NASA discovers 10 new Earth-size exoplanets

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - NASA revealed Monday 10 new rocky, Earth-sized planets that could potentially have liquid water and support life. The Kepler mission team released a survey of 219 potential exoplanets -- planets outside of our solar system -- that had been detected by the space observatory launched in 2009 to scan the Milky Way galaxy.Ten of the new discoveries were orbiting their suns at a distance similar to Earths orbit around the sun, the so-called habitable zone that could potentially have liquid water and sustain life.Kepler has already discovered 4,034 potential exoplanets, 2,335 of which have been confirmed by other telescopes as actual planets. The 10 new Earth-size planets bring the total to 50 that exist in habitable zones around the galaxy. This carefully-measured catalog is the foundation for directly answering one of astronomys most compelling questions -- how many planets like our Earth are in the galaxy? said Susan Thompson, a Kepler research scientist and lead author of the latest study. The latest findings were released at the Fourth Kepler and K2 science conference being held this week at NASAs Ames research center in California. The Kepler telescope detects the presence of planets by registering minuscule drops in a stars brightness that occurs when a planet crosses in front of it, a movement known as a transit. The findings were compiled from data gathered during the first four years of the mission, which scientists processed to determine the size and composition of the planets observed. The scientists found that the newly discovered planets tended to fall into two distinct categories -- smaller, rocky planets that are usually around 75 percent bigger than Earth, and much larger, gaseous planets similar in size to Neptune.NASA said the latest catalog is the most complete and detailed survey of potential exoplanets yet compiled. The telescope has studied some 150,000 stars in the Cygnus constellation, a survey which NASA said is now complete. The Kepler data set is unique, as it is the only one containing a population of these near Earth-analogs -- planets with roughly the same size and orbit as Earth, said Mario Perez of NASAs Astrophysics Division. Understanding their frequency in the galaxy will help inform the design of future NASA missions to directly image another Earth. The mission ran into technical problems in 2013 when mechanisms used to turn the spacecraft failed, but the telescope has continued searching for potentially habitable planets as part of its K2 project. As of next year, NASA will continue its scan of the galaxy using Keplers successor, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS, which will spend two years observing the 200,000 brightest nearby stars for Earth-like worlds.Scientists also hope the James Webb Space telescope, which will replace the Hubble telescope in 2018, will be able to detect the molecular make-up of atmospheres of exoplanets, including the possibility of finding signatures of potential life forms.

Afghan pride as Test status beckons

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - Afghanistans fairytale rise in world cricket could this week see them acquire coveted Test status, a massive boost for a nation long divided by war and riven by ethnic rivalries. No longer rank minnows, Asghar Stanikzais team are up for consideration following their victories over Ireland in the Intercontinental Cup in March, paving the way for their potential entry into crickets elite. Both Afghanistan and Ireland are bidding to become the 11th and 12th nations to join the Test club, nearly two decades after their immediate predecessors Bangladesh, if confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) at a meeting in London.A committee is working inside the cricket board, and we will work on our proposal to present it to the ICC in the future, and hopefully full membership and Test status are on the way, chairman of the Afghan cricket board, Atef Mashal told AFP during a recent interview. We can not give any time frame at the moment, it is upon the ICC, they will decide when to give Afghanistan the Test status, and it is not in our hands, Mashal said.Unlike the sports other major players, Afghanistan was never a colony of the British Empire.Instead many Afghans first contact with the sport took place during the 1980s and 1990s, as refugees who had fled to Pakistan to escape the Soviet invasion.Cricket struggled under the hardline Islamist Taliban, who viewed sports as a distraction from religious duties -- and famously shaved the heads of a visiting Pakistani football team as punishment for wearing shorts. But it has become hugely popular in the country since the regime was toppled in a US-led invasion in 2001.Recent successes, particularly in last years ICC World Twenty20, have further raised the countrys profile.Spinners Rashid Khan, who idolises former Pakistan international Shahid Afridi, and Mohammad Nabi both made their mark in the Indian Premier League.Khan was sixth-highest wicket-taker in his debut IPL with 17 scalps, and the pair broke into the top 10 of the ICC one-day international bowling rankings during the just-concluded tour of the West Indies.Their former batting coach and former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif said a place among the Test nations was well deserved and would benefit them in the future.Afghanistan deserves Test status because their performances are good. Once they get to play Tests, more and more players will come forward just like happened in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- Kenya suffered because they were not awarded, he told AFP.I think it will be the ICCs best decision of the century, he added.Khan and Nabi are both Pashtuns, the countrys dominant ethnic group with deep ties to Pashtuns across the border in Pakistan. In years gone by Afghanistan maintained a younger sibling relationship with its eastern neighbour.Kabir Khan, a former Pakistan international, coached the team from 2008-10 and oversaw their stratospheric rise from Division 5 od world cricket to ODI status.More recently, however, the team has followed broader geopolitical currents and pivoted toward India, Pakistans historic rival.Last year, Afghanistans national team shifted its base from Sharjah in United Arab Emirates to Noida, Delhi, while Indias former batsman Lalchand Rajput replaced Pakistans Inzamam-ul-Haq as their national team coach. There are nevertheless questions about how well Afghanistan will do in the games longest format.Bangladesh famously floundered for their first decade while New Zealand took 26 years to win their first Test.Pakistani cricket writer Ahmer Naqvi, said it was important to be patient. For any team to make its mark, it takes a while to really get a hang of it no matter how good you are at the shorter versions. But, he added: Its extremely important to provide Test status for Afghanistan and perhaps Ireland, because it is also a virtuous circle of greater funding, organisation and structure.Currently, all of the national teams players are Pashtuns from the eastern provinces -- Nangarhar, Kunar, Logar, Kunduz and Paktia.Tajiks comprise the countrys second biggest ethnicity and are more likely to participate in football where they dominate the national team. They do participate at club level but none have yet broken through to the top -- a crucial test in country that has long struggled with ethnic tensions. But for now, many are pleased to watch their team soar.Shabir Ahmad, a 24-year-old Tajik tailor in Kabul said: When our team is playing, we forget our pain, bomb blasts and explosions in our country. The game of cricket does not belong to one particular ethnic group but to the entire Afghanistan.

Ireland eye end to long wait for Test status

BELFAST (AFP) - They have beaten West Indies, England and Pakistan and now Cricket Ireland are targetting London on Thursday when they expect to be given Test match status by the International Cricket Council. In February, the ICC agreed in principle that this weeks meeting in London had the potential to include additional Full Members (Ireland and Afghanistan subject to both meeting Membership criteria).Cricket Ireland understand there have been no hiccups since and they stand ready to take their place alongside the games established powers. It is all a far cry from the years when the highlight of Irelands season was the visit for a one-off match by the touring Test team to England or, in alternate years, a two-day game at Lords against MCC, invariably made up of Minor County players. The old Irish Cricket Union was founded in 1855 -- Phoenix Cricket Club, founded 25 years earlier, is one of the oldest in the British Isles -- but it was not until more than a century later that the Ireland team first made the rest of the cricket world take notice. On July 2 1969, Ireland dismissed the West Indies for just 25 at Sion Mills in a match recorded for all time by television. It has gone into folklore that the West Indies, who had flown in the night before, after the conclusion of the Lords Test, had immediately availed themselves of some typically generous Irish hospitality. But whatever the truth of that, they were bundled out in 25.3 remarkable overs.Ireland knocked off the runs for the loss of one wicket, but with the game over so quickly, the teams agreed to play on and West Indies even had a second innings, reaching a more respectable 78 for four, after Ireland had declared on 125 for eight.Ireland were admitted to Englands 60-over one-day competition, the Gillette Cup, in 1980 and almost made a dramatic impact, reducing Middlesex to 67 for five when the county replied to Irelands modest 102.But it was to be another 17 years before Ireland claimed their first victory in the competition, ironically in a home match against Middlesex, when the late South Africa captain Hansie Cronje was Irelands overseas professional.By that stage, Ireland had been given Associate Membership of the ICC and after three failed attempts to qualify for the World Cup, they used home advantage in 2005 to reach the finals in the West Indies in 2007.It took only two matches for them to make their mark on the world stage. After tying with Zimbabwe in their opening fixture, they turned up on St Patricks Day to see a green pitch at Sabina Park for their match against Pakistan, and a sea of green in the crowd as thousands of Ireland fans took over the ground.Ireland bowled out the number-four ranked team for 132 and won by seven wickets in what was Bob Woolmers last match as Pakistan coach.Tragically, the former England batsman was found dead in his hotel room the following morning. When, three weeks later, Ireland beat Bangladesh in Barbados they joined the ODI rankings table and have been there ever since. The celebrations back home in Ireland after the Pakistan win were nothing compared to those four years later when England were toppled in Bangalore, the day Kevin OBrien became a world famous name with a 50-ball century -- still the fastest ever in a World Cup -- as Ireland chased down Englands 327.The 2015 World Cup finals saw Ireland claim two more Full Member scalps as Phil Simmons inspired his adopted team against both his native West Indies and then Zimbabwe, each time with totals over 300.Given all these achievements, its little wonder Ireland feel ready to be put on a level playing field with the other 10 Full Members.

Shah Rukh Khan buys South Africa T20 franchise

LONDON (AFP) - Indian movie star Shah Rukh Khan added a third Twenty20 franchise team to his collection when he was named as one of the owners in the new eight-team South African Global League on Monday. The Bollywood leading man expanded his established Knight Riders Brand with the purchase of the Cape Town franchise to add to the teams he already owns in Kolkata and Trinidad. There was a further link to the Indian Premier League, the lucrative Twenty20 competition that has sparked similar tournaments in the Caribbean, Australia, Bangladesh and Pakistan too.GMR Sports, the holding company that controls the IPL Delhi Daredevils, purchased the Johannesburg franchise. Two Pakistan Super League owners, Fawad Rana of the Lahore Qalandar and Javed Afridi of the Peshawar Zalmi, have bought franchises in Durban and Benoni respectively.Meanwhile Hong Kong businessman Sushil Kumar bought the Bloemfontein franchise, with Dubais Ajay Sethi taking up the Port Elizabeth franchise. Two of the franchises will be South African owned, with businessman Osman Osman now in charge of the Pretoria franchise and Brimstone, an investment company, now having the Stellenbosch franchise as part of its portfolio.Shah himself was not present at the launch in London, a location that meant the South Africa marquee players attached to each of the eight teams could attend, with the Proteas currently on tour in England. We are thrilled by the international mix of owners and the passion and excitement that was clearly demonstrated during the bidding process by them and the marquee players, said Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat. The South Africa marquee players are Hashim Amla (Durban), Quinton de Kock (Benoni), AB de Villiers (Pretoria), Faf du Plessis (Stellenbosch), JP Duminy (Cape Town), David Miller (Bloemfontein), Kagiso Rabada (Johannesburg) and Imran Tahir (Port Elizabeth).Meanwhile the likes of South Africa-born England batsman Kevin Pietersen and former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum are also set to be two of the eight international marquee players involved. They, together with the current England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan and fellow batsman Jason Roy, as well as Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard (all West Indies) plus Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga are all set to enter into a mini-draft with the highest bidding franchise owner having first pick and the rest following the same process.McCullum caused an unintentional moment of humour at the launch when he described himself as a T20 mercenary, with event host Alan Wilkins, the cricket broadcaster, jumping in to say ambassador. The November-December timeframe for the tournament means leading Australian players are likely to be unavailable because of a clash with their home season, although that could change if theres no resolution to their bitter pay dispute with Cricket Australia. No India players are expected to take part either but more than 400 cricketers have registered their interest, with a draft scheduled for August.

Google steps up efforts to block extremism, following Facebook

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Google is stepping up its efforts to block extremist and terrorism-related videos over its platforms, using a combination of technology and human monitors. The measures announced Sunday come on the heels of similar efforts unveiled by Facebook last week, and follow a call by the Group of Seven leaders last month for the online giants to do more to curb online extremist content. While we and others have worked for years to identify and remove content that violates our policies, the uncomfortable truth is that we, as an industry, must acknowledge that more needs to be done, said a blog post by Google general counsel Kent Walker.Walker said Google would devote more resources to apply artificial intelligence to suppress YouTube videos used in support of extremist actions. This can be challenging: a video of a terrorist attack may be informative news reporting if broadcast by the BBC, or glorification of violence if uploaded in a different context by a different user, he said.We will now devote more engineering resources to apply our most advanced machine learning research to train new content classifiers to help us more quickly identify and remove extremist and terrorism-related content.Google acknowledged that technology alone cannot solve the problem, and said that it would greatly increase the number of independent experts on the watch for videos that violate its guidelines.Machines can help identify problematic videos, but human experts still play a role in nuanced decisions about the line between violent propaganda and religious or newsworthy speech, Walker said.Google plans to add 50 non-government organizations to the 63 it already works with to filter inappropriate content. This allows us to benefit from the expertise of specialized organizations working on issues like hate speech, self-harm, and terrorism, Walker wrote. We will also expand our work with counter-extremist groups to help identify content that may be being used to radicalize and recruit extremists.A similar initiative was announced last week by Facebook, which earlier this year said it was adding 3,000 staff to track and remove violent video content.Googles Walker said the online giant would start taking a tougher stance on videos that do not clearly violate our policies, including videos that contain inflammatory religious or supremacist content. He said YouTube would expand its role in counter-radicalization efforts using an approach that harnesses the power of targeted online advertising to reach potential recruits for extremist groups and offers video content that debunks terrorist recruiting messages.

Youthful Germany squeeze past Australia

Posted:

SOCHI (AFP) - A youthful Germany side weathered a second-half fightback by Australia to open their Confederations Cup campaign with a 3-2 win over the Socceroos on Monday in Sochi.Goals by Lars Stindl and Leon Goretzka, either side of a penalty by Julian Draxler, saw Germany home to leave them second in Group B behind Chile, who they face in Kazan on Thursday.Celtic midfielder Tommy Rogic had made it 1-1 in the first half and Tomi Juric added Australias second after the break from a goal that was allowed to stand despite a suggestion of handball leading to a review from the video assistant referee. The Socceroos then had a string of late chances to equalise, but Germany held out.First and foremost, I am happy we picked up the three points, beamed Germany coach Joachim Loew, who punched the air at the final whistle. We played well in the first half -- the only bad thing was that we were only 2-1 up at the break. We lost our way after 60 minutes and need to work on retaining our stability, but a lot of things worked well.Australia next face Cameroon, who lost 2-0 to Chile in their opening game, in Saint Petersburg on Thursday with both teams needing a win in their bid to reach the semi-finals.Its disappointing, we were barely clinging on in the first half, admitted Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou. The second half was better, we composed ourselves and got back into things. Its a loss and the loss falls on me, its my responsibility.- Empty seats -===============Much had been made before kick-off of Germany bringing a young squad and their starting line-up had just 138 international appearances between them. The arrival of the world champions in Sochi failed to excite local fans and only 28,605 of the Fisht Stadiums available 47,700 seats were filled. Those who did turn out saw Germany waste no time in taking the lead with just five minutes gone. After Goretzka went close, winger Julian Brandt cut the ball back for Stindl, who slotted home his first goal for his country on only his third international appearance. With Bayer Leverkusens Brandt causing mayhem down the right flank, striker Sandro Wagner had two clear chances, a diving header and then a shot which both went wide.Australia barely escaped their own half in the opening 30 minutes, but they eventually started to build some momentum.Defender Trent Sainsbury wasted a golden chance when he headed Aaron Mooys free-kick wide with the goal at his mercy.Their breakthrough came when a Rogic shot was blocked, but the Celtic midfielder slammed home the rebound to pull the Socceroos level on 41 minutes. It was not to last. When Queens Park Rangers midfielder Massimo Luongo scythed down Goretzka in the area three minutes later, Germany captain Draxler drilled home the resulting penalty to make it 2-1 at the break. And Germany extended their lead with a copybook move on 48 minutes.Brandt combined with Joshua Kimmich, who floated a cross over the defence for Goretzka, and he took it in his stride and rifled home.Australia made it 3-2 when Juric tapped home from close range after Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno failed to hold a deflected Rogic shot on 56 minutes. With the Germans screaming for handball, the decision to give the goal was referred to the video assistant referee.Replays showed the ball striking Jurics arm before Leno saved, but the goal was allowed to stand.Australia kept up the pressure after that as substitutes James Troisi and Robbie Kruse, as well as Juric, all tested Leno in the final quarter. At the other end, German substitute Timo Werner hit the post after holding off two defenders and beating Maty Ryan.Veteran midfielder Tim Cahill, now 37, came on towards the end for his 98th cap, but the Socceroos all-time top scorer failed to add to his tally of 48 goals.

Muslim teen killed after leaving Virginia mosque

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A tight-knit Muslim community in the suburbs of Washington was in shock Monday after a 17-year-old girl was apparently beaten to death and dumped in a pond following late-night prayers at the local mosque.Police in Fairfax County, Virginia, have charged a 22-year-old local man, Darwin Martinez Torres, with the teenagers killing, and said on Twitter they were NOT investigating this murder as a hate crime. But social media lit up with expressions of anger over the crime, which follows a series of deadly incidents targeting Muslims in North America, and condolence over the sudden, seemingly random death of a young girl. While the teen has yet to be officially named by police, friends and worshippers at the mosque in Sterling, known as the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, identified her as Nabra Hassanen, from the nearby town of Reston. The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday as a group of young Muslims were walking back from the town center plaza after midnight prayers at the mosque, according to accounts by police and worshippers.A man who appeared to be drunk got out of his car with a bat, one of the youths, Tasneem Khan, wrote on social media. All of the youths with the exception of Hassanen managed to run back to the mosque upon seeing the assailant.Arsalan Iftikhar, an international human rights lawyer and commentator who attended the prayer service, said the teen was apparently beaten to death by this man.Fairfax County police spokesman Don Gotthardt told AFP the assault is not being treated as a hate crime at this stage because there is no information connecting the victims faith or religion to the crime.Still, on Twitter, many people expressed incredulity.Anyone want to explain to me why this isnt being investigated as a hate crime? I am disgusted and so very saddened by this, wrote someone with the handle @MaisieRae.We need strong leaders in this country condemning hate crimes or we need new leaders who will, added @paulshread.Last days of RamadanA vigil for the slain girl has been scheduled for Wednesday evening in her home town of Reston. The attack occurred during the waning days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when observant Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. In North America, Ramadan is due to end with Eid al-Fitr celebrations starting Saturday. The teens had apparently gone out to eat at a restaurant before starting their fast at sunrise. Hassanen was reported missing around 4:00 am and the remains were found at a nearby pond around 3:00 pm.Police would not immediately confirm the nature of the assault and the exact manner of her death, pending a review by the chief medical examiner.A widely distributed Snapchat photographic montage showed Hassanen, who wore a Muslim veil, smiling and sporting a golden nose ring.Last month, two men were fatally stabbed in Portland, Oregon as they intervened to stop a man hurling anti-Muslim slurs at two teenage girls, one of whom was wearing a hijab. Another man who tried to halt the attack was also wounded. In Quebec, six worshippers were shot dead in an attack on a mosque in January.

Pakistan found two heroes in Fakhar, Mohammad Amir: Kumar Sangakkara

WEB DESK - After Pakistan crushed India in the finals of ICC Champions Trophy, accolades came for men in green from all corners as the outstanding achievemnet was hailed in countless words by cricket fans, stars, celebrities and former greats.Former Sri Lankan skipper and legend Kumar Sangakkara lauded the efforts of Pakistan during the champions trophy campaign as he expressed in a a column for the ICC that Pakistan found two heroes on the day of the final. One raw and brave, the other experienced and highly-skilled. Fakhar and Amir were brilliant, Sanga wrote.Opener Fakhar Zaman, playing in just his fourth ODI, emphasised better than anyone this resurgent belief, fighting off pre-match nerves, inexperience and illness. Like many of his youthful colleagues, he did not carry the psychological scars of previous failures to arch-rivals India and it showed, he added. While paying homage to the jaw-dropping spell of Mohammad Amir the former Sri Lankan skipper expressed, “The in-swinging delivery to get Rohit Sharma was perfect and against Kohli he was undaunted by a dropped catch at first slip, nailing his man at the backward point immediately after. A few overs later he found the outside edge of Shikar Dhawan with a probing, bouncing delivery.”Sngakkara also admired Fakhar Zaman for his marvellous show during the final as he wrote:Zaman batted freely and aggressively. Mixing attacking boundary options and smart strike rotation, he anchored the Pakistan total with the most important innings of his life.
