Big hike in tariff for Wapda companies

ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: The electricity tariff for distribution companies of Wapda was raised on Friday by an average 30 per cent — the highest increase in the country's history — after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) passed on to consumers the impact of imbalace in generation mix in August this year.

Nepra spokesman Syed Safir Hussain Shah told Dawn that an increase of Rs3.04 per unit in the tariff for all consumers had been allowed for the month of August 2011 after a public hearing under the monthly fuel adjustment formula...

Report urges Obama to freeze Pakistan aid

WASHINGTON, Oct 14: An influential US think-tank urged the Obama administration on Friday to freeze its aid to Pakistan until the country took actions against perpetrators of the US Embassy attack in Kabul and helped shut down the Haqqani network.

The Heritage Foundation, often used by former US president George W. Bush to announce foreign policy decisions, also asked the administration to back Congress on conditioning all US aid to Pakistan on certain counter-terrorism benchmarks. But the report warned that while this would be "a welcome tactic, it may be insufficient"...
