Protesters, police clash in New Yorks Times Square

Police on horseback clashed with anti-corporate greed protesters Saturday in New York s famous Times Square during a global day of "outrage" against corporate greed.

At least three "Occupy Wall Street" protesters were arrested after marching uptown, a witness said, while thousands of people converged on the major commercial intersection, divided by police barriers.

Police arrested 24 other protesters earlier for trespassing at a Citibank branch, a New York Police Department spokesman said. Demonstrators also walked to Chase Bank in support of the 14,000 workers sacked by the lender in the wake of cutbacks made after a government bailout totaling $94.7 billion.

Students, families with strollers and trade unionists, watched by a large police presence, marched towards Wall Street carrying placards, chanting: "We are the 99 percent," "We are the people" and "Mr Obama we need your support."

The clashes took place at the corner of 46th Street and Seventh Avenue after day-long marches that began in the Financial District. Rowdy demonstrations also took place in dozens of countries.

Mounted police pushed back protesters who were trying to enter Times Square. Dozens of panicked people then began to run and a woman fell down. She had face injuries and was swiftly carried away on a stretcher, an eye-witness said.

Citibank said its branch staff had called police after a "large amount of protesters" entered the bank near Washington Square Park.

In Washington, between 2,000-3,000 people assembled at the National Mall on the eve of the inauguration of a memorial to slain Nobel peace laureate Martin Luther King Jr.

"We have bailed out the auto industry, and we should have. We bailed out Wall Street. Now it s time to bail out working Americans. That s what this is about," the civil rights leader s son Martin Luther King III told the crowd.

Around 200 demonstrators in the US capital had earlier marched to a Bank of America branch, where they had planned to close accounts. But they were not allowed inside and the bank was hastily closed.

In Miami, a city that rarely hosts mass demonstrations, at least 1,000 people marched downtown. The crowd included youth and retirees standing up against corporations, banks and war. No police could be seen as the group approached government buildings.

Hollywood actor Sean Penn became the latest celebrity to offer his backing to Occupy Wall Street, a group of demonstrators who on September 17 took up residence in New York s Zuccotti Park and began their ongoing campaign that has since seen related protests sweep the globe.

Wikileaks founder joins London anti-corporate rally

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange joined about 800 people at a heavily policed rally in London s financial heart Saturday as part of world protests against corporate greed and budget cutbacks.

The demonstrators, some of them masked, were pushed back by police as they marched from St Paul s Cathedral to the London Stock Exchange, situated around the corner from the famous landmark.

There were only minor scuffles with two people arrested, one for assaulting a police officer, a spokesman at Scotland Yard said.

"The protest is largely peaceful," the spokesman added.

Organisers in a group calling itself OccupyLSX were hoping for thousands of participants after some 15,000 people expressed support on Facebook and Twitter.

Assange, flanked by bodyguards, got a warm reception from the demonstrators as he addressed them from the steps of the cathedral. He also spoke to media groups assembled from around the world.

"One of the reasons why we support what is happening here in Occupy London is because the banking system in London is the recipient of corrupt money," he said.

The marchers, bearing banners reading "Strike Back", "No Cuts" and "Goldman Sachs Is the Work of the Devil", were ringed by police cordons while mounted officers and vehicles also stood by.

But the protest, to the sound of guitars and drums, was overwhelmingly peaceful and the cathedral remained open to visitors.

After London s police were severely criticised for being caught out by the riots in August, they were clearly taking no chances Saturday and were out in force.

US strike kills 11 Al Qaeda militants in Yemen

The United States has raised the tempo in its war against Al Qaeda in Yemen, killing 11 of the terror group s militants in the second, high-profile airstrike in as many weeks. The dead in the late Friday night strike included the son of Anwar al-Awlaki, the prominent American-Yemeni militant killed in a Sept. 30 strike.

Yemeni officials on Saturday attributed the recent US successes against Al Qaeda to better intelligence from an army of Yemeni informers and cooperation with the Saudis, Washington s longtime Arab allies.

The successes come even as Yemen falls deeper into turmoil, with President Ali Abdullah Saleh clinging to power in the face of months of massive protests. Saturday saw the worst bloodshed in weeks in the capital, Sanaa: At least 18 people were killed when Saleh s troops fired on protesters and clashed with rivals. Witnesses estimated up to 300,000 people joined Saturday s demonstrations, the largest in the capital in several months.

"Everyone with interests in Yemen, including Al Qaeda and the Americans, is raising the stakes at this time of uncertainty" said analyst Abdul-Bari Taher. "The Americans are wasting no time to try and eliminate the Al Qaeda threat before the militants dig in deeper and cannot be easily dislodged."

Also dead in the Friday airstrike in the southeastern province of Shabwa was Egyptian-born Ibrahim al-Banna, identified by the nation s Defense Ministry as the media chief of the Yemeni branch of the Al Qaeda.

G-20 considers boosting IMF role in eurozone

Posted:

The finance chiefs of the world s leading economies opened the door Saturday for the International Monetary Fund to play a bigger role in fighting the eurozone s escalating debt troubles.

The Group of 20 rich and developing nations asked the IMF to propose ways that it could help stop countries under severe market pressure from toppling into a full-blown crisis with potential global repercussions.

The move appeared aimed at Italy and Spain, the eurozone s third and fourth largest economies, which have seen their funding costs spike amid growing worries over the currency union s stability. The rest of Europe cannot afford to bail out Spain or Italy should they run out of money.

Until now, the IMF has funded about a third of the bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, but helping the eurozone to stem contagion beyond those countries would require a broader use of resources that would go far beyond the fund s traditional role of providing rescue loans to cash-strapped governments.

But while acknowledging that the IMF has a role to play in containing the continent s debt problems, G-20 ministers made clear Saturday that Europe must first come up with its own solutions.

"Of course, even though the world has a big stake in Europe doing this effectively, Europe itself has the strongest interest," U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told reporters after the meeting. "I think they ve come to recognize that, if you underdo it, it s going to be more expensive."

Eurozone ministers sketched out a plan to their counterparts on Saturday and have promised that it will restore confidence in Europe and its banks when they unveil it next weekend.

At their Oct. 23 summit in Brussels, European leaders are expected to sign off on a scheme to maximize the impact of their €440 billion ($600 billion) bailout fund, a plan to recapitalize banks across the continent to ensure they can withstand worsening market turmoil, and a second bailout for Greece.

Part of an effort to shore up shaky countries on the continent may include a bigger role for the IMF, too.
