defeat at The Oval. After Kohli won the toss and, surprisingly, opted to field first, Pakistan posted an imposing total of 338 for four featuring Fakhar Zamans maiden one-day international hundred, an innings where he might have been run out for one and was caught off a no-ball on three. It all left India needing to set new tournament record for a team batting second to win if they were to retain the title they won in England four years ago.Ironically, the mark they had to top was the 322 for three made by Sri Lanka in seven-wicket win over India at The Oval on June 8 -- the lone group-stage loss suffered by Kohlis side. The already considerable scoreboard pressure became impossible for India to cope with when Mohammad Amir reduced them to 33 for three. The Pakistan left-arm quicks brilliant burst of three for 16 in 28 balls saw him snare opener Rohit Sharma lbw for a duck and have Kohli, the worlds leading ODI batsman, caught off a leading edge for just five. They made us make those mistakes with the way they were bowling, creating that pressure, Kohli told reporters. If left-handed opener Fakhar rode his luck at times, he also produced an array of superb shots, notably in a first-wicket stand of 128 with Azhar Ali.When players like that get going on their day, it becomes really difficult to stop them because I think 80 percent of his shots were high-risk -- and they were all coming off, said Kohli. As a bowler and as a captain when that is happening ... sometimes you have to sit and say the guy is good enough on the day to tackle anything. We certainly tried to make them hit in areas that we felt it would be uncomfortable, but we just didnt have anything going our way in that partnership.Meanwhile, reflecting on Indias tournament as a whole, Kohli insisted: We can (still) be very proud ... and we leave here with our heads held high.Credit to everyone for standing up and showing that resilience and reaching the finals -- (but) we were outplayed in all departments. In the end ... you have to accept and admire sometimes the skill of the opposition, Kohli added sportingly.

Amir, Fakhar star as Pakistan rout India for Champions Trophy title

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Mohammad Amir removed all of Indias top three as Pakistan routed their arch-rivals by 180 runs in an astonishing Champions Trophy final at The Oval on Sunday.Title-holders India, set 339 to win, collapsed to 33 for three and 54 for five against a Pakistan side they had thrashed by 124 runs in their tournament opener at Edgbaston on June 4.They were eventually dismissed for 158 in reply to Pakistans 338 for four, which featured Fakhar Zamans 114, the left-handed openers maiden one-day international hundred coming in just his fourth match at this level.Amir, who missed Pakistans eight-wicket semi-final win over England with a back spasm, finished with three wickets for 16 runs in six overs. But it was fellow paceman Hasan Ali, the player of the tournament having kick-started Pakistans revival in their group win over South Africa, who ended the match with more than 19 overs left when he had Jasprit Bumrah caught by gleeful captain and wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.Left-arm fast bowler Amir, whose career was almost ended on the other side of Londons River Thames by a ban and jail term he received for his part in a spot-fixing scam during a 2010 Test against England at Lords, was superb. He dismissed three of the worlds top (ODI) batsmen in Rohit Sharma (nought), India captain Virat Kohli (five) and Shikhar Dhawan (21) in a stunning new-ball spell. Its been an up and down ride for us but Im just so proud of the boys, Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur told Sky Sports. We dusted ourselves off after the defeat to India at Edgbaston and came back superbly, added the South African after Pakistans first major global tournament success since they won the 2009 World Twenty20 in England. An elated Sarfraz added: After the India match when we lost in the group stage, I told my boys the tournament hadnt finished yet.Fakhar is a great impact player, he played like a champion batsman today. Amir bowled brilliantly today but all my bowlers bowled really well. This was Pakistans largest margin of victory, by runs, in 129 ODIs against India, surpassing their 159-run success at Delhi in 2005.Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli have been in tremendous form so I was looking for early wickets - and I did it, said Amir.Kohli accepted his side had been second best as he acknowledged Pakistans amazing tournament. They outplayed us, they were more intense and passionate on the day, he said.Amir struck just three balls into Indias reply when, after bowling two outswingers to Sharma, he had him lbw with an inswinger. Then one ball after Kohli, the worlds leading ODI batsman, was dropped at slip off Amir, the bowler had him caught at point by Shadab Khan. The collapse continued when left-handed opener Dhawan was caught behind off Amir.India then lost two wickets for no runs in four balls to be 54 for five inside 14 overs.Yuvraj Singh was lbw to leg-spinner Shadab and former captain MS Dhoni, the hero of many an India rescue mission, holed out in the deep.Pakistan, who had lost all three of their previous matches against India in the knockout stages of International Cricket Council tournaments and started this event the lowest ranked of the eight teams involved, were now on the brink of a sensational win.Hardik Pandya cheered India fans in a capacity crowd as he hit three sixes off succesive balls to bring up a dashing fifty. But he only looked to be delaying the inevitable and a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja saw him run out for 76.Earlier, Fakhar rode his luck after Kohli sent Pakistan into bat at a sun-drenched Oval.He would have been run out for one if Kedar Jadhavs throw from cover had hit and he was caught behind off a Bumrah no-ball on three.Fakhar, the man-of-the-match, shared an opening stand of 128 with Azhar Ali (59).But the run-out Pakistans openers had threatened arrived when Fakhars failure to respond to Azhars call saw the former ODI captain fall by a distance. The 27-year-old Fakhar, however, put the setback behind him to complete a 92-ball hundred when he swept star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for his 12th four.He was eventually out when he sliced medium-pacer Pandya to Jadeja, running back from point. But veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeezs quickfire 57 not out, including three sixes, then took Pakistan well beyond 300.

Mali resort attacked by 'suspected jihadists'

Posted:

BAMAKO (AFP) - A tourist resort popular with Westerners in the Malian capital was under attack on Sunday, according to witnesses and an AFP journalist.Malian troops and soldiers from Frances Bakhane counter-terrorist force headed to the site on the edge of Bamako, where nearby residents reported hearing shots fired while smoke billowed into the air. There was no information immediately available on any casualties. The west African country has been battling a jihadist insurgency for several years, with Islamist fighters roaming the north and centre of Mali.In November 2015, gunmen took guests and staff hostage at the luxury Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako in a siege that left at least 20 people dead, including 14 foreigners. The attack was claimed by Al-Qaedas North African affiliate Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).A state of emergency has been renewed several times since the Radisson Blu attack, most recently in April when it was extended for six months. In 2012 Malis north fell under the control of jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda who hijacked an ethnic Tuareg-led rebel uprising, though the Islamists were largely ousted by a French-led military operation in January 2013.But jihadists have mounted numerous attacks on civilians and the army, as well as on French and UN forces still stationed there.
