Bairstow seals England rout of South Africa

Posted:

SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) - Jonny Bairstow made a dashing 60 not out as England thrashed South Africa by nine wickets in the first Twenty20 international at Southampton on Wednesday.England, set just 143 to win, reached their target for the loss of only one wicket with 33 balls left.Opener Alex Hales was 47 not out, his unbroken second-wicket stand with Bairstow worth 98 runs. But the foundations for a victory which put England 1-0 up in this three-match series were laid by their bowlers. They restricted South Africa to 142 for three after Proteas skipper AB de Villiers won the toss.De Villiers made 65 not out and Farhaan Behardien an unbeaten 64 in an innings where fast bowler Mark Wood took two for 36.The fourth-wicket pairs unbroken partnership was worth 110 runs after they came together with South Africa 32 for three -- which represented a recovery after they had slumped to seven for two.But South Africas total still looked short of a competitive score on what is usually a good batting pitch.England new-ball duo David Willey and Wood both struck with their opening deliveries.Left-arm pacemans Willeys very first ball of the match saw Jon-Jon Smuts out for a golden duck when he pushed forward tentatively and played on.Wood then followed suit when Reeza Hendricks pulled his first ball to a leaping Willey at mid-wicket.Left-hander David Miller advanced down the pitch to drive Willey for six but fell for nine when caught behind off Wood.Spinners Liam Dawson (four overs for 17 runs) and debutant Mason Crane (four overs for 24) both bowled tidily on their Hampshire home ground.Leg-spinner Cranes lone really bad ball was his last delivery, a full toss which de Villiers pulled for four. That was South Africas first boundary for five-and-a-half overs.De Villiers, stepping well outside off stump, slog-swept Willey to complete a 49-ball fifty.Behardien pulled Wood for four for his fifty and next ball hit him straight back over his head for six.Jason Roy, returning to England duty after being dropped for their Champions Trophy semi-final defeat by eventual title-winners Pakistan in Cardiff last week, was in good touch. After managing just 51 runs in eight one-day international innings so far this season, Roy made 92 for Surrey in their One-Day Cup semi-final win over Worcestershire last week.On Wednesday, he struck three sixes -- the best a drive off left-arm quick Wayne Parnell. But on 28 he missed an ambitious reverse-sweep against medium-pacer Andile Phehlukwayo and was plumb lbw.Bairstow, however, kept the runs coming with big sixes off leg-spinner Imran Tahir and debutant left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.South Africas day was summed up when Bairstow, on 37, drove Tahir to long-on only for Behardien to drop a routine catch, with the ball going for four.Tahirs next delivery was duly smashed for six by Bairstow, who went to a 29-ball fifty by cover-driving Shamsi for four. The series continues at the Taunton headquarters of southwest county Somerset on Friday before concluding in Cardiff on Sunday.

Greats lament 'sad day' as Kohli topples Kumble

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Batting great Sunil Gavaskar lamented a sad day after Anil Kumble stepped down as India coach over a rift with captain Virat Kohli, leaving the hotseat vacant once again.Kumble said Tuesday his position was untenable after Kohli questioned his leadership style and told the Indian board he had reservations about the spin legend extending his one-year stay.Since Duncan Fletcher left in March 2015, India, currently the worlds top Test team, have struggled for stability with Ravi Shastri and Sanjay Bangar both taking on temporary roles before Kumbles reign.I have very little knowledge about the differences between Virat and Anil. But it is a really sad day for Indian cricket, Gavaskar told NDTV.India have won everything since the time Anil took over, he added. I cant see Anil doing much wrong in one year. Differences (can) happen in any team but see the results.India suffered a humiliating defeat to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday, but Kumble also helped them reclaim the number-one Test ranking and maintained an unblemished record in five Test series.Former India captain and coach Bishan Singh Bedi also signalled his disappointment, tweeting: If theres more intelligent/committed Crkt analyser than @anilkumble 1074 on Indn horizon (we are) ignorant reallyKumble, 46, had already appeared headed for the exit after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) advertised for a new coach last month, although he was an automatic candidate.Former India opener Virender Sehwag and Australias Tom Moody are reported to be among the possible replacements for Kumble, whose contract ran out after the Champions Trophy.Sehwag, who seems to be the frontrunner for the job, believes it would be tough for anyone to match Kumbles success as coach. The way this Indian team has performed under his coaching, I doubt whether anybody else will be able to replicate his success, Sehwag told UC News, an online data provider.I dont know about his coaching style but as a player, as an individual and as a senior he is just brilliant, said Sehwag, who played under Kumbles Test captaincy.Sambit Bal, editor in chief of ESPNCricinfo.com, said the manner of Kumbles exit set an unwelcome precedent for Indian cricket.I think that sets a bad precedent really... its really a case where the BCCI has backed the captain over the coach, he said. The message is sent out to the next coach: fall into line or else, added Bal.A three-man panel of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who picked Kumble in June last year, will deliberate over Kumbles replacement. As well as Sehwag and Moody, reports say other candidates are Englishman Richard Pybus, who has coached Pakistan and Bangladesh, former India manager Lalchand Rajput and ex-paceman Dodda Ganesh. An Indian Express column said the pressures of modern cricket demanded a strong chain of command.Giving veto powers to the captain and players over coaches sits at odds with the direction cricket is moving in, the column said.Indian cricket has once again endorsed that captain is more important than a coach, it added.

Oil, gas giants could waste trillions in a 2C world: report

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Thirty percent of investments planned by oil and gas majors over the next decade could be wasted if the world economy retools to cap global warming at two degrees Celsius, researchers warned Wednesday. The 2C (3.6 degree Fahrenheit) target is the cornerstone of the 196-nation Paris Agreement, inked in 2015.Projects worth $2.3 trillion (two trillion euros) could become unprofitable as energy shifts toward renewables and if fossil fuel prices stagnate, according to an analysis of investment budgets for 69 publically traded oil and gas companies. Some players will be more exposed than others, said the report, Two degrees of separation: Transition risk for upstream oil and gas in a low-carbon world.Up to 50 percent of ExxonMobils proposed capital expenditure to 2025, for example, is allocated to uneconomical projects likely to disappoint shareholders, the researchers concluded.Shell, Chevron, Total and Eni were found to have put 30 to 40 percent of future spending at risk, about average for the companies examined. At the other end of the scale, 14 companies -- including state-owned giant Saudi Aramco -- were seen as well-aligned with the 2C scenario. This report is a real game-changer for the future of corporate-investor engagement, said Nathan Fabian, director of policy & research at PRI, a UN-backed network of investors who oversee $62 trillion (56 trillion euros) in assets.Investors in oil and gas companies have been in the dark about their exposure to climate risk -- now they will be able to confront companies with precise information.PRI produced the report in collaboration with Carbon Tracker, a financial think tank that assesses the impact of climate change on capital markets and investment.Major energy companies are already under growing pressure from investors to explain how global warming -- and the shift to a low-carbon economy -- will affect their bottom lines.Last month, three-fifths of ExxonMobil shareholders defied the board and voted for the company to report annually on how new technology and 2C policies will affect business and investment plans.- Off the table -=================Weeks earlier, a majority of Occidental Petroleum shareholders called for similar measures. There are clear signs that oil demand could peak in the early 2020s, so companies need to start taking options that would come onstream then off the table, said James Leaton, Carbon Trackers research director.Sticking with the growth-at-all-costs scenario just doesnt add up for shareholder value when policy and technology are heading in the opposite direction. The move towards corporate transparency around climate issues extends beyond the fossil fuel industry. On June 29, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures -- initiated at the COP21 Paris climate summit by former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney -- will issue final recommendations. The task force has already called for the disclosure of climate-related impacts and risks, and strategies to confront them -- backed by metrics and targets. The Carbon Tracker report on investment risk in the fossil fuel industry looks at oil and gas production to 2035, and capital investment to 2025.The proposed projects would generate 380 billion tonnes of CO2 -- 60 percent from oil, 40 percent from gas -- by 2035, exceeding the fossil fuel carbon budget consistent with a 2C cap on global warming.Companies will need to knock off at least 60 billion tonnes of that total for the world to have a 50/50 shot at a 2C world. In a joint statement, institutional investors backing the report -- including Britains Legal & General Investment Management, Dutch pension fund PGGM, and the French fund FRR -- cautioned against the risk of stranded assets. Some companies have to reconsider their business strategy, they said.ExxonMobil, Total, Eni and Shell are all involved in the single biggest uneconomic asset flagged by the report, the $33.5 billion (30 billion euro) Kashagan Phase 2 project in Kazakhstan. Analysts estimate it would require oil prices of at least $110 a barrel to break even.London Brent crude closed at just over $45 (40 euros) a barrel on June 21.

German prosecutors investigate teenager for shooting toy gun at Thai king

(Reuters) - German prosecutors said on Wednesday they were investigating a 14-year-old boy suspected of shooting plastic bullets from a toy gun at the King of Thailand who was cycling near Munich late one evening earlier this month. The king was not hurt. The unidentified youth, together with a 13-year-old who is too young to be investigated, is suspected of having fired the gun from a garden or house window at a group of cyclists that included King Maha Vajiralongkorn, a regular visitor to Bavaria, and his entourage.A toy pistol, a soft air pistol, was used. First it was fired at a group of cyclists, one of whom was the King of Thailand, said Thomas Rauscher, prosecutor in the southern town of Landshut. Neither the king nor any of his entourage was hurt.Prosecutors said the kings household said they had no interest in charges being brought in the case.Reuters was unable to contact the youth, who has not been identified, or representatives for him.It was not clear who had drawn the incident to the attention of the police. Representatives at the Thai Embassy in Berlin were not available for comment. The Royal Household in Bangkok did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.Later, more shots were allegedly fired at the kings car in the small, historic town of Erding, some 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Munich, said the prosecutor. The 14-year-old is being investigated for attempted grievous bodily harm and it was unclear whether the boys knew who they were shooting at, said the prosecutor. His office will decide whether to charge the teenager with a criminal offence. The incident took place on June 10 at about 11 p.m. (2100 GMT).The king ascended the throne in December after the death in October of his father, the revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who had reigned for seven decades. His coronation is likely to take place at the end of the year, a deputy prime minister in Thailand has said.

Outcry after Turkish woman assaulted for 'wearing shorts in Ramadan'

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - A Turkish man assaulted a young woman on an Istanbul bus for wearing shorts during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, images showed Wednesday, sparking a furore among womens rights activists.University student Asena Melisa Saglam was travelling on the bus on June 14 when the man seated behind her struck her in the face, images published by Turkish media showed. She responded by chasing after him but he grabbed her and slung her to the back of the bus before running out of the vehicle.Saglam said that throughout the journey the man had been verbally harassing her by saying she should not be wearing shorts during Ramadan. The man was detained shortly afterwards but following questioning -- in which he reportedly said he had been provoked -- he was set free, causing a new outcry. The release of the attacker is a threat to all women, the womens rights organisation We Will Stop Femicide Platform wrote on Twitter. We will wear whatever we want outside. We will not give up our freedoms.Following the outcry, an order was given to re-arrest the man. It later emerged that he had been held in jail since Sunday on separate accusations of committing a tax crime and is also wanted for drugs offences.Saglam, 21, was quoted by the Hurriyet daily as saying: From the moment I sat down he was making these remarks you dress like this during Ramadan? You should feel ashamed to be dressed like that. She said she put on her headphones and ignored him but then he got up, hitting her so the side of her jaw hit the bus window.Opponents of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuse the government of presiding over a creeping Islamisation of Turkey which has undermined the secular principles of the state set up by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk that enshrined womens rights. But the government insists that while it has given women the right to wear the Islamic headscarf at university, school and even in the army this has not impeded the freedom of Turkish women to dress as they please. A man named Abdullah Cakiroglu who kicked a Turkish woman who was wearing shorts last year in a similar case is currently on trial and faces nine years in jail if convicted. The incident comes amid continued alarm over the levels of violence against women in Turkey, which the authorities admit is unacceptably highAccording to the Platform, 173 women were murdered in the first five months of 2017 and 328 for the whole of 2016.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies have drawn up a list of demands to be presented to Qatar, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Wednesday, amid a regional diplomatic crisis. We hope the list of demands will soon be presented to Qatar and will be reasonable and actionable, Tillerson said, two weeks after Riyadh imposed an embargo on its neighbor. On Tuesday, Tillersons spokeswoman had declared Washington mystified that Saudi Arabia had yet to produce a clear list of demands after accusing Qatar of sponsoring terrorism.Washingtons top diplomat has been working his telephone intensively in recent days trying to defuse a stand-off that has put key US allies at loggerheads with one another.President Donald Trump has signalled sympathy for Riyadhs position, alleging that gas-rich Qatar has in the past provided high level support for extremists. But the biggest US air base in the Middle East is in Qatar, and US diplomats are keen to de-escalate the crisis and unite the region in the battle against the Islamic State group. We understand a list of demands has been prepared and coordinated by the Saudis, Emiratis, Egyptians, and Bahrainis, Tillerson said in a statement. The US secretary has said he is ready to assume a mediation role if regional contacts fail, but for the moment he is supporting efforts by Kuwait to bring the parties together.
