Amir delighted by Cook reception at Essex

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Pakistan bowler Mohammed Amir has praised the way former England captain Alastair Cook welcomed him to Essex ahead of his upcoming debut with the English county.Left-arm paceman Amir joined Essex after helping Pakistan win the Champions Trophy, with the 25-year-old taking three for 16 in Sundays stunning 180-run demolition of India in the final. He is expected to play in Mondays County Championship fixture against title-holders Middlesex, having seemingly earned his redemption following a spot-fixing ban in 2010 that brought a five-year ban and nearly ended his career. After his return, Amir was granted a visa to tour England last year which prompted England opener Cook to declare match-fixers should be banned for life to protect crickets integrity. But Amir, who signed a deal to join Essex back in November, said there was no hostility between himself and Cook and insisted their relationship is already very good.I met him the first day when I arrived and he was very nice, said Amir. He said to me, the funny thing, I want to learn Urdu (Amirs native tongue), so you have to teach me.No (there are no issues between us), nothing.Hes always nice and always very supportive. Everybody knows hes a good batsman and a very nice human being, so I think it will be a very good journey with him.The way the people treat me, they are very nice to me; the way they gave me a reception was very, very inspiring for me.Amir admitted his starring display at The Oval against India had given him a real jolt and hopes that success will translate into a successful summer in English domestic cricket. That was a career booster. The way I performed in the final for my country feels very, very good, I dont have words for that, said Amir. After the way we won the final, your confidence will go up, and I will use that, definitely. It will be a very good summer for me; my first time playing county cricket. Ive met good people here and hope it will be a good journey.

India drops sedition charges against villagers over Pakistan win

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indian police said Thursday that 15 Muslims arrested for celebrating a recent Pakistani cricket victory over India would not be charged with sedition, but could still face prison for cheering the rival side. The villagers from central Madhya Pradesh state were arrested Monday after letting off fireworks and cheering for Pakistan as the underdogs beat India in the final of the Champions Trophy in England.A Hindu neighbour in Burhanpur district complained to police and the men were detained for sedition -- which can carry a life sentence -- among other offences, drawing criticism from rights groups. But Burhanpur police chief Raja Ram Parihar said the sedition charges had been dropped as there was no evidence the men chanted anti-India slogans. They did shout slogans in favour of the Pakistan cricket team and lit firecrackers, but that does not warrant sedition charges, Parihar told AFP.However they still face charges of disrupting communal harmony and criminal conspiracy for the rowdy celebration in Burhanpur, which has large Muslim and Hindu populations and a history of religious violence.Rights group Amnesty international slammed the arrests and demanded the men be immediately released. At least eight other cricket fans were arrested around India on sedition charges after celebrating Pakistan 180-run thumping of their arch-rivals.Passions run high in both countries over cricket, especially when the hostile neighbours meet on the pitch.Cricket fans in both countries have been arrested in the past for supporting rival teams.Around 60 Indian students were arrested for sedition in 2014 after being accused of cheering for Pakistan after a similar upset over India.Last year a Pakistani man was arrested for waving an Indian flag after his idol Virat Kohli, Indias cricket captain, made a match-winning century. The nuclear-armed rivals have a history of animosity dating back to independence from Britain in 1947 and partition of the subcontinent. They have fought three wars.

England sweat on Broad's fitness for first South Africa Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England are set to discover later Thursday whether Stuart Broad will be available for the first Test against South Africa after the fast bowler aggravated a longstanding heel injury playing county cricket. The 30-year-old Broad only bowled one over Wednesday before leaving the field with pain in his heel as Nottinghamshire completed a dominant innings-and-280-run victory over Midlands rivals Leicestershire in the County Championship. An England spokesman has told AFP that Broad, a mainstay of Englands Test attack with 368 wickets in 102 matches, has undergone a scan and that the results are expected later Thursday.Broad has been wearing specially adapted bowling boots in a bid to minimise the impact of the injury for several years now.Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores tried to play down the impact of Broads latest injury by saying: Stuart had a bit of pain in his heel, hes had it for a while. If the situation had been different he could have pushed on through it, but there was no need to so he came off and well monitor it and look after him, added Moores, himself twice a former England coach.Nevertheless the doubt over Broads fitness is the latest concern England have regarding a key member of their pace attack ahead of this seasons opening Test, which starts at Lords on July 6.James Anderson, Broads longstanding new-ball partner and Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker, has only recently returned from a groin injury, Chris Woakes is struggling with a side strain and seam-bowling all-rounder Ben Stokes has been hampered by a knee problem.

Sri Lanka's Malinga in hot water over 'monkey' comment

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga faced an investigation Thursday after he compared a government minister to a monkey following criticism that the countrys cricketers were too fat.Sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said he ordered an inquiry after Malinga lambasted him for questioning the endurance of Sri Lankan players following their failure to reach the Champions Trophy semi-finals.He is now under investigation for making statements to the media in breach of his contract with Sri Lanka Cricket (board), Jayasekera told AFP.In my criticism of the appalling fitness levels of our players, I did not name Malinga, but he has chosen to put the hat on and attack me publicly.Malinga told a television network the minister knew nothing about cricket.I dont care about criticism from those who are simply warming chairs, he said. What does a monkey know about a parrots nesting hollow? This is like a monkey getting into a parrots nest and talking about it.Jayasekera said some Sri Lankan players had pot bellies that stopped them moving and that often they could not hold catches.Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed was twice dropped in his sides Champions Trophy win over Sri Lanka. Both catches were off the bowling of Malinga, who ended up with just one wicket for 52 runs.Jayasekera said he ordered a fitness test on the team after their return from England last week and found that most of them carry too much fat.The typical body fat amounts for a cricketer should be about 16 percent, but most of our players have over 25 percent, Jayasekera said.I want the results analysed and in future no one will be included in a national squad if they are above 16 percent.Malinga, 33, was a surprise choice for the Sri Lanka squad as he has played little international cricket in the previous 18 months because of injury.Just prior to the Champions Trophy, however, Malinga won the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) title with the Mumbai Indians.Malinga was the only player excused from Sri Lankas high altitude training camp before the Champions Trophy, because of the IPL campaign. They improve their fitness level just to bowl four overs at the IPL, Jayasekera said, referring to Malinga. These guys are not interested in playing for the country, they play for the IPL because of the money they get.Jayasekera said he was also making fitness a key requirement for other sports before an athlete can participate in overseas tournaments.

Ireland hope Test status ends England exodus

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ireland hope being awarded Test status will mean the end of top players such as Eoin Morgan defecting to England instead. Both Ireland and Afghanistan became crickets 11th and 12th Test nations on Thursday following a unanimous vote by the International Cricket Council during its annual meeting in London on Thursday.Dublin-born Morgan, a talented left-handed batsman, first played for Ireland as a teenager. But after securing Irelands qualification for the 2011 World Cup, in April 2009, he was immediately called up by England after making his mark in county cricket with Middlesex. Both Ed Joyce and Boyd Rankin, now back in the Ireland fold, made the same switch for similar reasons. It is no secret that Ireland chased this dream, number one because Test cricket it is the best, it is the pinnacle format and that which the best players say defines their legacy in the game, said Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom in a conference call with reporters following Thursdays announcement by the ICC.It was the reason stated by some of our brightest and best in recent years for why they wished to play for England.Deutrom added: So therefore, we realised that unless we were sharing the same dream as our best players, we always had the risk of losing them. While I cant sit here and say definitively no Irishman is ever going to play again for England, what I can say is at least the reason that the reason given in the past for them to leave no longer exists.Morgan, now Englands limited overs international captain, played the last of his 16 Tests in 2012.He has repeatedly insisted there is no chance of him reverting back to becoming an Ireland-qualified player.Neither Deutrom not his equally elated Afghanistan counterpart Shafiq Stanikzai felt able to say when or where their respective countries would play their inaugural Test.Deutrom said a balance had to be struck been wanting to play that Test as soon as possible and staging it somewhere appropriate for the occasion. He also said a Test against England at Lords in 2019 was feasible.Stanikzai added he would consult with the Full (Test) Members in our region.Afghanistan have recently played their home matches in the Indian city of Noida because of security reasons.Previous experience suggests it could take both Ireland and Afghanistan a long time to adjust to the demands of five-day Test cricket.Bangladesh floundered for their first decade while New Zealand took 26 years to win their first Test.If they (Ireland and Afghanistan) play each other in their first Test, hopefully it wont be that long, said ICC chief executive David Richardson. But on a more serious note, the former South Africa wicket-keeper added: Well have to take it slowly but surely and be patient.Richardson also said both Ireland and Afghanistan could expect to see their funding increase. They currently receive some $20 million over an eight-year period from the ICC and, according to Richardson, the figure could double to $40 million.

Qatar Airways seeks 10% stake in American Airlines

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Qatar Airways, its Middle Eastern business pressured by a diplomatic row with neighbors, is seeking as much as a 10 percent stake in American Airlines, the US carrier said Thursday. The surprise investment push by Qatar Airways was disclosed by American Airlines in a securities filing Thursday saying the Qatari company planned to buy at least $808 million in American shares. In addition, Qatar Airways chief executive told his counterpart at American that the carrier sought a stake of about 10 percent. The proposed investment by Qatar Airways was not solicited by American Airlines and would in no way change the Companys Board composition, governance, management or strategic direction, American said in the filing.Americans bylaws require board approval to stakes of 4.75 percent or more. Qatar Airways said it would not exceed this level without board approval and would make all necessary regulatory filings when required.Qatar Airways sees a strong investment opportunity in American Airlines, the company said in a statement.Qatar Airways believes in American Airlines fundamentals and intends to build a passive position in the company with no involvement in management, operations or governance. The move comes as Qatar faces conflict with neighboring countries after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates severed ties over Dohas alleged support for extremist groups and Iran. The countries have suspended all flights to and from Qatar.Qatars government denies all the allegations.Qatar Airways has downplayed the impact of the dispute on its business, saying on June 14 that the vast majority of its network was unaffected. But analysts have warned the profitable carrier could take a hit should the diplomatic crisis drag out.At the Paris Air Show this week, Qatar Airways was named the worlds top airline for passenger service by Skytrax, a closely-watched industry prize.Akbar al-Baker, the outspoken chief executive of Qatar Airways, used the occasion to blast Qatars rivals in the region. At these difficult times of illegal bans on flights out of my country by big bullies, this is an award not to me, not to my airline, but to my country, he said.- Open skies controversy -============================American also has had its differences with Qatar Airways, among other Middle Eastern carriers, over state subsidies the US air travel industry says violate international agreements.American chief executive Doug Parker has joined an effort with the leaders of Delta Air Lines and United Airlines to urge a crackdown by President Donald Trump on an alleged $50 billion in state subsidies to Qatar Airways and two other state-backed Middle East carriers that they argue allows those carriers to illegally compete in the US market. The Qatar stake in American does not alter American Airlines conviction on the need to enforce the Open Skies agreements with the United Arab Emirates and the nation of Qatar and ensure fair competition with Gulf carriers, including Qatar Airways, American said in the filing.American Airlines continues to believe that the President and his administration will stand up to foreign governments to end massive carrier subsidies that threaten the US aviation industry and that threaten American jobsQatar Airways already holds stakes in other foreign carriers, including a large holding in International Consolidated Airlines Group, the parent of British Airways.Shares of American Airlines jumped 1.7 percent to $49.24 in mid-morning trading.

Illegal drugs market 'thriving': UN

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - The global narcotics market is thriving, with production of cocaine and opium soaring and opioids wreaking havoc, the UN crime and drugs agency said Thursday in a gloomy annual assessment. As the report... clearly shows, there is much work to be done to confront the many harms inflicted by drugs, to health, development, peace and security, in all regions of the world, said Yury Fedotov, head of the Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which is based in Vienna. He said that while the international community is equipped to respond swiftly... there remains an enormous need for capacity-building and technical assistance, and funding continues to fall short of political commitments.About 29.5 million people worldwide, or 0.6 percent of the adult population, suffered from drug use disorders in 2015, with at least 190,000 mostly avoidable deaths annually, mainly from opioids. In 2016, global production of opium -- extracted from poppy resin and refined to make heroin -- rocketed by a third, mostly because of bumper harvests in Afghanistan, the report said, helping fund Taliban insurgents. This rise, aided by better weather, came despite a decade of international efforts to stabilise the country and billions of dollars to persuade Afghan farmers to grow other crops. But the UNODC said global opium production was 20 percent lower than at its peak in 2014, and close to the average of the past five years.Regarding cocaine, data on production, trafficking -- a record volume was seized in 2015 -- and use, including in Europe and North America, point to overall growth in the global market, the agency said.Quantities intercepted in Asia leapt 40 percent in 2015. It pointed to the haul of 500 kilogrammes (1,100 pounds) in Djibouti this year, the biggest in East Africa since 2004, probably en route to Asia.Following a long-term decline, cultivation of coca, the raw material for cocaine, shot up 30 percent over 2013-15, mainly due to Colombia, the worlds biggest producer.- Opioid epidemic -===================But opioids, which include heroin as well as prescription painkillers like fentanyl and illegal counterfeits, remain by far the most harmful drugs in health terms, the UNODC said.In the United States, overdose deaths, most of them from opioids, more than tripled to 52,404 in 2015 from 16,849 in 1999, the report said. The report also found a major geographical shift in the methamphetamine market over the last five years. The amount seized in 2015 saw East and Southeast Asia leapfrog North America into first place for the first time.Of particular note is the large increase in methamphetamine seizures in China, it said. The agency also noted that an alternative branch of the Balkan route for heroin and morphine, which accounts for 40 percent of seizures, appears to be opening up through the Caucasus. This may reflect efforts to stop the flow of migrants through the Balkans, with the amount of drugs seized falling in Greece and Turkey but rising sharply in Armenia and Azerbaijan. In addition, it said that the business models of organised crime gangs are constantly changing and that they are using new technologies such as the darknet to sell drugs. The darknet, where anonymity software and encryption hide activities and allow transactions in crypto-currencies like Bitcoin, accounts for a small percentage of drug sales but it is growing rapidly, the report said.

Milligan penalty rescues draw for Australia

Posted:

SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP) - Australia captain Mark Milligan converted a second-half penalty in Thursdays 1-1 draw with Cameroon in Saint Petersburg that left both teams heading for an early Confederations Cup exit.Cameroon midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa scored with a superb flick on the stroke of half-time, but Milligan slotted home a spot-kick on 60 minutes as both sides picked up their first point in Group B.The draw left both sides trailing Germany and Chile, who meet later in Kazan, and needing to win their final match just to have any hope of reaching the semi-finals.Cameroon play world champions Germany in Sochi on Sunday, while the Socceroos play Copa America holders Chile in Moscow.I am quite disappointed because we had the means to win the match, said Zambo Anguissa, who was named man of the match. But nothing is over, we still have a match to go against Germany. Therell be pressure but that is why we do this job.Just like against Germany, whose captain Julian Draxler netted a penalty just before half-time in Mondays 3-2 win over the Socceroos in Sochi, another lapse in concentration proved costly for Australia.I think we dominated large parts of the game, but there was a small lapse in concentration right at the end of the half that cost us, said Milligan.Well look at our game again, take the positives from it and well aim to beat Chile. Before Zambo Anguissas magical flick, there were few clear chances for both sides in an intense opening 45 minutes.Hugo Broos Cameroon relied on long balls down the flanks, a tactic that led to the opening goal, while Australias brightest moments resulted in Robbie Kruse firing straight at Cameroon goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa.Matt Ryan then held a shot from Cameroon skipper Benjamin Moukandjo following a deft back-heel from Vincent Aboubakar, but the opening goal was worth the wait.A beautifully weighted pass down the right from centre-back Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui was brilliantly scooped by Zambo Anguissa over the advancing Ryan and into the net.It was the fourth match in a row the Socceroos had conceded a goal either in the first or final minute of a half.It should have been 2-0 to Cameroon on 57 minutes when Aboubakar fired a great chance wide, leaving Broos with his head in his hands on the sidelines, just before Australia equalised. With an hour gone, Milligan tucked away a penalty after Alex Gersbach was brought down in the area by Cameroon right-back Ernest Mabouka. The video assistant referee was consulted and confirmed the decision, with Milligan making no mistake with the spot-kick.Australia coach Ange Postecoglou threw on Tim Cahill, the countrys all-time leading scorer with 48 goals, but the 37-year-old could not break the deadlock on his 99th international appearance.
